I light the fuse and disregard the fuss in mundane things

My way is a freeway to success as a thinker. I open my eyes to the beautiful sights and open my heart to good folks on earth. I am truly grateful to my student/friend who shows empathy with understanding and fairness. I can find exquisite joy in tackling what would be tedious fields of languages plus freaky economics. My effort may go unnoticed but I would keep doing my best. Every time I act in a way I know is right, I gain confidence as a lifelong student with exciting learning endeavor. Francis Shieh a.k.a. Act and React: Agree to Disagree with prayers

The following Pin Yin are written with my heartfelt sentiments as the record for my blog with spirituality ad infinitum.

Yin mou gui ji. (Strategic silence)
Duo duo bi ren.(Pressure a person)
Jian ku pu su (Spartan living)
Long teng hu yue. (Whirlwind Dragon and Jumping Tiger)

I dedicate the above to those who understand and those who wish to learn the Pin Yin system of romanization for understanding the Chinese culture!

Zhuangzi's philosophy and Xiefucius, lifelong student of Economics

Transcendentalism from Zhuangzi: A philosophy holding that ultimate reality is unknowable or asserting the primacy of the spiritual over the material and empirical.

Economics from Xiefucius: The ultimate test of economic success is the contribution which economic activity has made to the goal of human happiness. That is my purpose of life as a longlong student of Economics since 1943 in Shanghai's St. John's University. Xie Shihao a.k.a. Francis Shieh. August 30, 2007 at Andrews AFB Library.

Family members are assets to manage my assets

Leave wiggle room. I'll be changing my mind frequently. My kindness can be turned around to become greatest strength when I have the proper attitude. It is obvious that I am seeing the talents of my offspring. I am looking at the problem that can be solved by love as the remedy. Fuel my desire so I have the gumption. The essential ingredient in my relationship is a high level of communication. For me to perpetuate and protect what I have, I must know what the other folks are thinking. I should know that driving myself unusually hard and others might not be able to go at the same intensity. Slow but sure and things will work out nicely in due course of time with understanding and love of the same family. Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao. Thursday, August 30, 2007 at 4.55 a.m.

Washington Post,Aug.29,07 page A17

"The Federal Reserve allegedly held short-term interest rates too low for too long. From late 2001 to late 2004, the overnight Federal funds rate ws 2% or less. Credit was supposedly too easy.
The Chinese funneled huge export export surpluses mostly in dollars into US Treasury bonds. That kept long term interst rates low even after the Fed began raising short-term rates in 2004. China's foreign exdhange reserve, now exceed $1,3 trillion.
Mistakes and misdeeds do not occur in a vacuum. The ultimate culprit may be irrational exuberance." My comment: Life style of Americans must be noted! To get rich in a jiffy? US-China/Sino-US economic relations must be understood and not to be misunderstood. Francis Shieh on Wednesday, August 29, 2007.

I can spot someone's attitude as an octogenarian

Economics is a study to be connected with everything especially lifestyle of human as I see it. Such leverage turns and turns apropos of willpower, discipline and drive. I shall continue to grow up, a courageous way to live. It requires me to be honest, face realities with moxie as a lifelong student of human behavior. I may be motivated by vigorous and positive ideas in my mind. I shall bring sunshine into others to be reflected by my own positive bright scenes wih cheer. If I lose a penny,it may be considered as a donation to others who would need such penny. Such thought sounds weird but life is a judgment of our own thoughts. I started teaching in 1945 and teaching is learning twice. Learning is fun with dedication. Spirituality is essential for my way of life. Material possessions are ephemeral and transitory but ideas will last forever to posterity. We are bound to leave this mundane world when we become centenarians or more years? Who knows? Thank you for reading the words from Xiefucius. Xie Shihao, the evergreen teacher a.k.a. Francis Shieh. August 29, 2007

3. Ju yi fan san.(from one to detect the rest from the square i.e. encore with reiteration.)
4. Ye luo gui gen.(home is where the heart is!)

