Business folks want status with material things such as house and car. However, ordinary Chinese cannot afford to buy cars with their limited income. I repeat my thoughts for readers to ponder and reflect my philosophy of life in the mundane world.

On the same page A7:To encourage the Chinese to go green, GM,which has ranked first for passenger car sales in China in each of the past three years, is preparing to market hybrid vehicles or cars that run on alternative fuels. Food for long life if you believe such tips for YOU.

Green tea, peanuts, almonds, walnuts, cereals with whole grain, Salmon and sardines, spinach, blueberries, apples. The most important recommendation is good Chinese food in a good restaurant or homecooking.

Qigong exercises for workout re fitness and wellness: Improving posture, circulation, agility and blood pressure.

In short,we must maintain superbly optimistic attitude with upbeat and cheer.

The proper mantra would be: I am here for YOU when we relax with friends and family.

Take things easy and wearing a smile with laughter to balance the mood of our physical body.

Folks would admire us for what we are, not what we have our material things.

On page B1,B8: Chinese Americans find cultural connection in games. Through the Olympics, parents can say to the kids,'See,where i'm from is not that old fashioned or out of date. We can do great things like hosting the Olympics. The Olympics is your thing, but we're hosting them.' It is a way to bring the first and second generation together. The heritage would be the same apropos of international sports competition. There are Chinese characters to arouse the interest of the readers on page B8. Pew Research Center on China and Confucianism

The Way They See It Q: Are you satisfied with the way things are going in China? 86% satisfied. More than 8 in 10 Chinese think China is heading in the right direction...Making them more content than any other population surveyed.
But many Chinese are not fully satisfied with their income, job or family life- 54%,60% and 67% respectively. Most Chinese believe that their economy is giving other countries a lift: Positive 55%. Almost 80% think that China is popular around the world... Based on survey released in December 2007. The above data are published by the Washington Post July 27, 2008. I have reason to believe that positive scenario may be noted during the Olympic Games as the world watches China's achievement in sports. On page B5 Jonathan Spence believes that Confucianism is now leading the nation to national pride as expounded by the Chinese philosophers, educators and scholars. The influence of Confucius and Mencius can be felt in Korea,Japan,Vietnam and ethnic Chinese in every nook and corner on earth. I fully endorse such views as a lifelong disciple of Confucianism since the days in China from late 1930s and 1940s in my schooling from the original Chinese classics with a university degree in Shanghai (1946). The FED has extended financing to non-banks

For the first timie since the Great Depression, the Federal Reserve has extended financing to non-banks - specifically, primary dealers such as securities broker-dealers - as part of its ongoing attempt to inject liquidity into the struggling credit markets. The Primary Dealer Credit Facility(PDCF) established in March, allows the Federal Reserve Bank of New York to provide overnight cash reserves to primay dealers in exchange for a broad range of collateral. The new credit facilty aims to help primary dealers in providing financing to participants in capital markets and to promote an overall orderly functioning of the markets. The PDCF will remain in effect for 6 months and may be extended if the Fed deems it necessary.

"I have developed into a person of greater faith."

Chris Carter's character development is integral to "The X-files: I want to believe.
A combo, and a number of years ago I would have called myself a natural skeptic. Now I have to say I have developed into a person of greater faith through the years.... That it is all not for naught. That there is meaning." He expressed such to be published at the Washington Post, July 27, 2008 on page M2.

My comment: We are beholden to the Creator and we must have faith to believe! Even though we maybe charismatic and quick-witted but humility should be our attractive quality. We must endure things in life and put our sharp intellectual clout to the task of straightening out any unhealthy situation in life.

Eggs also are a great source of protein as known to all.

Fish: Eating fish may cut your risk of heart attack, stroke and sudden cardiovascular death. Fish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which may reduce the risk of diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, and inflammation. Small yellow fish from China are good too. Coffee: Among its remarkable benefits, new research shows, coffee may reduce the risk of diabetes, heart attack, gallstones,Parkingson's disease, kidney stones, and cirrhosis. One caveat is that black coffee may lead to thinner bones, especially in women, but the simple solution is to add milk to your coffee.

