WashPost,April 29,08 A shift in mood due to media distortion

A recent survey by a Beijing polling group found that more than 80% of those questioned believed Western news media were conveying a biased image of China abroad.

Behind the public mood, there is a tightening of security that officials say is likely to last until after the Games. Reason: There may be a few extreme people who would violate law and order during the Olympics. The Foreign Ministry declared it has made no changes in visa rules and seeks to facilitate travel to China.

There is a Chinese expression: "Ren bu fan wo,wo bu fan ren." In other words,if other folks do not attack me,I'll not do any harm to others at all. Such traditional lines are known to all Chinese with education with instant understanding.

Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao who saw the situation clearly on CCTV-4 during March 14, 2008 for violations of law and order such as rioting, beating, burning and killing by criminals in Tibet with the intent to disrupt the Olympics. April 30, 2008.

Nap-friendly folks can be creative. You bet!

A number of American firms either make nap rooms available to their workers or encourage them to put their heads down on their desks. Published by the Washington Post,4/29/08 page F5. Such practice is not uncommon in China as well for Sino-American Economics of Health, the wellbeing is the human capital for certainty.

Since in China and in USA,the majority folks are not getting a good night's sleep under the competitive market system, naps are increasingly important restoratives.

Experts see the benefits of taking Vitamin D to reduce cancer risk, such as colon, prostate and lung cancer. Vitamin D is to be key for bone health at all ages including in the prevention of falls in the elderly. Help Wanted: Top Managers in China WSJ 4/29/08

Wall Street Journal,April 29, 2008 page B4: The continuing gap between the education taught in China's universities and the skills businesses are looking for: The Chinese educational system put heavy emphasis on rote memorization but that does not translate well to the foreign firms. European Union Chamber of Commerce urged China to expand interships and vocational education to improve the skill sets of potential workers. Such rationale has been elaborated in "Work and Study Cycle Theory"(1978), "Keys for Economic Understanding"(1971) and "Keys to Economic Understanding"(1976) www.ask.com for reference. American firms will continue to invest, expand and stay in China, said Harley Seyedin, chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in South China.

Federal debt will affect our savings, retirement, mortgage, health care and our offspring.

Such book is wonderfully illuminating. It gives us the tools we need to reach our own judgments and make our own decisions.

Confucius said:"Ji suo wu yu, wu shi yu ren." Eight Chinese characters in saying "Never impose on others what you would not choose for yourself."

Confucianism branches out two philosophers i.e. Mencius and Xunzi.

Mencius believed in the inherent decency of humankind but also addressed the dark side as the realities of the world around us.

Xunzi seemed to mirror the original sin theory. Both thinkers stress morality and justice.

Query: 1. Would Sino-American Economics be relevant to the events today as the period of Confucianism? Such intellectual food may be digested by those who can taste the varied kinds of food with thughtful insights.

2. Would Economics be linked with law and philosophy to be incorporated in the East and the West to share human problems under the same spotlight? The answer is in the minds of the readers with options of judgments.

Hungry Plant:WashPost,4/27/B5-Market Forces

Two families couldn't be more different:

The Cuis, who live in the countryside about two hours outside Beijing, eat largely unbranded traditional foods cooked at home. The traditional Chinese way of life.

The Dongs, who live in Beijing proper, eat food from the global marketplace - shoppinig at supersized international markets, such as Ito-Yokado(Japanese) and Carrefour(French), which are quickly replacing the city's traditional mom and pop market stalls. They are influenced by the international market forces.

Folks love to have options in China and in the United States. However, the cost would be different for varied lifestyles. The son of my niece(my sister's daughter) plays golf and drives a car in Beijing with his good business of high income. His lifestyle is the same as my offspring in the USA but the lifestyle of the parents is still under the influence of the traditional Chinese culture. There is generation gap leading to the cultural gap in China and in the United States.

I do agree such analysis as I have observed the diminising financial status of the middle class in USA. My recommendations would be similar in Chinese expressions.

Terror and Consent by Prof. Bobbitt,Columbia University

Professor of Jurisprudence Philip Bobbitt published "TERROR and CONSENT." Knopf 672 pp.$35 Reviewed by Daniel Byman,Georgetown Center for Peace and Security Studies.

Bobbitt gently criticizes Samuel Huntington's "Clash of Civillizations" and Francis Fukuyama's "End of History." He contends that the world is in transition from nation states to market states whose strategic reason for being is the protection of civilians, not simply territory ior national wealth or any particular dynasty, class, religion or ideology. This shift has huge implications for counterterrorism, because future terrorists particularly if they possess nuclear or biological weapons may threaten the legitimacy of the market state.Professor Bobbit thinks BIG!
Since both USA and China are against terrorism. Such book may be an interesting reference with a mixture of caution and open-mindness.

Who'll cover the checks: The Democratic candidates tax and spending plans are costly and ambitious- and probably short on fiscal realism. My comment: I taught Macro-economics involving fiscal policy for decades and I can use the following expressions in Pin Yin system of romanization to describe such situations:

"Jie hua xian fo" meaning to borrow flowers to offer to Buddda with the insinuation that someone uses other folks' funding for the priorities as the leaders see fit. Those who have political clouts are in the position to call the shots. That is it!

"Kong zhong lou ge" meaning a castle in the sky or a pie in the sky. Looks good but maybe far-fetched at best.

