The Irish and Chinese immigrants who built America's first transcontinental line endured scaring heat, bone wracking cold, dust storms, avalanches, cave-ins, premature detonation of explosives and Indian attacks and other hardships in American history. I was a graduate student at USF and Georgetown from 1947-1950 but I am still a self-taught lifelong student ad infinitum.

I have met kind folks and unkind people as well but I uplifted my thoughts with positive scenarios and upbeat cheer. Blessed are the meek and unfortunate encounter happened to be a blessing in disguise. I believe in peace at heart with a spiritual mind. Laughter begets longevity and my nick name is "Chang sheng" i.e. long life.

My last name is SHIEH or Hsieh(Wade-Giles romanization) or Xie(official Pin Yin)or Shea of O'Shay from my good friends of Irish ancestry. Since the phonetic sound is close enough and I don't mind at all. However,my last name has 17 strokes in the traditional way of the Chinese character or 13 strokes in the simplified form. Either way is OK with me.

Since my last name means "Thank" and I thank you for reading my blogs on March 30, 2010 at 5 a.m.

China is involved in projects with the US to improve security at its civilian nuclear power plants, according to Linton Brooks, former head of the National Nuclear Security Administration. Brooks described that cooperation as fairly extensive.

Compared with the US and Russia, China has a tiny nuclear arsenal. It has less than 100 delivery systems and an estimated total of 800 warheads. USA has more than 2,000 deployed long-range warheads and 5,000 working warheads.

Shanghainese are always proud of Shanghai with cosmopolitan background as the center of China's culture of fashion. The brand name of Shanghai sounds impressive to folks in China and overseas as well.

The Wu dialect is spoken by 80 million folks and Cantonese circa 70 million as estimated.

Shanghai has the reputation as the melting pot gaining currency with momentum from lots of High-Rises as the gateway to be the host of World Expo from May 1 to Oct.31,2010. The Bund has been renovated with half a million folks to enjoy the view to Pudong on March 28,2010.

Teachers are respected from the Confucian tradition and heritage and the students aim to study economics with pragmatic awareness.

Phoenix TV reports on Sunday morning, March 28th re the purchase of Marriott Hotel by managers of private enterprise from Shenzhen, China. Such deal is the new happening of Sino-American economics as another business deal.

In Australia,Chinese bought housing with data from 5% to 14% from past years,as reported by photos from Australia via Phoenix TV, Hong Kong.

VP Xi of China visits Sweden. The global recession of 2008-09 led to a steep drop in orders for Sweden exports especially cars and trucks. China purchased Volvo auto as a matter of mutual benefit between Sweden and China. Sweden also has nuclear capability in the past years as reported by C-Span radio this morning.

Commerce Minister thinks otherwise:"China's exporters could be hurt if the Chinese currency,RMB or Yuan strengthens because it would make Chinese products more expensive overseas. We have to think about our employment and stability." Two views for reader's thoughts! What about American consumers to buy Chinese products? High prices for jobless folks to pay? Good or not really?

Well,the foreign exchange market is determined by the law of supply and demand but there may be gaps for consideration since Economics is an inexact science.(knowledge)

A study from the National Bureau of Economic Research found that public debt levels become perilous when they reach 90% of GDP. By that point, interest rates may be higher as investors demand greater returns on federal securities, while masive interest payments detract from key government functions. The interest can get so burdensome that the nation cannot afford to repair its highways or educate its children or provide other essential services," says Isabel Sawhill of the Brookings Institution. "You become a much weasker nations." According to the CBO, US public debt could approach 100% of GDP by 2020, given current spending levels and obligations for entitlement programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. Assumptions are to be validated.

Seniors living longer lives from Octogenarians to centenarians

The seniors are the fastest growing demographics, making it a distinguished force without economic clout as retired persons. There are circa 500 million folks age 65 or older around the world.

Statistics shows that there will be 580,605 centenarians in the USA in 2040. By 2050, seniors will make up 21% of the population. Advanced medicine has played a part in the life expectancy with positive mentality plus Chinese food could be other factors. Cheerful upbeat with faith,hope and love would be the blessings from etiology.