Chocolate: Dark chocolate, which contains at least 70% cocoa, has proven health benefits. It contains less sugar than white or milk chocolate and is a rich source of health promoting compounds such as polyphenols and flavonoid antioxidants (similar to those found in green tea). A small intake of dark chocolate may reduce the risk of the blood clots that cause heart attack or stroke and may lower blood pressure. Chocolate also can lift your mood and give you a boost of energy. Moderation - no more than 2 and half ounces a day, please.

Sequel to "NUDGE" by the Director,Center for decision,Grad School of Business,Columbia U.

We often choose poorly. The reason is that, being human, we all are susceptible to various biases that can lead us to blunder. Our mistakes make us poorer and less healthy; we often make bad decisions involving education, personal finance, health care and credit cards. American society is simply too diverse, individuals are simply too creative, circumstances change too rapidly, and government is simply too fallible. Many sensible Republicans know that even with free market, government intervention cannot be avoided. To countless ordinary people, the debates seem increasingly tired, abstracrt and unhelpful- pointless sloganeering. Many sensible Democrats are fully aware that mandates can be ineffective and even counter poroductive. The sheer complexity of modern life, and the astounding pace of technological and global change undermine arguments for rigid mandates or for dogmatic laissez-faire. Emerging developments should strengthen the principled commitment to the people in the USA and "yirenweiben" in China apropos of the mix of public and private sectors clearly evident with ongoing events in the 21st century.

Nudge is a policy-oriented book, thanks to the imprimatur of Sen. Barack Obama. The authors want to steer people to make better choices. My comment: Economics is a science of change and choice. Students in economics learn how to maxmize and optimize in all situtions!

Richard Thaler is a pioneer of behavioral economics and Cass Sunstein, the coauthor,a noted law professor. Numerous studies show how far short humans fall from the ideal of homo economicus. Inertia, herd behavior, ignorance of odds, and egotism conspire to cause people to make bad decisions and poor predictions.

In spite of economic downturn, the burgeoning coffee or tea reflects the trend of the need of drinks in USA and in China. It seems to be related with the daily routine of our lives. In economics as on the Shakespearean stage, the only thing more dangerous than assuming the best is for everyone to assume the worst. My comment: Assumptions are assumptions from the mindset. That varies with individuals, indeed! Capital One,the Credit Card giant cites rise in defaults: Profit plunges 40% for the McLean financial giant.

Robert Louis Stevenson said: "Keep your fears to yourself, but share your courage with others." I also remember the expression: The world is full of a number of things that we should always be as happy as kings. But the Kingdom is NOT in the mundane world. It is a big world and our awareness of it explodes into new territory with fascinating new avenues to come. Some say cold air weakens your immune system but others say it is the constant contrast: hot, cold, hot, cold. Such cyclical realities may be applicable to life with sweet and sour days for varieties and changes of taste. Hehehahahoho all the way and we shall live to be centenarians. Amen!

Old people are happier,my foot:WashPost 7/18/08

Page A16: Dorothy Rich wrote:"Regarding the story - older Americans may be happier than younger ones. I am glad that researchers think that old folks are happier than younger people. After all, old people have their beloved passivity, have come to terms with life aned have few, if any, great expectations. Hogwash! I wold trade any day of my golden years for the excitement and disappointments of life in the teen and young adult years. Pretty soon, researchers may tell us that comatose people are actually happier. NOTE: My equation for Happiness: Material consumption over desire is not adequate but add intellectual pursuits, spiritual satisfaction and good health.Cf. my previous blogs for reference if interested.