The above four-word Chinese idioms can be understood by those who know the Chinese language. However, for those who do not understand the Pin Yin,never too late to learn since I have learned it. An update: Applied Economic Theory into Practice

Sequel to the Nature of Economic Science in contemporary scene:

The traditional norm or standard, once accepted as a conventional wisdom to be passed down from one generation to another, is no longer a stable body of principles that all researchers agree as models. Such classical and Keynesian economic models have been challenged by new ones drawn from popular culture of economics. Serious attention is now paid to the real world for relevance that once were not deemed worthy of study in the issues in economics. Our task, now that the established models are no longer accepted as realistic happenings. Competing economic systems create differing new model such as the special characteristics of China's economy with the concept of " One nation, two systems" that I lectured in Hong Kong in 1989-1990 as a Fulbright Senior Scholar. We have the right to question basic assumptions in the field of economics. The vitality of the new approaches comes from the fact that they closely connect people with our lives. Socio-Economics make us examine values and practices that are so much a part of our lives that they exist, most of the time, beyond our questioning and evaluation. "Work and Study Cycle Theory" is to be validated and implemented in the United States and in China with the common ground to enhance productivity. Cf.www.ask.com for reference.

East and West are One on earth in this mundane world

Singaporean diplomat Kishore Mahbubani, a canny and controversial prophet with a creative mind says that Americans and Europeans should lose their arrogance and those in China and in Asia should step up to the role of global leadership. My comment: English-speaking folks in USA and in Europe should learn Chinese and folks in China should learn English for true understanding of culture from the original source materials in the 21st century. Dean Mahbukbani is a galling scholar with gimlet-eyed view to be aware of vacuous and hypocritical Western value as some others would perceive such in the conceptual generalities.

The hardest of all sciences(physics) to the soft(economics) However,we must try to bridge and two cultural gaps with surprising humanity apropos of the Chinese language and philosophy. Chinese scholars are not degree-oriented in the past history but status is still in vogue from tradition.

My own reflection apropos of degress in higher education with humor:

Bachelor is single,not married.
Master is the one who can master a subject matter as a specialist.
Ph.D. is a learned scholar,a doctor of philosophy but not a medical physician. By definition,a Ph.D. holder is a researcher by virtue of his pursuit of knowledge re science in different catagories. The main achievement of a Ph.D. is the completion of a piece of original research with creativity as described in a doctoral dissertation. Any theory may be rejected, modified or accepted in an academic community. "Work and Study Cycle Theory" is accepted because it is confirmed by conventional empirical evidence of being relevant.

Physicists know the difference between a fundamental theory and a phenomenological toy, useful though the latter may be. Trained economists have never seen a really first-class model. It's not that physics is better, but rather that economics is nebulous! In economics, researchers who value assets based on their ephemeral opinions(sic). Every economic axiom may b demonstrably incorrect... The real question is how wrong is the theory, and how useful is it regardless of its validity. Sounds ambiguous. Well,it is meant to be!

In the meantime, I will not be lulled into letting others take care of me when I am capable of taking care of myself. Moderation is the key to concentrate and to relax during the course of the day. My mantra would be "first things first." Good communication in English and in Chinese would be the choice of the right words at the right time to the right person. Needless to say, I am fully aware of idiolect with nuance. Moreover, my spiritual life is on the top list as my priority. A routine prayer will rekindle my source of rejuvenation.

Get Fired Up for Reading apropos of enjoyment

DEVELOPMENT as FREEDOM: By Amartya Sen, Master of Trinity College,Cambridge and the winner of 1998 Nobel Prize in Economic Science. He has experience with UNDP and Harvard Institute of International Development.

Sen has focused on the well-being of those at the bottom of society not the efficiency of those at the top. The concept of human rights and political liberty are now very much a part of the prevailing rhetoric. This is so not only in the field of trade and communication, but also in terms of interactive ideas and ideals. Overcoming the problems of environment and to the sustainability of economics and social lives. Leaders in USA and in China are trying the exercise of development to counteract affliction such as poverty in particular.

The linkages of economic and political freedoms help to reinforce one another as Olympics in Beijing, rather than being hostile to one another(as they are taken to be by some) Opportunities of education and health care which require public action in Tibet have been taken care of by the empirical evidence (CCTV-4). Such coherent and cogent freedom is the perspective of the process of development in China. Development requires the removal of major sources of unfreedom: poverty, poor economic opportunity, intolerance( racial discrimination) Such violation of freedom resulted in the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to be resonated by philsopher Aristotle many decades ago: There is no hope of immortality by wealth(Cf. Indian Sanskrit around 8th century B.C.) The Chinese expression would be:"Shengbudailai, sibudaiqu" Here is the common ground(Jichu) of the higher level ethics and economics.

DESIDERATA for good living with guidelines

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible witout surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive "laotianye" to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. My formula for Happiness is material consumption + intellectual pursuit + spiritual satisfaction + good health as the Numerator and Desire as the Denominator. Moreover,we can dampen our desire to live a simple life. Concur or demur?

China and USA share the common problems

Sino-American Economics: Wall Street Journal, April 19-20, 2008 page A1:

Economics: A very short introduction by Dasgupta

Published by Oxford University Press. 2007

How economics uncovers and explains the processes that shape our lives. It reveals insights of problems and solutions.

We could conclude from the world value -savvy tenet for economic growth and other scenarios for good things in life.