Bound to China: Book World,Washpost,8/26/07

Fast forward to 2007. China has become an inescapable presence in American life. A drop in Shanghai stock prices triggers a sell-off on the New York Stock Exchnge. NASA moves one of its satellites to avoid debris from a weapons test. Californians wipe soot off their cars. It is now practically impossible for an ordinary American family to go 12 months without buying something from China. Words for thought, indeed! Francis Shieh a.k.a. Trying to befriend all folks spiritually as a fellow human

I am vigilant about improving my attitude because I realize that people would have their initial thinking. However, an extra show of affection and understanding will earn me the respect I deserve spiritually. It is good to know that folks around me care enough to have things going my way due to my past culture and advanced age. Live and love have always been my principle with commitment. My integrity and fortitude would not go unnoticed. With diplomacy, I'll prevail to quest the extension of my life spans. Furthermore, My petition will turn the graceful acceptance into a beautiful challenge to make an art out of living with languages and economics. Francis Shieh a.k.a. Language Lesson: Japanese etymology from Chinese

I visited Tokyo as the guest of Dr.Hanshil Koh, professor of Law at Tokyo University. In Tokyo, it is not necessary to learn much in the way of Kanji i.e. Hanzi in Pin Yin of the Chinese. Most street signs and maps carry Romaji versions of place names and directions. Romaji is a Japanesse writing system in which words are written in the Roman alphabet. In China,Pin Yin system of romanization is the official Chinese writing system. It is most useful for English-speaking people to learn the Chinese language from the phonetic sounds expressing the Chinese language before learning the Chinese characters which would be unwieldy at best?. It is possible for a person to get around quite easily if he/she takes the trouble to learn how to read and pronounce Romaji in Japan and Pin Yin in China. Just learn some basic social language and carry "A Glimpse of the Chinese Language" in English that explains Pin Yin system of romanization. Chinese language is a form of art apropos of the beauty of calligraphy and a form of music in terms of the four tones as mentioned in such paper for a glimpse of the Chinese language. 5. Xue er bu yan i.e. Never tired in learning.
6. Xue yi zhi yong i.e. Learning for practical applications.

Meeing the best student in the Chinese language with expertise of varied dialects:

2. Ti tie ru wei i.e. Micro- refinement re intellectual exchanges via three way conversions of Shanghai,Mandarin and English.
3. Li shang wang lai i.e. Mutual satisfaction apropos of interesting dialogues.

Enjoying the golden era with humor to break ice

Good ideas are praised and promoted. Kudos to all. When we realize the transient nature of our existence on earth, we would feel happier. Devote ourselves to a new endeavor, ease up on our expectations. No one can resist quick wit and easy charm as lifelong learners with humility. "Work and Study Cycle Theory" (www.ask.com for reference) can be validated and implemented for our meaningful living. Life cycle may be expressed in Pin Yin system of romanization as follows: -

Sheng - Arrived wherever on earth.
Lao - Getting older as time goes by.
Bing - Falling into sickness.
Si - departing for eternity.

With faith,we must extend the above customary lines in Chinese language with Pin Yin to
Yong chui bu xiu for our immortal soul to be ever present after our departure from this mundane world.

Spiritual Clout for genuine joy as the mindset

The blogs are uplifting and meaningful for true living with spiritual faith and love for all homosapiens. Our faith should not be dogmatic but a faith of forgiveness, tolerance, strength, humility, perseverance and love. As a Confucian Christian who has been a citizen of the United States since 1954, I would state catagorically that to believe in our Saviour is acceptable in our heart and in our mind but to say Christianity is the only way to Heaven would not be fair to other good folks on earth. People all over the world would have free will to have personal belief with faith in spirit. Xie Shihao a.k.a. Francis Shieh on Saturday,August 25, 2007

Keep the faith through daily prayers for the spiritual soul

I shall occupy my mind to focus on learning languages and economics on daily basis with faith in mindset. While our body needs air, water and food, our soul needs a vision. Something compelling to look forward to is our soul's life blood. It is high time to reconceptualize my original plan with remarkable strength and real clout. It is a test of our fortitude in our daily living. Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao on Saturday,August 25, 2007 at 6.22 a.m.