My comment: It is a state of the mind. I would recommend the three words of faith, hope and love. Plus UCO as mantra: Upbeat, cheer and optimism. We must enjoy life to strive to be centenarians with mortality in this mundane world plus firm conviction that our souls are immortal. Per omnia secular seculum. Amen. Dominus vobiscum. Page A9: Pope Benedict XVI warned the world of natural resources being used up by humanity's insatiable consumption and the call for the protection of the environment. I have always advocated simple way of living as a lifelong student to live and to learn as my priority. Consumption is needed for a middle-class lifestyle of living. A learning lifestyle would never be wasteful.

Closer US-China relations in the 21st century

Rick Powell and Casey Eichfeld will represent the US Olympic whitwater slalom team in Beijing. The longtime friends have the perfect relationship for the double canoe.

Wall Street Journal, page A8,July 17, 2008: China is still doing extraordinarily well by the standards of other countries. Its economy has expanded at a rate of 10% every year since 2003. Even with the current global weakness several forecasters think 2008 could end up being another good year. Even 8% growth would not be a problem for China, so the government can work more forcefully to bring down inflation.

Shanghai: WSJ,July 17,08 page C2: Citigroup Debit cards for China: The banking giant, one of the biggest foreign lenders in China, said it has won Chinese regulatory approval to offer debit cards to its local customers.

Plastic is increasingly important for China's banking industry and for its economy, as consumers power an increasingly large share of economic growth.
US Treasury Secretary Paulson had used bilateral talks to press Chinese officials to allow foreign banks to isue cards and Chinese regulators accepted applications from Citigroup to offer yuan-denominated debit cards. I have envisioned such deals apropos of Sino-American economics for mutual benefit.

We,the People and "Yirenweiben" in USA and in China

Economics has been thought with private interest covered with the assumption of self-centered approach. It is my intent to break out such narrow view and would propose a new framwork that is compatible with realities for true value in the name of humanity in USA and in China with the mantra: We,the People...and "Yirenweiben."

The vital concepts of fairness, commitment, human dignity, free will and decent motivation are to be incorporated in contemporary economics with more nobler and humane perspective.

The relationship between the role of the public and private sectors demand new insights for socio-economics of employment and international trade. "Keys for Economic Understanding" is hereby dedicated for training and retraining in light of current state of the economy in USA and in China. Cf.www.ask.com for reference.

Why Americans are not happy? By a professor in New York City: Published in Chinese language in "Shijieribao"

The issue is Money and Love: People focus on money as the only goal in life causing problems. Money cannot buy happiness even though it is recognized that money is needed to lead a decent life. True love should be the top priority in the minds and hearts of the folks with good sense. My equation for happiness is not material consumption as numerator over desire as denominator only but to add intellectual pursuits, spiritual satisfaction and good health to the numerator as I lectured in Shanghai in 1981. I am delighted to learn that the professor in NY has the similar reasoning for proper philosophy of life.

Welcome to stylish Shanghai!

Washington Post,July 13, 2008 page A10: Shanghai is hosting Olympic soccer games in August 2008 and the World Expo in 2010.

The traits that Shanghai folks vaunt - busines acumen,savoir-fair and the embrace of things foreign - are not those in which Beijingers h are traditionally taken pride.

Shanghai is a metropolis, with more foreign flavor than Beijing. "Shanghai Fashion" is known to all. As a native of Shanghai since 1926, I am proud of Shanghai.

"Kung Fu Panda" hits China: Made in Hollywood,USA

Such movie follows a slacker panda named Po, who works in his father's noodle shop and eventually fulfills his dream of being a kung fu fighter, and features the voices of Hollywood stars Jack Black and Angelina Jolie. It is taken in $350 million at theaters world-wide.

I wish to point out the Pin Yin system of romanization should be "Gongfu" instead of "Kungfu" but the established Wade-Gile system lingers in the minds of lots of folks world-wide.

Washington Post,July 12, 2008 page A3: Senator Obama defends comments on learning other languages: Americans need to learn more foreign languages. I am sure when learners study phonetic equivalents,Pin Yin system would be studied and more folks would be familiar with Pin Yin system of romanization in the 21st century.