We would stress our "xin xin" i.e. confidence as we trust the paper money and other financial instruments as valuable in life. Ponder such philosophically for enjoyment.

Thrifty culture maybe inaugurated for economic progress in terms of investment in human capital by means of work and study cycle theory. Education and training would increase GDP but lifestyle would be more significant for the way of life. Wisdom savvy?

Sacred values differ from material or instrumental ones by incorporating moral beliefs that drive action in ways dissociated from prospects for success. Devotion to core values such as the wellbeing of family and country or commitment to spirituality, honor and justice ought to be absolute and inviolable. Such values outweigh other values, particularly economic ones. Think hard and get the gist of it.

Pope may engage Muslims and Chinese: All are children of God

It is estimated that the number of all Christians is circa 1 billion plus and Muslims in the world would be about the same number. The largest number would be ethnic Chinese in the world with more than 1.3 billion. Ifthe word" Catholic" means universal, the leader would leave no stone unturned to contact all folks as children of God. The Pope is a teacher, a scholar and a friend to all homosapiens. However, the Vatican continues investigation of Georgetown theologian Father Peter Phan's writings, which the US bishops have condemned...and Georgetowns full-time coordinator of homosexual resources develops programming that celebrates homo culture and several Georgetown professor's publicly oppose the Church on mattters ranging from marriage to assisted suicide. My recommendation is for the leaders to study Confucianism to find the common ground of Christianity and Confucianism to be the universal church in harmony of "One World,One Dream" for Olympics and the final mission of the missionaries as the bottom line. Any other scenarios for free thoughts? Thanks for your feedback if readers are interested in the headlines lately on China and the Pope in the news.

Sequel to Pope and China: NYT,4/17/08 p.A24

Pope praises Americans' faith and warns of perils of secularism: Bishop Lori of Bridgeport,Conn., said:"We appreciate very much the encouragement he is giving us to reach out to victims, efforts to maintain and expand safe encironment programs, and to do so in a context of preaching and exemplifing moral integrity(can be found in Confucianism) and supporting the family.

Family is "Jia" as the basic meeting ground of the West and the East, Chinese culture stresses family as known to all and Pope emphasizes family as well. I would detect the same reasoning for any harmonious society.

"Qi jia zhi guo ping tian xia" in Pin Yin system of romanization i.e. In searching for peace in the world, we must start from our own family, then the nation and the world.

However,"Guo jia" is a nation with two Chinese characters in the sequence as a combined expression, but not to say "Jia guo" In other words,an individual must be loyal to his/her nation first as in this context.

Secularism denies the Creator or "Lao tian ye" Here we detect the common ground again since "Lao tian ye" is a popular expression to address the Divine regardless of individual's religious affiliation. If I remember right,Rud. Kipling stated that the twin of the East and the West shall never meet but I do see the meeting ground as I stated above.

To be updated about China and the Pope

Pundits inform us that the Chinese people want government to maintain law and order in Tibet and other parts of China. Riots, beating, robbing and killing are violence against innocent folks. Such acts are to be condemned in all nations for security.

VOX POP: Any so-called boycott is not in harmony with the spirit of Olympics for global sports competition. Chinese people view Olympics as an investment to show to the world such as the Super- gigantic bird nest stadium and other sports facilities. National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley explained as published in the Washington Post. President Bush will attend Olympics for US-China sports relations.

The Pope shall celebrate Mass today in national park, Washington. Radio broadcast says that American Christians and non-Christians shall attend for such international events to pray for peace and goodwill towards all folks in all nations. Congressional Record,July 18, 1974:Community colleges in USA

C Span Radio Broadcast, April 16, 2008: I heard from Presidential candidate McCain stressed the role of community college to train the unemployed for new jobs re the American economy. Senator Obama and Senator Clinton mentioned the same topic as issues for US economy for workers in USA. President Bush cited the role of community colleges in the State of the Union in 2004. I was so gratified that our leaders are aware of training and retraining in the same reasoning as my article entitled "The Future of Community Colleges" published in the Congressional Record,July 18, 1974 with my own vision. Such work is quoted by Richard T. Gill of Harvard in his textbooks in 1975,1978 and 1980. Moreover,my books entitled "Keys for Economic Understanding"(1971)"Keys to Economic Understanding"(1976) elaborated the development of human capital from the grassroots in America for economic development. Tidbit re Economics,English and Chinese et al.

The biggest financial concern is the price of fuel. Crude oil hits the record of $114a barrel and gas prices are up for American drivers. About 43% of folks have nothing left for saving after meeting the exopenses of food and fuel. According to national Parade survey, teachers deserve pay raise but I am a retired teacher without raise but social security benefits for living. About 93% agree that the economy should be the Presidential candidates' top concern. It is a known fact for sure!

The Unconventional Wisdom of Economics by Steven Lansburg

Paperback is published by Free Press,New York. April 2008

This is classical Landsburg: original, arresting 'obviously wrong' and actually entirely correct!

The author is provocative and playful in his mission to demonstrate how an understanding of economics will change the way we live our daily life. Cf."Keys for Economic Understanding" www.ask.com for information. "Yi ren wei ben" in Pin Yin implies dedication to human beings. Such meaning in Chinese language shares the same rational for understanding economics under the true spotlight everyday.