Two striking happenings to be remembered always

On February 24, 2007 Agnes left this mundane world as a great loss of Shieh family with profound sorrow for all folks. Today is the six-month anniversary of such an occasion to be remembered with prayers for the repose of her soul.

On August 24, 1947, Francis Shieh left Shanghai on SS General Gordon to come to the United States for advanced studies at USF. Today is the 60th anniversary. Chinese expression goes for saying of turning every sixty years as a cycle of remembrance for such an event.

The following acronyms would serve as my dedication of the above: -
F - as Francis and F as Fortitude in English i.e. resolute and steadfast and Pin Yin for "Jian ren"/"gang yi" in the pursuit of knowledge ad infinitum.
S - as Shieh for Spirit in English or"Jing shen" in Pin Yin for Chinese romanization to remember Agnes ad infinitum.

Your kind comments would be greatly appreciated. August 24, 2007 at 6.56 p.m.

My convictions are represened in my life in obviious ways

Staying anchored with equanimity and tenacity would be a purposeful challenge. The way to crystallize such objective is learning languages and economics. I'll gain trust in others and be happy that I have chosen to see things through when I focus on motivation for any upcoming encounter. I may be a judge of character as an octogenarian when my heart takes the lead with varied cultures ultimately. When folks get creative wheels turning, my imagination can be an ally to make connections. The playful student in my life is a lucky person to be around. Search soul to discover what is genuine for me to work in the same direction. The basis of solid morale is the oil in the engine that keeps friction from damaging the parts. Ten Points/Pointers in life to be our Guidelines

1. We are unable to change our surroundings but we can change ourselves.
2. We are unable to change the facts, but we can change our attitude.
3. We are unable to change the past, but we can change the present.
4. We are unable to control others but we can control ourselves.
5. We are unable to foresee the future, but we can make good use of today.
6. We may not have ideal enounter in life, but we move on with unflappable determination and strong willpower.
7. We are unable to extend our span of life, but we can be hale and hearty.
8. We are unable to control the weather, but we can adjust our moods.
9. We are unable to choose our looks, but we can always wear a smile.
10. We are able to be happy with the suggested equation: Happiness is not material consumption over desire only but we must add spiritual satisfaction, intellectual pursuit and good health to the numerator in fraction and the denominator may be desire. However, desire may be dampened if we wish to lead a simple life on earth. Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao on Monday,August 20, 2007

The truth is the truth as a truthful account

To my dear readers, I try to ask for an honest answer. Relax to search for a more interesting scene. Let life play out in its own blessed time. Life is looking a little scraggly around the edges. My impulse is to turn off the mental chaos. Perhaps I breathe slowly to stretch exercises with trust of my instincts. I am idealistic to believe that I can still achieve the ambition of my life, and realistic enough to recognize that I still need education and training in the days to come. I shall concentrate on what is natural.(Pin Yin:shun qi zi ran) I make plans and involve a walk under the open sky to think about motherland and folks in Shanghai. I am starting ripple of goodwill with good fortune from the Providences. Heartfelt connections keep relationships growing forever. Xie Shihao a.k.a. Francis Shieh. August 19, 2007 at 4 p.m.

Keep an open mind with confidence in learning:-

With smattering of the Chinese language and economics, we liberate our minds and open our eyes to happenings in the world with positive scenarios. Synchronous events are messages in the flow of life. Nothing hampers our momentum in our pursuit of knowledge as life-long learners. Think ahead and get the jump on opportunities. We spend time with those we admire and we may educate ourselves via osmosis. A person is known by the company he/she keeps and we keep company with scholars who can see the world from the proper sight. Our approach may be childlike with humor. We can be attracted to friendly, cooperative and harmonious ways with all those that are kind-hearted with decency. Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao on August 19, 2007

Who is a Dynamo? You be the judge!

Smart work versus hard work would be academic but we may chime in just for a beautiful interruption for fun. By teaching and learning our own expertise, we may be building our net worth and enhance other folks' interest for the same focus. The best way would be to fight for our principles in life and to appreciate the philosophy of life. We must study aesthetics for superb taste to discover beautiful things in this world. Consequently, we vigilantly observe a plan to enjoy our professional development for ultimate success in our chosen field of endeavor.

