Moyers is a media celebrity. His main topics are democracy, money and media. "Money is choking democracy to death," he says, while the "compliant establishment media" look on. Hugh disparities in wealth have turned our shining city upon a hill into a "gated community whose privileged occupants...are removed from the common life of the country." While ordinary citizens watch their pensions and job security evaporate, the top 1 percent of households now has more wealth than the bottom 90% combined. "Freedom in America," Moyers says, "has come to mean the freedom of the rich to get richer even as millions of Americans are thrown overboard." The author is engaged in truth telling: saying what cannot be said, yet must be said in 404 pages. His truth telling is the same as my lectures in the past. What a coincidence!
Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao,an independent observer of American socio-economic society since 1947 with unabashed liberalism favoring democratic reform similar to the reforms in China as I have seen with my own eyes since 1981. Deng's reform started in 1978,thirty years ago. I have reason to believe that there will be reforms in USA after January 20, 2009.