Economics is not the study of money, it is the study of value. Everything is determined by our value but lifestyle of the Chinese people is different from the folks in USA. The science of everything is what economics is. That covers all the field in every nook and corner for homosapiens. Here is the common ground of Sino-American Economics in the real world. Students pick up the debt habit early: Majoing in credit cards

Please delete if you are not interested. Thanks for your time in deleting or reading with fun.

With easy access to credit cards, students start to enjoy now and pay later with high interest to pay to the bank. I found out such system is popular for educated young generation in China nowadays. Here is the link of credit-based culture re Sino-AmericanEconomics.

Consumerism requires money as the factor of happiness i.e. Happiness is material consumption over desire but I would add intellectual pursuit, spiritual satisfaction and good health to the numerator and the denominator of desire may be dampened for spirituality with intellectual underpinnings.

Inflation is back in USA and in China also. Chinese currency dips below 7 to US Dollar. Consumer education with a thriftier approach to living should be promoted during the recession. Perhaps it is a blessing in disguise! In England, folks saved money by putting coins into a meter to pay for home heating instead of being surprised by an unexpectedly large bill later. Where our money goes? Military spending

According to the Office of Management and Budget, military spending for 2008 will be $583 billion and Food & Nutrition assistance is $60.2 billion. Compare the digital numbers for priorities of funding.

Washington Post,April 14, 2008 page A1: The rising prices of milk, grain and produce are hitting schools hard. Food costs unravel nutrition initiatives.

Cash-strapped schools raise prices or pinch pennies by serving more economical dishes. School officials say it is becoming harder to fill students' plates with health, low-fat foods. My comment: It is a matter of priority for the leaders to allocate funds according to the catagories as they see fit. This is election year and we need to elect leaders to pay attention to our domestic needs or the involvement of Iraq for our security. To me, an educator since 1945,school children are the future human capital and future leaders. Leaders today should pay attention to the health of children today. Limited resources shall be allocated according to the judgment of our leaders in the days to come. However,we can exercise our judgment in the election of our new President in November 2008 to change the direction of the course of action to be reflected in economics.

in China, leaders are paying attention to the Olympics this year as we are aware of their priorities for funding such international sports competition. Politics should not exist in the competition of athletes in the name of global sports. I have reason to believe that folks in the world are excited about such great sports events to be held in China starting in August 2008.

"Deep Economy" by Bill McKibben Holt Paperback 2008

New Research from many quarters has started to show that even when economic growth does make us wealthier, the greater wealthier no longer makes us happier. Happiness is not material consumption over desire only(money is needed) but we must add intellectual pursuit, spiritual satisfaction and good health as the numerator. The denominator of desire may be dampened when America is suffering from recession in 2008. Such may be extended to the world re globalization. What is the economy for? I would advocate social economics because economics can not exist in a vacuum. As such,it must be applied to a society.

Problems such as global warming, high prices for food and fuel et al.plus the growing inequality diminishing the existing lifestyle of the middle class folks is very much in evidence. Such problems are shared in China as well.

The motive of self-interest for material goods must be dovetailed with public interest otherwise social stability would be disrupted.

In short, ethics and moral philosophy must be taken into consideration for the leaders in USA and in China in the 21st century.

Our trade strategy: WashPost,April 10, 2008 p.A23

General Electric goes abroad to lower costs and boost profits. Goldman Sachs invests overseas in the same kind of low-wage, high-profit enterprises. That is the mission of such businesses. But the US government has never taken on the mission of defending the American economy, or the American people in the global economy. Wrote Harold Meyerson, the columnist at Washpost.com

My comment: Multi-national corporations go overseas for higher profits due to low wages for the workers. Total profit is total revenue minus total cost. CEOs have their economic clout that the government has no authority to interfere under our private-sector-oriented free enterprise system. The trite expression:"What is good for GM is good for America" as a fallacy of composition is no longer applicable in the macro-sense. Former CEO of Goldman Sachs and the present Treasury Secretary Paulson with his distinguished expertise is the authority to optimize and maxmize the American economy for both private and public sectors. The evidence is clear enough.

Page D1: A new poll finds Americans feeling a lot more squeezed thereby making no progress over the past five years. Presidential candidates are aware of such situations. Another headline: Bleaker hopes for a good retirement due to lower income, rising costs of health care, food and fuel plus declining home values.

IMF forecasts rough economic weather for all nations especially middle class folks who are struggling harder to maintain existing lifestyles.

What would be the possible way to survive? Is Economics relevant and vibrant? Sequel from Classical to Contemporary

During decades of my teaching career, I have been informed that the majority of students dislike economics because the subject matter may be dry and dull when it is taught from the textbook and the workbook only. They seem to be bogged down with numbers with no relevance to the society. I am in favor of socio-economics to be applied to our society with data but data may be questioned with discrepancy or lag.

The highest enrolled course on the list is English composition. Would the English language have to do with Economics from the demands of business leaders? Liberal arts courses are designed to train students with broad and intellectually rich coverage of daily events that are related to economics. I have found out that most students lack their writing ability due to the existing format of multiple choices for exams. Employers need emplyees who are trained in good communication. Such thoughts and concepts are needed for economics students in USA and in China in the 21st century with global contacts via technology.

Social and moral questions surrounding the policies of the government through the prisms of virtue and ethics would come to the minds of students with intellect of critical thinking in social sciences. As educators,we are striving to have a literate population with a good balance of academic tradition and skills of creativity.

