Is Google making us stoopid? By Nicholas Carr, author of "The Big Switch: Rewiring the world, from Edison to Google" published earlier this year.

Page 58 "Experiments demonstrate that readers of ideograms(or ideographs) such as the Chinese, develop a mental circuitry for reading that is very different from the circuitry found in those of us whose written language employs an alphabet."

My comment: Pin Yin system of romanization(or Latinization) is phonetic alphabets to represent Chinese characters thereby easing the unwieldy Chinese language aprops of the characters re ideogram to convey the meaning to communicate with the Chinese people. Visitors to Beijing,China for Olympics,I would recommend "A Glimpse of the Chinese Language" www.rand.org or www.Amazon.com online book catalog for explanations of the Pin Yin system of romanization to facilitate the communication of Westerners to folks in China without knowledge of the Chinese characters. Therefore, Pin Yin system maybe the breakthrough of such problems between the East and the West for understanding.
