Opening China by Peter M. Herford, teaching Journalism at Shantou University

Washington Post,May 17, 2008 page A17: Shantou is nearly 1,200 miles from the earthquake's epicenter. Xinhua News Agency has been pouring forth reports and AP,Reuters and Agence France-Presse have reporters in the field, working around the clock as well. CCTV has special reporting to the viewers. Chinese leaders have shown compassion and quickly go to the fields to lead the rescue operations after the earthquake and Chinese in large cities and overseas have made significant amount of donations from their good hearts. The realities of the Internet and the blogosphere are accepted by authorities with open minds. The writer was aware of the National People's Congress during the meetings with great interest for the participation of delegates for democracy. A bright spot in this tragedy is the free flow of information about the disaster. My comment: Such tragic events have stimulated national unity with ethnic mettle to take care of the folks in China. Moreover, international leaders are also interested in extending helping hands for humanitarian reasons. China is under the spotlight from such negative situation but such disaster has turned out to be positive in the eyes of the world for Chinese unity before Olympics. I have reason to believe that China will always be in the headlines in the days to come and folks in all nations have sympathy and empathy toward the victims. People of goodwill shall look forward for Olympics in the name of international sports competition in Beijing 2008 during August 2008.