It is high time to require students to be exposed not just to quantitative data but to qualitative reasoning about happenings in the real world plus the need of learning critical foreign languages such as Chinese as a strategic one in terms of globalization of trade to validate the law of comparative advantage.

Free Market for Profit with Ethics and Morality?

Adam Smith is known for his famous work "The Wealth of Nations",which describes wealth creation in a competitive commercial economy dominated by market's invisible hand, has long been appropriated by conservatives but anathema to the liberals. Read the statements by Presidential candidates and learn economic realities in USA. It should be pointed out that Smith had another work entitled "Theory of Moral Sentiments" and Smith was a professor of moral philosophy.

What do we value in our life? Money, Morals, Immortality? Our lives are filled with everyday queries of fact and finance. Which investment brings the highest return? What will the candidate actually do when elected in November 2008? The basic issue is morality. Would values transcend cultural difference between the East and the West? Can we have ethical values without religion?

Such examination of philosophy would challenge us in our encounters of our way of life. Here we would be able to find the common ground of Sino-AmericanEconomics.

Inflation is the common problems in the USA and in China for consumers to pay higher prices for food and fuel. What would be the rate of economic growth in USA in 2008 and 2009 to be compared with the rate of growth in China. The World Bank has published estimates for this year and next year for competitive comparisons of Sino-AmericanEconomics in the positive and negative scenarios from purchasing power parity. The answer depends upon the view of the readers.

Wall Street Journal,4/9/08: p.A11: Olympic official condemns Anti-China protests

Demonizing and denigrating China is unfair, untrue and unjust to badmouthing the most populous nation on earth. Alarmingly, the vast majority of Americans do not know the truth re riots and violence in Tibet from the media with bias.

I heard the broadcast this morning that our leader thinks D. Lhama is a kind person with religious background. My comment:"Zhi ren zhi mian bu zhi xin" as a Chinese maxim in Pin Yin system of romanization. For those who know the Chinese language, such expression is loud and clear without reservation. However, those who do not know the language yet, please start learning the Chinese language as a form of art re calligraphy and music:four tones in Mandarin Chinese.

I wish that educators would dedicate every available resource to redress this calamitous situation since Chinese is a strategic language needed by Americans. Moreover, language would articulate ideas in a coherent manner. How can we expect to have positive US-China relations when the basic tool for communication is neglected? We must start learning original source materials for better understanding. In this regard,"A Glimpse of the Chinese Language" in English is hereby dedicated as a reference for communication with 1/5 of the folks in the world. www.rand.org for information.

Let the Olympic Games Go On,Washpost,4/9/08 p.A19

Joan Chen,a US citizen in 1989 wrote an honest and objective article that I would share with her views as a US citizen since 1954. Even though we were naturalized in different decades but we are interested in proper US-China relations for the mutual benefit and for the best interests of USA and the world as a whole.

Since the Cultural revolution ended in the late 1970s, she has witnessed unimaginable progress in China. A government that had no ties to the West has evolved into a more open government eager to join the international community. Since I was an American expert lecturing and teaching Western economics in China since 1981, I have observed China's economy has gradually turned into a market economy, raising standard of living of folks in China. The government has made rapid progress during the past years to be a participant of the international community. The evidence is clear, indeed! We can look at the record.

Henry Kissinger's article dated April 7, 2008 described US-China relations as the former Secretary of State for the best interest of USA. Joan Chen's article is a reinforcement from her observation as an ordinary American citizen. I am sending this blog as an octogenarian Citizen of USA and as a graduate student focusing in Economics since 1947 in the United States.

In her conclusion of the article: For decades, anti-China human rights groups have spent millions of dollars denouncing China. To many folks, it seems that this lobby is the only voice that is acceptable or newsworthy in the media and to America. But times are changing. We need to make friends than enemies. Remember what a little ping-pong game did for US-China relations in the 1970s? Let's celebrate the Olympics for what the Games are meant to be - a bridge for friendship, not a playground for politics. I endorse such wholeheartedly!

My view is that Olympic Games are designed for international competition for sports in the name of humanity. Should we condemn the violation of law and order by some Tibetans to try to disrupt such a good cause for their own politics? "Human rights" is an expression with buzzwords and discrimination may be a violation of human rights to make a living. Civil Rights Act of 1964 was meant and is meant to improve human rights of Americans to make a living as Presidential candidates have also spoken out for a better America without discrimination as guaranted by our Constitution.

I wish to add that we must strive to have peace and economic development in the days to come in the nuclear age as I have sent my blogs as an independent and objective watcher for positive relations of two great nations on both sides of the Pacific. Ponder about the consequences of any conflict in the name of economics for US-China or Sino-American relations as Kissinger has aptly pointed out for readers of the Washington Post,April 7, 2008.

American economy is in a recession and we need to understand globalization in the name of Economics for the best interests of all folks in America. Thanks for reading my views and I hope you would see fit to read the entire article by Joan Chen from Washpost online.

Have a great day, every day to be informed about the truth as I earnestly seek for your insightful understanding of the significance of US-China/Sino-American relations in the 21st century.