"Made in China" does not devalue King's statue

Washington Post,August 18, 2007 on page A22: Amanda Schumaker wrote: "I can't believe that Atlanta residents Gilbert and Lea Winfrey Young were so outraged at the outsourcing of the commissioned artwork. The most important things for a memorial is to do just that, memorialize what the person who is being honored stood for. The Rev. Martin Luther King,Jr., the person in this case, stood not only for equality and harmony between blacks and whites but among all people in USA. I feel that artist Lei Yixin is an excellent choice as sculptor, not only because of his talent but also because he suffered oppression during the 1960s in China, as many blacks were suffering here in America before and during the civil rights movement. I am eager to visit the new memorial in 2009. I am sure that sculpture of the Rev. King will do him justice, regardless of where it was made or by whom." My comment: Such rationale is to understand globalization of human beings on earth with equal opportunities to make contributions. It would be interesting to note another case that two American citizens of Chinese ancestry with tenure had to leave the same college after 17 and 18 years of teaching in Maryland for unfair treatment of scholars of color. Let us wake up and realize that people of all colors are children of God. Francis Shieh on Saturday, August 18, 2007

I have a steely resolve to make my change. Once my mind is stretched to include all I have learned,it would embody my dreams with optimism to be alive. Send out happy vibes as unique and powerful action. Here is a story about 4 folks in the same family named Everybody, somebody, anybody and nobody. There was an important task to be done and everybody was sure that somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it but nobody did it. Somebody was upset becuae it was everybody's job. Everybody thought anybody could do it but nobody realized that everybody would not do it. It ended up that everybody blamed somebody when nobody did what anybody could have done. Clear and simple goals in this world of High-Tech.

I use my moral compass along with the imbibed economic philosophy of life. Better to lose material things and save my spiritual soul. Adam Smith was a professor of moral philosophy before he published his "Wealth of Nations." Needless to say,China is included as a large nation apropos of the largest population. But Chinese people need to be trained and educated for the Olympics in Beijing 2008 and World Expo in Shanghai in 2010. The influence of the Chinese language that I exert over students will be felt for years beyond at www.Dictyon.net. I have been hungry to learn the Chinese language since 1926 and thereabouts. Such knowledge is like a sweet potato chip that compels me to keep reaching into the bag for another delicious bit... until the Law of Diminishing Utility kicks in! As a blogger,I hope that folks can be impressed and enchanted. I act on generous impulses to believe that the mundane world would never be a cooling and hardening place but a warm and soft venue for all living beings on earth.

Economics is meant to seek optimal way of life on earth

Ten Guidelines to have positive mindset:
1. Having true friends to share our noble thoughts.
2. Correcting errors when mistakes are made without thinking.
3. Facing realities in life with courage and proper scenarios.
4. Do remember to relax and to balance work and leisure on daily basis.
5. Disregarding petty things and leaving minor happenings with joyful reasoning.
6. Be rational and be kind to fellow human beings in this mundane world.
7. Before any plan or taking any action, ponder the consequences thoroughly.
8. Smiling and cracking jokes with humor as "huixie" in Chinese from Moxie in English nickname re Modeling after Xie.
9. Recalling the happy memories in Nanjing with intellectual pursuit in economics.
10. Be outspoken and open-minded to find friends with the same personal traits.

China's trade surplus rose 67% in July from the same month a year earlier, to $24.4 billion, its second highest monthly level on record. Why? Clearly, consumers prefer Chinese products in 2007 to be compared with the official figures last year. Francis Shieh. August 11,2007.

Ideolect and Nuance should be noted by scholars

Washington Post,August 9, 2007 on page D5: Some senators are worried about the large trade deficit between the US and China. China's trade surplus jumped almost 60% in July, widening to $23.1 billiion from $14.6 billion a year earlier, according to a Bloomsberg News poll of 18 economists released on August 8, 2008. However, Glenn Hubbard, former chief of President Bush's Council of Economic Advisers said that there have been enormous benefits to the US economy from trade wtih China. Moreover, mainsteam opinion among economists would be: China's export boom has been a good thing for the world economy. My comment: Open competition and free trade would honor the Law of Comparative Advantage as known by all students of economics. Francis Shieh,a lifelong student of economics. We were growing up with the culture to be debt-free. Consequently, we have provided well for our children and grandchildren. 4. Vinegar would relieve coughs.

