MGM Mirage announces hotel project in China

Washington Post, June 20, 2008 page D6: A Plan for a joint venture on a non-gambling hotel in China. The Las Vegas-based casino company says its hospitality arm, MGM Mirage Hospitality, plans to provide development and management services for the plaza project in Tianjin, China. It would include two towers, with a luxury hotel to be named MGM Grand Tianjin, condo and office, spa and restaurant facilities. The Chinese partner in the joint venture is Diaoyutai State Guesthouse.

Page A12: China takes the flavor out of menus: Official English translations of the names of more than 2,000 native dishes, suggesting that restaurants use these for Olympic visitors rather than the sometimes startling local names. For example, diners should be offered "Mapo tofu" instead of "beancurd made by a pockmarked woman" and "steamed pullet" rahter than "chicken without sexual life."