Misinformation or lost in translation causes misunderstanding

Language problems would generate misunderstanding in semantics of two different languages. That is the very issue as I have detected re US-China relations for decades. It is known that about more than 1/5 people in the world speak Chinese with Chinese culture and China is now the fastest growinig economy. Americans are aware of the need to learn Chinese for better understanding for whatever contacts with the folks in China or whatever activities for communication. However,Chinese is a complicated language even natives have difficulties with it. Since China has officially pushed the language reforms to simplify the language and the introduction of Pin Yin system of romanization for globalization via alphabets for learners,"A Glimpse of the Chinese Language" in English(cf. www.rand.org) is useful with the significant purpose of globalization for cultural understanding in the nuclear age for true peace and economic development. Chinese is one of the six official languages in the United Nations. Thank you for reading my views and have a great day!

New Zealand and China has free trade agreement

CCTV-4 reports on April 9, 2008: Free trade agreement between New Zealand,a developed nation in East Asia and China,a developing nation in East Asia, has been signed to promote economic and other corroborating activities for mutual benefit. Such opportunity deserves close attention re US-China economic relations as a follow-up of Henry Kissinger's insights re the drift of the center of gravity of international affairs from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean as published by the Washington Post, April 7, 2008. USA is also a Pacific nation as I pointed out in my previous blog and New Zealand is already moving ahead to have economic competition with China for exports of milk products and other trading activities. It is also noted that Chinese exports would enter New Zealand re the new favorable conditions under competition for the market economy. Since competitive marketing is essential or even critical for the United States economy especially under the present slowdown. I would envision the authorities to take similar action to benefit the American economy. Needless to say, consumers in USA and in China would be affected for positive course of action under the law of comparative advantage in the 21st century. Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao. Sequel to Henry A. Kissinger's view re global cooperation

Former Secretary of State mentioned geopolitical and competitive elements between US and China,EXPRESS paper published Chinese influence on April 7, 2008 on page 8 to reinforce such rationale. China is becoming the No. 1 foreign economic clout in Laos. As migrants, money and influence roll across the frontier, northern areas of the country are beginning to look like a Chinese province. According to Deputy Prime Minister Somsavat Lengsavad, a Chinese firm was granted a renewable, 50-year lease to transform 4,000 acres of rice fields into a modern city, thus stimulating the business and investment climate of one of the world's poorest nations. Samsavat explained that when Laos fell short of funds to build a stadium for the Southeast Asian Games it will host next year,it turned to the China Development Bank. The bank offered a Chinese firm, Suzhou Industrial Park Overseas Investment Co, a loan to build the stadium in exchange for the lease.

Since Olympics will take place in Beijing,China in 2008 and Southeast Asian Games will be held in Laos in 2009,sports-minded folks would visit Laos from all over the world for sports' competition in Southeast Asia. Such competition would attract peoples from all nations regardless of politics as the Olympics. This view is shared by ordinary folks globally. Kissinger's reasoning of making effort at global cooperation especially between United States and China would be sound for sports competition or other collaboration without politics.

Henry Kissinger's article on National Security

Washington Post, April 7, 2008 page A17: Three simultaneous revolutions occurring around the globe:
a. the transformation of the traditional state system of Europe;
b. the radical Islamist challenge to historic notions of sovereignty;
c. the drift of the center of gravity of international affairs from the Atlantic to the Pacific and Indian Oceans.

My comment: USA is a Pacific nation as America's day starts from Guam.

In the past, such shifts in the structure of power generally led to war, as happened with the emergence of Germany in the late 19th century. Today the rise of China is assigned such a role in much alarmist commentary. True, the Sino-American relationship will inevitably contain classical geopolitical and competition elements. These must not be neglected. But there are countervailing elements. Economic and financial globalization, environmental and energy imperative, and the destructive power of modern weapons all impose a major effort at global cooperation, especially between the United States and China. An adversarial relationship would leave both countries in the position of Europe after the two world wars, when other societies achieved the preeminence the nations of Europe sought through self-destructive conflict with each other. My comment: We must ponder the serious consequences with profound thought in this regard.

What should be the role of Russia, which is affirming a notion of sovereignty comparable to America's and a strategic concept of the balance of power similar to Asia's? My comment: NATO is a case of point. What objectives must be sought in concert, and what are the extreme circumstances that would justify unilateral action? The quest for a single, all-inclusive remedy is chimerical. My comment: We must have a macroview about US-China relations especially Sino-American economics.

I agree with Henry Kissinger's insightful analysis in toto. I happened to be a member of the research staff,Department of Economics at the RAND Corporation from January 1964 to September 1965 when Henry Kissinger was a consultant during that period. My colleague Richard Moorsteen published "Remaking China Policy" Harvard University Press, 1971. During that time, I published "A Glimpse of the Chinese Language" in March 1965.(On page 8,I hinted the opening of China) All of us had the vision in the 20th century to see the opening of China to the world for the best interest of USA and other nations re economic globalization in the 21st century that we are witnessing for the sake of humanity on earth.

Investors had nowhere to hide:WashPost,4/6/08

Page F7: Slower consumer spending and reduced access to credit- Citigroup and Bank of America, financial giants have reported billions of dollars in write-downs. Wall Street will further dent investor confidence and lead to another broad sell-off. Let us wait and see the coming events.

The recession bell has rung for the US economy," said Stuart Hoffman, chief economist at PNC Financial Services Group.. "The loss of jobs is very widespread." I envisioned such outlook months ago.

World stock funds lost 9.6%; emerging market funds fared worse, falling 11.7%. China region funds dropped a whopping 21.2%.