Xie Shihao, published "A Glimpse of the Chinese Language" (1965)dedicated to all who wish to learn the comparisons of varied systems of romanization and the simplified Chinese language plus the traditional form of the Chinese characters. A physicist and an economist apropos of philosophy

Einstein said that a person either lives as if nothing is a miracle, or lives as if everything is a miracle.

Xie cited: Faith,Hope and Love plus UCO in re Upbeat,Cheer and Optimism.

Einstein has the well-known equation: E=MC square in physics.

Xie quoted Economics: Equilibrium is not equal to Material Consumption over Desire.(Cf.previous blogs for more details) Learning may be 9/10th learning to think and feel fully. Only 1/10 learning to write. As homosapiens,we go through life and embrace with passion as per our interest for fun in our mindsets.

The Option is yours!

It is on me to bring order to the confusion when and if there is such encounter but EQUANIMITY is the Mantra!

It costs nothing to wear a smile with laughter to beget longevity with spirituality. All of us are being tested and we can pass the tests as long as we believe with faith. We need to keep priorities in check.

Army soldiers are Olympic hot shots

Washpost,July 9, 2008 page E1: Countdown to Beijing:
Fort Benning,Ga. - US Army sharpshooter ,19-year old skeet competitor, headed to his first Olympics in August, knows that he must sustain that perfectin to clinch a gold medal.

WashPost,July 8,08 page F6:

"Tai chi(T'aichi Ch'uan" may help elderly have fewer restless nights" "Chi" in Pin Yin system would mean "eat" or "tooth" or other characters in Chinese. It should be "Taiji" for the Chinese movement in boxing. The Wade-Gile system may be OK similar to Kungfu but it should be "Gongfu" in Pin Yin system of romanization.

It would be useful to learn the Pin Yin system since it is the official sytem and has been used at the US Library of Congress www.loc.gov. For comparisons,Cf."A Glimpse of the Chinese Language" in English www.Amazon.com online book catalog or www.rand.org for educational understanding.

Carlyle Invests in Chinese Firm

Washington Post, July 8, 2008 page D4: Communication is the key to satisfaction.

Carlyle Group, the DC private-equity firm run by David Rubenstein, said it will invest $87 million in privately owned Sinorgchem,a Chinese maker of chemical used in rubber products.

Sinorgchem is the biggest Chinese supplier of para-phenylenediames (PPDs), a key chemical additive used to make rubber products, Carlyle said. China's consumption of rubber is driven by growing local automobile markets and increasing relocation of global tire production capacities to China. PPDs are important in tire production, as they can prevent premature aging of rubber, the statement said.

Sino-American Economics in Energy

Washington Post,July 4th,2008 on page D3: AES buys stake in Chinese wind farm:

AES boughty 49% of a wind farm owned by Guohua Energy Investment in China's Inner Mongolia region for $10 million to tap rising demand for renewable power in the world's second largest energy consumer. The Guohua Hulunbeier Wind Farm, which started commercial operations in September, has a capacity of 49.5 megawats. AES, a power producer based in Arlington, aims to benefit from China's goal to become the world's top wind power producer in five years. I ranks 6th now.

Here is another evidence of positive Sino-American Economics.

Paulson makes case for reforms:WashPost,7/3/08

Page D2: Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr. said the United States must build a tougher regulatory system that can allow financial institutions to fail without causing wider economic turbulence. In a speech in London, Paulson said tht US Federal Reserve needs sweeping new powers that would make it easier to get information on financial institutions - and to intervene if necessary. My comment: Such is the expansion of the public sector over the private sector, the mix of both sectors. Sino-American Economics re stragetic economic dialogue would strengthen the public sectors over the private sector in US-China economic relations. Reflecting American history, the New Deal under FDR was a case in point for the wellbeing of the people in the United States. I have reason to believe that a new president after January 20, 2009 would stress the public sector for the wellbeing of the people in USA. Today is July 4th,National Holiday in USA for Americans deserving life, liberty and pursuit of happiness with decent living. Nobody would impugn, indeed!