Countdown to Beijing: Washington Post,8/8/07

Georgetown University Professor published an article: "Not only did a ping-pong ball play a key role in Sino-American rapprochement, but the two Koreas have promoted reconciliation. In the coming year,we will see Beijing to mark the Games for China's constructive role in the community of nations. My comment: TIME, August 13, 2007:"The mainstream among economists: China's export boom has been a good thing for the world economy." China is holding 1.3 trillion of US$ apropos of Foreign Exchange Reserve as published by Economist magazine. Francis Shieh on August 8, 2007

I find my strength in teaching for intellectual clout

I shall utilize my positive vision to create my humor i.e." huixie "from xie as moxie. I may discover insights into provocative learning experience. Teaching maybe a game but I feel upbeat and enthusiastic apropos of my endeavor. As a teacher, I act as a performer. Whatever I do,I make it look fun to facilitate retention as my way of transmit knowledge. Such methodology may appear to have discord (buxiehe) but would be more fascinating as a real JOY. Blog it with commitment to be creative, original and surprising. As I continue to explore new directions, a new style emerges with favorable comments. Soak it in but I am not wet in the light vein. A judge once said" Economists get into deep water but come out dry" Well,I try to be an economist with my frugal underpinning.(sic) Francis Shieh a.k.a. My classes are loaded with delightful surprises

To Whom It May Concern, I consider myself as a person of character - like being faithful to my teaching and honoring my family and students as friends. However, I am more than a character in the Chinese language. Xie Shihao is my name with three Chinese characters but may be considered as one term(word) in English for my full name i.e. Last name and my personal name. The conversations are revealing apropos of ideolect and nuance. I'll learn all I need to know as a lifelong student by conviction. I feel somewhat balanced and happy when I send my blogs. I keep close to my students who are kind and eloquent. My fields of economics and the Chinese language would be competitive but I would always be interested in all feedbacks. It takes more than natural talent to win at this game. However, my heart and my mind are open and that may be wonderful in the search of knowledge. All human beings need contacts on daily basis. We do need such interaction as much as we need air and water. Being friendly and receptive , my gesture would have far-reaching effects. Thank you for your time in reading my humble views. Globalization and Economic Growth

Washington Post, August 6, 2007 page A17: Before the crises of the 1990s, economists believed that financial globalization was a good thing. After the crises, the consensus turned; economists reported little to no correlation between openness to global capital and economic growth - not least because their data now included open countries that had experienced growth destroying crises. But, depending on how the next few weeks turn out, the consensus may swing back again. My comment: The expression should be: Delta, delta, delta ad infinitum apropos of the nature of economics. Moreover,we are aware of the fact that US-China/Sino-American Economics would be a part and parcel of financial globalization. Needless to say, US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson,Jr. plays a significant part for such epoch-making role. That remains to be seen in the days to come. Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao. I am attracted to versatility and creativity of David,student/friend

I am trying on a new attitude to gain momentum toward a goal of teaching Shanghai dialect. We follow our bliss leading to learning with joy and humor. I teach others to laugh and laughter begets good health and longevity. Things look splendidly from that commanding perspective. Interaction in the Chinese language opens communication openness. We encounter new expressions in Wu dialect and with choosy and observant ideolect and nuance. It is like my happy arrival in San Francisco in August 1947 with the intent to study multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary fields in the United States. I create myself on a more conscious level to discover that I am a lifelong learner for intellectual and spiritual pursuit. Xie Shihao a.k.a. Francis Shieh. Monday, August 6, 2007 at 5.33 a.m.