According to AARP studies, Americans 55 and older accounted for 23% of the more than one million Americans who filed for bankruptcy in 2007. Seniors are unable to meet living expenses with Social Security benefits. Much is attributed to taxes and increase in utility payments plus high cost of medical care.

Health Care Law may or may not be a blessing for the elderly. That remains to be seen in the days ahead.

One in 10 Chinese adults already has disease and another 16% are on the verge of developing it,according to a new study by New England Journal of Medicine. The finding nearly equals the US rate of 11% and surpasses other Western nations, including Germany and Canada.

The change is happening very rapidly, both in terms of their economy and apospos of their health effects," said David Whiting, an epidemiologist at the International Diabetes Federation.

Chronic ailments, such as high blood pressure and heart disease, have been climbing in rapidly developing countries like China, where many people are moving out of farms and into cities where they have more sedentary lifestyles.

Greater wealth has led to sweeping diet changes, including eating heavily salted foods, fatty meats and sugary snacks - boosting obesity rates, a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes. "EATING LIKE THE POOR" may be a good guideline for the rich!

IMF tells wealthy nations to watch debt:WashPost

The economic crisis is leaving deep scars in fiscal balances, particularly in the advanced economies," John Lipsky, the IMF's No. 2 official, told the China Development Forum in Beijing,China. He said countries that have been going into debt to stimulate their economies should prepare for belt tightening steps next year.

The IMF projects that gross general government debt in the Group of Seven advanced economies, except Germany and Canada, will rise from an average of about 75% of GDP at the end of 2007 to about 110% of GDP at the end of 2014. Lipsky said. "The balloning of debt also comes amid rising health and pension spending and large public debt could lead to higher interest rates and slower growth."

"A higher public savings rate will be required to ensure the long-term fiscal sustainability of the United States.

"America's national debt -$12.5 trillion - has been growing by leaps and bounds over the past decade and threatens to swamp overall economic output. About half of it is owned by global investors, with China holding the largest stake."

Gross National Happiness (GNH) is based on economic activity - recognizes 9 components of happiness:
1. Physchological well-being; Annotated as mindset/mentality
2. ecology; ditto: environment
3. health; = health care
4. education; = learning and training
5. culture; = tradition and custom
6. living standard; = lifestyle
7. time use = allocation of time resource:daily function
8. community vitality; = activity in the community
9. good governance. = leaders for the benefit of folks

I believe I have sent my past blogs with the same rationale for the belief in faith,hope and love of wisdom under Confucianism.

"Almost Everyone's Guide to Economics" is a book with witty remarks from Galbraith. A book review was published via www. Atlantic Economic Journal,September 1979. He left this world at the age of 97 but his influence has been in the minds and hearts forever. He visited China in 1972 with comments about the bike riders in China to go places and to reduce pollution. Now, such way of life is gaining momentum in USA.

"It is shameful that in a country this wealthy, so many people go without adequate health care. Insuring them is a moral imperative. It is also shameful that today"s leaders are prepared to pass on so much debt to future generations. That, too, is a moral issue: If unchecked, the debt will erode American prosperity and hurt the poor most of all. Our judgment is that passage of health-care reorm, as maddeningly imperfect as it is, would put the country in a better position to deal with both challenges." Such conclusion with the rationale for morality is similar to my prior blog re Adam Smith as a moral philosopher and an economist.

I have also noted about waste and fraud as issues of human behavior. If folks would shun greed and work for the best interest of patients,our society would be better off in the days to come. Let us wait to see the empirical evidence in the years to come.

Recollection of American history with thoughts

In 1814 Francis Scott Key writes the"Star Spangled Banner" following the bombardment of Fort McHenry. I brought the kids to visit during the 1960s. We honor the Anglo-Saxon heritage now and the British is coming for coordination to fight Terrorism. China is helping Afghanistan as well with the same goal of USA and UK in the 21st century.