Funds have tanked so far and we hope the stimulus package might give consumers a shot in the arm since consumption sector occupies 2/3 of GDP.

My comment: Taiwan posted healthy gains and Taiwan's new leader will promote more trading and other economic activities with mainland China. That remains to be seen in the positive scenario. Such happening would have impacts on Sino-American economics as a whole since Taiwan is a part of China officially as proclaimed by US presidents.

No Cushion Against Hubris: WashPost 4/6/08

Page B7: "The first panacea for a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; the second is war." Earnest Hemingway,Esquire Magazine,Sept. 1935

This is changing under our feet. The golden moments that enveloped the global economy for most of this decade is fading - at least psychologically if not materially - as we reach the end of an era of habris in global affairs.

It is coming not just for Americans but for the population of other developed economies. It is coming not just in US military setbacks in the sands of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan but in a spreading lack of trust in the counting houses of Wall Street and the chanceries of the world's finance ministries.

All three Presidential candidates: Obama,Clinton and McCain seek a mandate to restore a commanding American leadership in global affairs that was taken for granted until recently.

Any lingering assumptions about the ability of a single superpower to manage for the good of mankind are evaporating abroad as the Federal Reserve rushes through emergency measures and slashes interest rates to guard against a collapse of US and European financial markets. The value of the US dollar affects oil and other commodity prices. My comment: We are witnessing the impacts of such dark scenes.

It is hard to see how the financial systems can be fixed or even rebalanced without committed and credible American leadership based on REALISM and not HUBRIS. Jim Hoagland's conclusion is to put US own house in order. My comment: Charity starts at home. It is a matter of priority of paying attention to demestic needs versus international involvement. Such change of direction remains to be seen after November election of a new leader to be in charge after January 20, 2009.

Strategic Studies Quarterly,Spring 2008

Forging New Horizons: The strategic environment we face today presents incredibly complex challenges: Competition from rising peers such as China and Russia - that have a full range of technological and economic capabilities. Today we are fully engaged in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Middle East in general, and we are fighting to survive. Decades ago, the United States controlled almost half of the world's GNP,it also faced a bellicose Soviet Union. However, the security and economic health of the United States are now closely intertwined with the stability and prosperity of the international system of globalization in the 21st century. There is a growing Chinese economic influence in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and the Pacific in trading activities. My comment: The United States and China are members of the Security Council of the United Nations to work for peace and economic development to have global impacts with repercussions of all nations.

We must also have expertise in culture and economics to predict how China and Russia will evolve. It is only by thorough and careful long-range pragmatic analyses that we can prepare to address these multifaceted evolutions from a strategic perspective. Lawrence A. Skantze,General,USAF(ret) Former Vice Chief of Staff.

Common Problems of USA and China

Business Week,April 7, 2008: Page 78: China's Factory Blue. I have noted similar situation in USA due to outsourcing and the slowdown of the US economy.

Page 81 The Middle Class feels the squeeze due to rising food and fuel prices. Such price rise is the serious problems for Americans as well. WTOP radio says that the rise of such high prices is the top news of last 17 years as I heard this morning.

High prices are forcing American and Chinese consumers to scrimp due to the constraint of income.

Economic systems may be different but the goal of any system is designed to serve living conditions of the peoples. Nobody would impugn such objectives. Any other scenarios?

Cimparison of economic system: USA and China

Washington Post,April 5, 2008 published "Letter to the Editor" by Arnold F. Fege, director of public engagement and advocacy for the public education network wrote: "Socialism for the Rich": The queries raised are as follows:

What is wrong with a Congress and White House that at the drop of the hat, give away $30 billion in loan guarantgees to shore up Bear Stearns chief executive Alan Schwarts but find it impossile to provide $30 billion over five years to fund the Statge Children's Health Insurance Program? Well, my comment is that who has more political clout in our society? Children OR the multibillionaires in the private sector? It is a matter of public interest versus private interest for the leaders to make a decision. Such priority problem has been noted by Presidential candidates already. Needless to say,we shall watch the election result in November this year.
Aren't families without health insurance just as much at risk as Wall Street is? Aren't our children worth as much as a Bear Searns executive who made #141 million over the past five years despite recklessness and and inept leadership?

The writer stated further: Oh, I forgot. Providing government health insurance may be labeled as socialism but providing government bailouts to banks and brokerage houses is not? Excuse me for getting my "isms" confused and my patriotism misplaced, but this is one citizen who cannot be duped anymore by a Congress and a White House that plead poverty when it comes to funding poor kids and families but public interest in justifying $30 billion to Bear Stearns. If socialism is good for business, why is it not good for the uninsured? My comment: The writer is an honest good guy to submit his views to the Washington Post but where is the real clout? His views are published for readers but may be ignored by the leaders with real clout.

I have beeb a student of economics since early 1940s and am trying very hard to learn the difference of economic systems. Perhaps smart readers would enlighten me with your smart answers to the above queries. Thanks for reading my innocent blog as an octogenarian who has been watching our society with complexity and complicity since 1947. Let us try our very best to compare American economic system and China's system as learners of Sino-American or US-China economic systems ad infinitum. April 5, 2008

The Public Security Bureau has accused Uighur separatist group of planning terrorist attacks to disrupt the Olympics. Authorities said a woman plotted to blow up an airliner using materials in a soft-drink can but was thwarted by quick-witted crew members. Since then, the Chinese government has tightened restrictions on liquids carried by airline passengers.