Casual remarks apropos of the Market System

Paul Paul Samuelson of MIT declared in 1989 that the Soviet economy can function and even thrive. China's economy has been booming after reforms as the market economy. Some economists construct abstract models with the constraint of time lag. The reality check would involve market forces rather than mathematical models per se. Such system means voluntary exchange between the buyer and the seller to their mutual benefit. Turmoil in the Middle East led to supply interruptions and the fear of more interruptions in the future. Consequently, such factors push up the price of oil, a reflection of economic reality. A central tenet of economies is that people make decisions on the margin. The marginal utility of a good or service is the amount of utility (satisfaction) we get when consuming one unit of it. If we are really thirsty, the marginal utility of the first glass of water is much higher than that of succeeding/successive cups because our thirst diminishes after the first glass. It is to be known that a person's income is no measure of his/her intrinsic worth, moral or otherwise. Economists, philosophers or thinkers could conjure up calculated risk but the human mind is to be the ultimate resource. The myth of Economics may be in the minds of students of economics ad infinitum. Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao on Sunday, August 5, 2007

Americans from A to Z in the light vein

After spending 60 years from coast to coast in the United States, I have not succeeded in learning all there is to know about Americans. Nevertheless, I would like to point out the following ABC... as my casual observations of some characteristics in a nutshell.
Americans are regarded as Westerners but First Americans were Asians.
Busy folks with colorful faces and multi-cultural values-white,black,brown,yellow et al.
Competition is the buzzword in business and social status.
Dollars are an uncommonly common target for everyone as the goal in life.
Enter and exit human relationships readily and quickly.
Friendly as go-getters, but Hi is followed by Bye as a pattern.
"Go for it" is a motto in the spirit of entrepreneurship.
Hypertension goes with high income and high cost of living.
Impatience is the outcome of fast action in a hurry.
Jokes have become American sense of humor as disciples of Mark Twain.
Kiss and Ride, a sign at metro subway, railway stations or airports with or without a smack!
Love is the closing for writing for sweet folks apropos of varied kinds of affection.
"Me first" attitude. Self-interest since Adam Smith but public interest involves volunteers.
Nosiness is taboo. Mind own business for privacy. "Don't ask and don't answer" is the guideline.
Oops! is an exclamation or glorified interjection of a slip of the tongue or any action.
Patriotism involves the citation of the Constitution with ideolect and nuance as one sees fit.
Quest for fame and fortune in terms of economics in application.
Risk is the foundation of microeconomics.
Security and sports are the headlines nowadays.
Teasing is an indication of being liked. To be teased is to be liked.
Unemployment begets mortgage foreclosures for homeowners.
Vulnerability to temptation since Adam and Eve as a human trait.
Woo fame or success in business or as a suitor to start a family of two.
X is a letter in Pin Yin system of romanization of the Chinese language i.e. Xie for thank.
Y Yield is to allow other traffic to have the right of way.
Z Zest for fun and pleasure.
The above are my gut feelings, subject to your own interpretations, modifications with imagination. Thanks for taking the time to read my humble reflections i.e. "Zhuo jian" in Pin Yin. Have a great day, everyday. Xie Shihao, thanks from a hero of poetry in spoof with humor or "huixie" in Pin Yin. Francis Shieh. Named after Francis Scott Key to change "Land of the Free and Home of the Brave "to "Land of Free Enterprise and Home of Brave Bureaucracy" for the private sector and the public sector of the American economy. Stellar option to teach and learning twice since 1991

I was born in 1926 and reached the golden age of 65 in 1991. However, I encounter the blast of fresh air when I conduct my classes in China and in the United States from 1992 to date. I do not show up in my classes to have fun but I show up to be fun. Every day is important to get perspective of ideolect and nuance of Economics and the Chinese language. In Pin Yin,such situations would be "shuofabutong, youchayile!"I reach out to my students as my friends and do feel invigorated when I meet younger folks as I am hale and hearty. Such successful actions may be open-ended in creating a turnaround from one area to the other with micro view plus macro overview. Economic circumstances would affect what we do, but they never affect how we feel. I may feel glorious with or without money when we have the true happiness as I sent my blog in the past. I am striving to find the range of human experience - a noble cause that will eventually be realized in due course of time. The students have so much fun poring over them and they hardly know they are learning all the time. My case rests here. Xie Shihao a.k.a. Francis Shieh. August 4, 2007 at 4.50 p.m.