I am named Francis but I wish to modify the last lines for "Land of the Free(Enterprise added) and Home of the Brave(bureaucracy added) Perhaps such thought would be apt to describe the current issue of Health Care Bill, the talk of the nation. I heard the speech by MIT economist Jonathan this morning with interesting and lively discussions.

The perception and reception would depend on individual situations. Nobody can give a clear cut answer with variable assumptions in economics. We need to see the empirical evidence in the years to come. Human behavior is the point and Adam Smith is a professor of moral philosophy and an economist. Confucianism may be studied for ethics and morality for Sino-American Economics.

AES sells 15% stake to China Investment

Global power company AES, based in Arlington, said it raised $1.58 billion by selling a portion of the company to a subsidiary of China Investment Corp.

China Investment bought 125.5 million shares of AES stock for $12.60 each. It gains a seat on AES's board.

CIC, with about $300 billion in assets along with other state-controlled companies, has been buying assets around the world. Such business transactions are empirical evidence of China's market system. Such mix of private sector and public sectors may be observed in other nations as well.

China's holdings dipped to $889 billion in January. Japan, the second largest holder cut as well ,settling at $765.4 billion.

A plurality of economists cited a consumers retrenchment as a BIGGEST RISK looming over the economic recovery. Such rationale is similar or identical to my prior blog apropos of the value of Chinese currency yuan or Renmingbi. If consumers pay more for Chinese products,more retrenchment would occur leading more risks for economic recovery. The only way is to see the gradual changes,not sudden change for the well-being of USA and China.

Foreign Exchange rate is determined by Demand & Supply

President Obama singled out China, saying that a change in the value of its currency was a central step in rebalancing a situation in which the United States served as the consumer engine for the entire world, racking up large trade deficits as a result. China, by contrast, accumulated large trade surpluses that Obama said should now be used to expand domestic consumption, and increase the products it imports from countries such as the United States. Such is the issue of issues for open discussions from all thinkers in the world.

It is known that China is buying products from the United States especially high tech equipments that China wants for technological updating for development. Would US be willing to sell to China to improve the balance of trade? American consumers are benefited by the low cost of products from China as seen in stores in USA. If RMB,the Chinese currency is valued upward,American consumers have to pay more thereby causing more hardship for the jobless folks during the global financial crisis. Moreover,if China sells less resulting economic slowdown thereby affecting fragile global economy leading to a difficult period for economic recovery. China's economists(leaders) would make assessment of policy for China's situations and American leaders would see fit to make policy changes for America such as the health care policy et al.

China i.e."Zhong guo" meaning the Middle Kingdom which may be another Kingdom being sought by folks of all faith. "Zhong hua ren min gong he guo" i.e. People's Republic of China for the reason being the most populous nation in the world. Such nomenclasure is also fitting and proper.

It is high time to exchange the technological expertise with engineers specialized in railways in China for mutual benefit.

Gary Lucke was the Governor of Washington State and an American citizen of Chinese ancestry. His grandfather came to USA as a laborer and may or may not be involved in building railway in California many decades ago in American history.

In other words,some greedy folks in China but the government is promoting a harmonious society with roof above their heads.

In US, foreclosures are prevalent i.e. mortgages are foreclosed causing folks to be evicted or displaced. Americans need to have life,liberty of pursuit of happiness guaranteed by the Constitution. Happiness means a place to live and nobody would impugn except the homeless and the number seems to be going upward unfortunately.

Reflection of bygone years: Lives in the 21st century are full of new high-tech products that folks can't imagine not having. I was born before TV was invented and I remember seeing a TV in Chicago on my way to Washington in 1948. Nine years later,I bought my first TV on credit in San Jose,California in 1957 when the first boy was born. Now the internet is widely used in China and in USA. As a matter of fact, there are more netizens in US now.

Well,that is advancement in science and technology but we need languages for communication so I am still a student to learn the American language and culture from various sources. Mr. Sylvester left the mundane world on Feb.7th at his home in Hereford, Arizona with lung cancer" I came to this world on Feb.7,1926.