The United States has designated some Uighur separatist movements as terrorist organization and declared that one of the the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, has links to Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda network.

The reader of this blog is entitled to make judgment about such news to be related or otherwise to Sino-American Economics. I have reason to believe that both USA and China are fighting Terrorism for mutual benefit in the pursuit of peace and economic development in the 21st century.n

Martin Luther King Jr.: A complex legacy et al.

Washington Post,April 4, 2008 on Page A1 with Photo of MLK,Jr. apropos of race, justice and citizenship. "New York Times/CBS" survey reveals that 81% of Americans believe that we are on the wrong track as published by "USA Today" as well. Presidential candidate Obama stresses changes of directions and most American voters would support since the economy is on the wrong track with the clear empirical evidence of such trend deserving a CHANGE to the right course for 2008 election.

It is high time to realize that USA is a nation of varied races and Americans should be treated fairly regardless of race, color, national origin and age. However,if an octogenarian applies for a job, most likely no positive reply will be given to the applicant. Why? There is still age discrimination even though the octogenarian is hale and hearty! Francis Shieh is aware of such case very well as a witness of such unfair treatment in the literal sense. Hahahaha for a cheeful weekend and remember that smile costs you nothing, not even a penny! The good practical joke is as follows with rhymed comics by talented Tom Toles published on page A22 of the Washington Post today.

This is the investor, tattered and torn; Who lent to the banker, shaven and shorn; With advice from the economist, theories(in the books?)worn; And help from the builder with the crumpled horn, who sold to Jack(whom?) now forlorn.

As a lifelong student,I truly appreciate the above in-depth analysis of the real world of economics in action nowadays.

"It is the Economy" with whatever in semantics

It is (semi) official: We are in a recession. FED Chairman is the bad-news bearer belatedly as published by The Washington Post on page A3,April 3, 2008:

Greenspan: "The most wrenching since the end of the Second World War."

Feldstein: "Substantially more severe downturn than usual" "The situation is bad, it is getting worse."

Six weeks ago, Chairman Bernanke said "sluggish growth." Cf. My blogs in the past.

My comment: Since there have been twin deficits i.e. trade and federal deficits, the logical effect would not be favorable. We are witnessing the consequences now. Stagflation has been noted and we hope for the best in 2009 as FED Chair stated. In the meantime, grin and bear with the situations re faith and hope with charity toward the less fortunate folks in USA. China's economy has problems as well but I do envision the joint efforts of two nations with strategic economic conference in June in Washington for possible favorable outcome hopefully in terms of globalization of resources for proper utilization to obtain economic utility of peoples."Yi ren wei ben" is the guidelines for USA and China. The readers can detect the semantics in denotation and connotation in your own musing with serious thoughts.

US-China share balanced economic growth

Washington Post,April 3, 2008 page D5: Treasury Secretary Paulson said "Our two countries share the challenge of achieving balanced economic growth along with energy security and environmental subtainability." "It will take resourcefulness, creativity, determination and a long-term commitment to achieve the results we seek." He cited the natural equilibriium of markets to match supply and demand." My comment: There are expansionary and contractionary gaps to the aggregate demand and aggregate supply as per the economic model. However,we must try to bridge the gaps by adjusting the fiscal and monetary policies in China and in the United States as well. Such adjustments would be difficult as we are witnessing the current happenings in USA and in China in the real world. Economics is full of complexity and complicity too! Human factor is very much involved for vested interests, indeed.

World Bank report about Asia.WashPost,April 2,08 page D7

East Asian nations must act promptly to ease the burden of mounting food and fuel prices on the region's poor. The Bank said growth in developing East Asian economies could slip by 1 to 2 percentage points this year to 8.5% as the US credit crisis unfolds, damping demand for exports. FED Chairman testified in Congress today re the negative scenario for the first half of this year.

The report also trimmed its 2008 growth forecast for China to 9.4 % but said it should be robust enough to help drive the global economy as the United States and other industrialized countries slow. Such assessment reinforces the significance of Sino-Americn Economics in the 21st century.

The Origin of Wealth by Eric D. Beinhocker

Harvard Business School Press,Boston,MA published the book with a subtitle: The Radical Remaking of Economics and What It Means for Business and Society. $16

Such work is a brilliant thought, -provoking, and wide-ranging magnum opus, indeed.

The author surveys the cutting-edge ideas of economists and scientists and brings their work alive. It is economic evolkution an algorithm of all-purpose formula for innovation of a form of information processing. Evolution creas wealth and has takenus from the Stone Age to the $36.5+ trillion global economy of today.

How complexity or even duplicity economics from the movers with strategy and design to investment and public policy. The book sets the agenda for economic thinking in the 21st century and beyond. Adam Smith noted the rich variety of ways that folks have measured their wealth throughout history in nations in realms ranging from computer software to the mind to human culture and the global economy.

Is wealth an intrinsic, tangible thing that gives value? Wealth is not a fixed concept and may be more ephemeral (sic) The value of things depends upon what one is willing to pay for it at a particular time.

In the contemporary world, wealth exists in electronic blips on a computer with the swipe of a credit card or the click of a mouse.

How the knowledge of our brains lead to the creation of wealth? How can the global economy grow in a way that is environmentally subtainable?