Dedication to all folks with Life,Love and Joy

Life in this world is to make contributions as a scholar. "Zhu shu li shuo" in Pin Yin system of romanization. To appreciate beauty of nature everywhere on earth as our delightful milieu.
Love all homosapiens to inspire and to enrich folks to learn Economics and the Chinese language apropos of the understanding of ideolect and nuance in every respect. To find the best in others. Be humble and modest as a lifelong student.

Joy to the world to stress spirituality and dilute possessions. Happiness is not material consumption over desire only but to add intellectual pursuits, spiritual satisfaction and good health as the numerator over the denominator of desire in a fraction with the proper mindset. To laugh much to be young at heart for longevity. Hehehahahoho all the way and we shall live to be centenarians.

A vision to improve US-China relations in the days to come

ALOHA to the readers. Believe it or otherwise,we can turn a negative into a positive by breathing. Breathe in understanding and out any misunderstanding. It is filled with the elegant aesthetic standards of the times that can generate love for friends everywhere from the delicacies of the Chinese language. With the proper attitude, cheerful and joyful scenario can be the mindset. When we have a beautiful mind,we see the lovely scenes of the good earth of China to be reflected with charm and good effect on USA. Such would be the Sino-US economics. US Treasury Secretary Paulson seeking common ground with China

Washington Post, August 2, 2007 page D8:" The environment is an area that is easier to cooperate on. It is something the Chinese have common ground with members of Congress on. " Paulson said. In addition to Paulson, Food and Drug Administration representative discussed safety and FDIC will advise the People's Bank of China on insuring deposits." China has 23 million folks living in poverty, Who could we threaten? We don't have the ability. China does not and will never threaten anyone." Vice Premier Wu Yi said. On page A21 Two academic economists published an article on "China's Chance to Lead" "China's argument for making no substantial reductions is one of FAIRNESS. The developed countries that are members of Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development have contributed most of the excess greenhouse gases to the atmosphere and should bear most of the burden of reducing emissions." My comment: US-China positive relations would be beneficial to the peoples of two great nations and globalization is known to all economists apropos of agriculture, resource and environment et al. Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao. August 2, 2007 at 4.20 p.m.

Intellectual activity is inspiring ,fantastic and powerful

It is the humankind that makes thinking Americans want to study the Chinese language. I do have an open mind and love in my heart in order to be successful. I trust my teaching method is innovative and would focus on daily happenings in China for US-China cultural and economic understanding. New ideas will be fully explored with the belief of the most populous nation apropos of humanity. Needless to say, I shall remain attentive and take extra time for scholarly reflection in philosophical context for the best interests of two great nations on both sides of the Pacific in the 21st century. Washington Post, August 1, 2007 Page A17

"The huge costs of aging baby boomers for Federal Budget: From 2005 to 2030, the 65 and over population will nearly double, to 71 million; its share of the population will rise to 20% from 12%. Social security, Medicare and Medicaid already exceed 40% of the $2.7 trillion. By 2030, their share could hit 75% of the present budget, projects the Congressional Budget Office. Such vision would illuminate the connections between defense spending, retirement benefits, health care, economic growth and so on." My comment: Where are the priorities? The next President must decide for the best interests of Americans as taxpayers. Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao on August 1, 2007 at 4.22 p.mS

My spirit is enlivened by new Wu class

Starting July 30, 2007, I have been learning the new ways to refresh my Shanghai (Wu)dialect to remove the obstacles of lack of opportunity to speak during the past decades. The more I delight in my teaching effort, the more I challenge my intellect. Consequently, I am so thrilled to have discovered my native dialect in the gray matter. Such attractive milieu in the classroom is hereby established in such unwittingly conducive way. I shall stay strong with my Shanghai accent - not like the moth beating against the light bulb with my sense of humor(huixie) as simile ?or metaphor? in the light vein. My student/friend may be motivated by imagining under the happiest circumstance hopefully. Xie Shihao a.k.a. Francis Shieh, the Shanghai Guy since 1926 on Wednesday, August 1, 2007 at 4.40 a.m.