A former Navy pilot, Mr. Sylvester joined the Foreign Service in 1961 and emerged as a leading Asia specialist. He worked in Vietnam and Taiwan before moving to Washington for China Desk duties including draftng a 1971 letter to Chiang Kai-shek explaining the reason behind President Richard Nidon's historic visit to China. The mission to China began the process of opening its relations with the United States."

Back in early 1960s, I was teaching Economics in Los Angles,California and met Richard H. Moorsteen at the RAND Corporation,Santa Monica,California.I rendered my professional services to RAND from 1959-1961 on part-time basis and became a full-time researcher from January 1964-September 1965. During that period, I published "A Glimpse of the Chinese Language" RAND Paper#3078 in March 1965 with the intent to promote the opening of China via the Pin Yin system as hinted on page 8. Richard Moorsteen published "Remaking China Policy" Harvard University Press,1971 with the same intent to help USA to establish normal relations with China for mutual benefit of two nations.

Mr.Jay Mathews continued in his article:"Charles Sylvester moved to Shanghai in 1987 and served two years as the American Consul General." I was a Visiting Consultant for the United Nations Development Program(UNDP) and lectured in Shanghai and Beijing during 1986-l987.

Mr. Sylvester was pleased to see China's economic reforms during the last two decades apropos of the emerging market economy to join the international community such as WTO for trade and other activities in globalization.

On the same page,Jacques Polar helped design IMF's basic economic framework. Dr. Polar passed away at the age of 95. He was born in Rotterdam in 1914 and was a student at the University of Amsterdam. He moved to Geneva to work as an assistant for the first Nobel laureate Jan Tinbergen who developed "Convergence Theory" with the insights of the convergence of economic systems in the global context for the benefit of humanity as an outstanding economist with vision.

He published accounting antics: "Fraudulent tax revenue forecasts" with a comic photo of a school and the sayings of the teachers in the light vein:"I finally understood negative numbers when they are just like the US budget deficit." The word" Nagative" may be desirable in medical jargon but not in economics and politics.

"Economists engage in endless debate about the long-run revenue maximizing rates for any tax,whether it is a cigarette,gas,general sales,property or income tax. All the taxes have been raised and lowered many times at the federal, state and local levels, so there is a good deal of empirical evidence about what the effects are likely to be." There are vested interests and personal bias,indeed.

There are disputes among economists in China or in any other nation for making policy decisions. That is economics in action for mature folks to understand or otherwise. The reader will have the volition for making judgment in shades of meaning.

A Chinese emigre who lived in Washington D.C. for the past ten years, passed away on Feb. 18, 2010.

Mrs. Edwards was born in Hangzhou,Zhejiang Province, China. (There is a quotable quotes known to Chinese: In Pin Yin: "Shang you tiantang,xia you SuHang" In English: Above there is Heaven and below are Suzhou and Hangzhou. Such expression is stated to imply the two beautiful places like heaven on earth.

My paternal grandfather was a native of Suzhou and my maternal grandfather was from Hangzhou. Both were officials and the one with decorated medals on the robe during the Qing Dynasty.(1644-1911) I have seen the photo of my paternal grandpa in my family album for remembrance.

The same day I shall leave for Shanghai as a native of Shanghai to visit World Expo in advance. In the past decades,I lectured Economics in China almost every year since 1981 in Shanghai,Beijing,Guangzhou, Hong Kong and other cities as well.

"The idea is to send a group of staffers to China to focus on trade,foreign policy, infrastucture and national security. His focus is very much in evidence in the 21st century with his scholarly vision.

Professor John K.Galbraith was interested in China and visited China in early 1970s. I offered him a Chinese name in translation and transliteration: Gao er bu lei shi" in four Chinese characters(words) from the Pin Yin system of romanization* i.e. the phonetic equivalent sounds like Galbraith. The meaning in English: Tall but not similar. 1. If the food is too spicy,put a bit of salt in your mouth,spit it out after a gargle.
2. If your teeth become yellow, chew peanuts in your mouth and brush your teeth for three minutes for instant efficacy.
3. If your skin is burnt,put some tooth paste on your skin to stop pain or bleeding.
4. If you find tea stain in your cup,use tooth paste to clean it well.
5. If you put eye drops in your eye with open mouth,you'll be OK without blinking.
6. If you have ulcer,i.e. sore in your mouth,put Vitamin C tablet on the spot to relieve pain while dissolving. For more serious ulcer,add Vitamin B2 to the sore spot.
7. If you have dust in your eye,close your eye and cough a few times and the dust will come out.
8. If you use a bit of salt to wash on both sides of your nostrils,you'll have tiny pores for good health.
9. If you have a mosquito bite,put on soap at once to relieve itching.

