China's Games with 51 Gold Medals. Hooray ,Hurray!

Washington Post,August 31,2008 on page B2 Minxin Pei published: China's Glittering Games all Gold? Pei wrote: "As a Chinese-born academic who was skeptical about the merits of hosting Olympic Games where 400 million folks live on less than $2 a day." Such reasoning is questionable and grossly incorrect due to the lifestyle and the cost of living in China. Pei's negative scenario would not serve the best interest of readers who are positive about China's success. Olympic Games served as an eye-opener for the people in the world to see the achievements in China. As an American Fulbright Senior Scholar(Hong Kong,1989-1990) and a citizen of the United States since 1954,Pei's writeup renders disservice to other academics especially the ethnic Chinese in every nook and corner who are proud of the motherland for such a great sports event. Needless to say, such contribution is the pride of humanity as I would envision as an octogenarian with academic background in China and in the United States. Francis Shieh a.k.a.
