West and East are ONE in the world

Avery Dulles, 90; prominent Cardinal, Theologian left this mundane world at age 90.

He was the son of former Secretary of State John Foster Dulles and his uncle Allen Dulles was the director of CIA from 1953-1961. He was converted by philosophy of Thomas Aquinas. After graduating from Harvard in 1940, he served in the Navy during WWII and attended Harvard Law School. He entered the Society of Jesus(Jesuits) in 1946 and taught at Woodstock College in Maryland. His spiritual journey as his biography entitled "A Testimonial to Grace" was translated into Chinese by a faculty of St.Ignatius College in Shanghai,1945-1947 and was distributed in Taiwan in 1954. Cardinal Dulles became a preeminent theologian in the United States. It is timely to note that an alumnus of Georgetown donated US$ 75 million to encourage students to study Theology at Georgetown University. Spirituality is very much emphasized for such bequest to the oldest Christian university estabished in 1789.

Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao,has similar spiritual background as a faculty at Xuhui School in Shanghai from 1945-1947 with background at the University of San Francisco and a graduate degree from Georgetown in 1950. After 3 years of teaching at IHC in Los Angeles,the educator went to teach at Aquinas College in Michigan,1961-1964.

It is interesting to note that Bishop Aloysius Jin, S.J. of Shanghai has similar Jesuit background. Here is the meeting ground of the West and the East involving Sino-American spirituality as stressed by Confucius/ Mencius and Thomas Aquinas dedicated for the wellbeing of humanity.
