Washington Post, Friday, Sept.4, 2009 Page A18:
The accord would be developed under the auspices of the Financial Stability Board, an international body that was recently expanded to include major emerging economies such as China India and Brazil.
As Biden praises Stimulus Plan, Concerns remain: Many economists share Biden's assessment that the stimulus has helpted stem the economic slide, they say it is hard to determine how large this role has been. FED Chairman Bernanke maintains such view so far.
Comment: The empirical evidence is to be watched in the days to come...

Lunar Year of the Ox until Feb.14, 2010:Year of the Tiger
Greetings to all. I was born in the Year of the Tiger in 1926. Effective Feb.14, 2010 on Valentine's Day, Lunar Year of the Tiger comes back again. According to the Chinese Zodiac, I will be 84, still an octogenarian striving to be a centenarian in the year 2026.
The sequence puts Rat first(2008) and then ox(cow) in 2009 Tiger in 2010, Hare, 2011 Horse,2012,Ram(sheep) 2013, Monkey in 2014, Rooster 2015,Dog 2016, Boar, Dragon 2017 and Serpent(Snake) in 2018. One can easily go forward or backward every 12 years to learn the zodiac for reference. It is up to the reader to imagine such anecdote. In Pin Yin,"Yishi or 'quwen."
Such imagination works well. I eat like a tiger and those who are born in the year of the Roaster or (chicken) do eat like such fowl plus the habit of rising early as a morning person.
Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao sharing a bit of cultural humor with readers to find out such culture in the East may be applicable to the West. Former President Jimmy Carter was born in the Year of the Rat and he did good works for the poor i.e. feeding the hungry. His birthday is Oct.1st, the national holiday of China. In histor,Carter announced the normalization with China decades ago. Such seredipity may be considered as Sino-American Economics in action for mutual benefit in the 21st century.
One of the First Ladies believes in Astrology relative to heaven and zodiac may be relevant to animals in heaven with a small "h." The Capitalized H should be reserved for rational homosapiens with faith, hope and Love.
Food for thought with fun in the mundane world. Thursday, September 3, 2009 at 3.42 p.m.

Three cases of interest with Pin Yin annotations
1.USAToday, September 2, 2009 page 6A:
Drunken driving cases spike in China for reference in USA:
"Bottoms up" culture i.e. Cheers or Drink a toast: "Gan bei" in Pin Yin system of romanization.
Chinese traditional expression: "Among bosom friends, a thousand cups are too few."
In Pin Yin: " Jiu feng zhi ji qian bei shao." for above statement.
Next line in continuation: "Hua bu tou ji ban ju duo." i.e. When there are conflicts in dialog, even half sentence is too many."
2. The above situation may be modified when I meet superb students at www.Dictyon.net, the gateway to global languages, I would say: "Shuo hua tou ji qian ju shao." i.e. When we have mutual interest in our talks, even one thousand words are not enough!
3. Seven Steps to the Study of Wisdom:
1.The more you read: "Du shu yue duo" in Pin Yin
2.the more you know: "Zhi shi yue duo"
3.the more you know: "Zhi shi yue duo"
4.the smart you grow: "Cai hua zeng zhang"
5. The stronger your voice:"Fa yan qiang jian"
6.Speaking your mind openly:"Yan zhi cheng li"
7.Making your choice wisely:"Xuan ze ming zhi"
The above English and Chinese expressions may be useful for all folks to ponder and reflect for thoughts.

