Celebrating Lincoln:Washington Post,5/9/09 page B1

"With Malice Toward None and with Amity toward all" The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Exhibition illustrates the former president's life with his personal items. Today and Tomorrow at the Library of Congress. www.loc.gov. Here are my reflections:-

In Pin Yin system of romanization,"Lin" means "forest" and "Ken" means "earnest" i.e. "earnest forest" to imply Log Cabin. The new penny with head of Lincoln and Log Cabin as the tail in 2009. How fitting and proper in my way of thinking about Lincoln. "A Glimpse of the Chinese Language" in English to explain Pin Yin system as phonetic alphabets is available at www.loc.gov(Library of Congress online catalog for reference.) It is also available free of charge in pdf format online at www.rand.org as public service.

Moreover,I remember I studied Gettysburg Address at an American high school in Shanghai(1942-43) apropos of the last lines- "of the people,by the people and for the people" and "the nation shall not perish from the earth." I am reminded of the USA and the People's Republic of China with peoples as the focus from the grassroots re the common goal of both nations in the Preamble of the Constitution, the supreme law of the land for the folks i.e. "Lao-bai-xing" old hundred surnames i.e. the term of endearment for all citizens.

Francis Shieh aka Xie Shihao who was educated in China and in the USA since 1926 to date as a lifelong student with interest in the wellbeing of the common folks as populism under President Obama of USA and President Hu of China, the most populous nation in the world.
"Philosophy of Mencius" is also listed at www.loc.gov.

Confucianism stresses the people as the most important component of a nation with endorsement of the Chinese leaders in education in mainland including Hong Kong and Macao and in Taiwan as the custom, tradition and culture of China. Moreover, ethnic Chinese overseas do honor Confucius regardless of their citizenship. In other words, Confucianism is universally respected as the way of life apropos of ethics and morality in the minds and hearts of Asians in particular. Needless to say,Westerners would be interested in Confucianism IF they have an opportunity to be exposed to Confucianism in schools.