70th anniversay of World War II and other thoughts
I do remember Second World War when I was a high school student at Hautes Etudes near Beijing, China. We were forced to study Japanese language after Pearl Harbor attack in December 1941. I had to leave North China to be back to Shanghai at age 17 for my university education at St. John's University(1943-46) due to the fear of being forced to join the Japanese army during that period. Well, that is history and I do recollect"hui yi wang shi" the sufferings of the war."Zhan zheng de tong ku"
When I think back in decades,I feel like a young student with rejuvenation. In Pin Yin:"Fan lao huan tong" as my state of mind to keep learning to stay cool and stay informed.
Today is September 2nd,I wish the readers will be septuagenarians and then to Octogenarians and eventually to centenarians. Amen!
As an octogenarian retireee, I worked and saved a lifetime but encounters triple setback at present: asset losses, diminished home values and rising costs. I wonder if Congress would explore solutions to the economic hardship that seniors face nowadays!?
Re: Health care issues in the Headlines lately:
In Pin Yin: "Zhong shuo fen yun" i.e. Folks tell their own stories in USA. Plus "Ge shu ji jian" i.e. Each person holds his/her views.
I would recommend for seniors to remember the following in USA or in China as the positive mindset for spirituality i.e. mental health as human capital in Sino-American economics.
"I set my mind to be happy everyday, though the happenings may not be ideal; No matter whatever comes, I am determined to have happy mood with upbeat attitude."
In Pin Yin, "Mei tian wo yu kuai,ye xu bu li xiang; wo jue ding yao you kuai le de xin tai
."
Happiness is not material consumption over desire only, we must add intellectual pursuit, spiritual satisfaction with good health. That is my formula to be shared with all since such publication in Shanghai when I lectured there in 1980s.

USAToday,Sept.1,09 page 1B : US and China
Both China and the USA were creating more bubbles in trying to combat the global crisis. Said Andy Xie, a prominent former Morgan Stanley economist, told Bloomberg news that the Shanghai exchange is in deep bubble territory. Xie Shihao shares such view but the same last name would only mean the offspring from the same family clan 500 years ago as per the Chinese tradition.(sic)"Wu bai nian qian shi yi jia." in Pin Yin system of romanization.
Page 4A: Mexico's health care system lures Americans: A health care plan with no limits, no deductibles, free medicines, tests, X-rays, eyeglasses even dental work-all for a flat fee of US$250 or less a year but the deal may not last long!?
Watching their wallets: Former Floridians use Mexico's health care program to save money with photo published today.
Comment: Don't drink the water. Amigo.
Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao, a student for medical costs in the world to make comparisons. But money is only one of the factors for assessment, care by care-giver is more important for patients

Sequel to my blog dated August 16th:Foreign Policy magazine July/Aug.issue
Foreign Policy,September/October 2009 issue apropos of PEI's article in July/August issue of Foreign Policy.
Page 10: "Why Asia Wins": K. Mahlubani, Dean, National University of Singapore wrote his letter to the Editor:
"Pei's article makes no effort to explain the remarkable development of Asia especially China"
Comment: Pei Minxing left China in 1980s and he should be aware of the positive development of China with fairness as an associate, working for Council of Foreign Relations.
Mahbubani wrote further that Pei seems to suggest that the US can continue on autopilot and will always remain on top. Pei should read the insightful article by Henry Kissinger published in the Washington Post on Sunday,August 30, 2009. Moreover,Nobel Laureate Joseph Stiglitz also published an analytical article about US and China. Pei is more focused to his own view on politics from his background in China instead of China's recent economic achievement.
Mahbubani's book "The New Asia Hemisphere: The Irresistible Shift of Global Power to the East" should be a good reference for all Asia watchers especially the development in China.
Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao, an octogenarian student of economics, comparing notes with leading scholars to pursue up-to-date knowledge with avid zeal.

US stock drop after Chinese sell-off:WashPost,Sept.1st
Washington Post, September 1, 2009 on page A8:
China's Shanghai composite index had skyrocketed more than 90% from January through early August, which led some investors to wonder whether the country would help lead the world out of a recessin. But much of that growth seems to have been propelled by massive government lending programs that officials have begun to rein in. Chinese markets have been sliding since early August, and the index plummeted 6.7% on Monday. It is down 2% since August 4, sending China into bear-market territory.
The unease in China weighed on commodities prices in the United States.
"China set the stage for what happened today," said Ned Douthat, vice president of Ockham Research. The two markets are going to be inexorably tied for the foreseeable future."
Such in my rationale in my blogs in the past for Sino-American Economics.