20.If you prepare to cook shrimps,put salt and baking soda into a bowl and use hand to tweak a while with clean water to soak,then wash it. You will have tender and crystal shrimps.
21.If you cook meat,soak the meat into soda water for 15 minutes and then add condiments to make meat very tender and tasty.
22. If you use the leftover tea to be soaked in water for a few days to spread to the roots of a plant,your plant will be growing faster.

It is about a small factory at the city of Lishui in suthern Zhejiang Province.(Wu dialect is being spoken by circa 80 million folks in Zhejiang,Jiangsu and Shanghai area.) Hessler clearly came to love China in the more than a decade he spent there, and he was endlessly surprised, amused and delighted by it. George Washington possessed physical energy, strength and stamina. He also placed significant emphasis on proper social bearing, appearance and conduct.

A leader must acquire a discipled and orderly mind - one accustomed to thinking hard as his body is inured to working hard for folks to emulate. He escaped moving his 9,000 troops across the East River under cover of darkness and heavy fog, leaving the British astonished.

Chairman Mao had similar encounters with KMT troops in Chinese history.

How to face a balancing act?

There are expansionary and recessionary gaps when Aggregate Demand and Aggregate Supply curves intersect in a Cross Model. There is no magic or pat answer to balancing the global economy as a whole.

Korean dancers warm up before the star of the Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade in New York City. Spectators stood 10 deep, stepping on firecrackers that popped amid floats and balloons, celebrating the Year of the Tiger. It comes every 12 years according to the Zodiac.

Here is the cultural affinity of Korean and Chinese culture with folks in Okinawa, Japan and Singaporeans also honored such great occasion. The kids in Singapore painted their face as Tigers as shown on Phoenix TV in Hong Kong. I viewed such scenes with good memories of the past years in Shanghai when I was a kid about 4 years old. I also visited Korea and Japan,Singapore decades ago and I spent one academic year in Hong Kong. Asia is doing well in economic achievement and their lifestyle is worthy of note to Non-Asians.

As a lifelong learner, one of my focus is the intercultural identity of bilingual folks. Such cultures may be amusing,interesting, productive and creative in every sense of the meaning in the specific languages.

Saudi Arabia's oil exports to the United States last year sank below 1 million barrels a day for the first time in two decades just as China's purchases climbed above theat level, highlighting a shift in the geopolitics of oil from West to East. Comment: The East and the West are One World for economic globalization.

The drop in US demand is the result of not only lower energy consumption, but also great reliance on imports from Canada and Africa.That is the change of policy.

President Obama wants to reduce dependence on foreign oil and encourage renewable fuels. Saudi Arabia, meanwhile,seeks stable markets for its large oil reserve.

China's buoyant economic growth, meanwhile, is prompting Beijing to buy more Saudi oil, a trend Riyadh has encouraged through refinery joint ventures for mutual benefit.

US Secretary of Education Duncan spoke to Governors at the National Governors' Association on C-span radio last night with the support of the leaders in 50 States:-

The role of community colleges was emphasized for economic recovery with federal appropriation of $10 billion for the grassroots to have marketable skills to find jobs in a changing economy through training and retraining.

Alexander Meigs Haig Jr. was born on Dec. 2, 1924 in the Philadelphia suburb. He was 10 when his father died of cancer and left the family $5,000 in life insurance.

General Haig picked up a master's degree from Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. in 1962. Six of my works are listed at Georgetown University Library online catalog in the fields of China Studies and Economics as an alumnus of Georgetown University Graduate School, Class of 1950.

In January 1972, Gen. Haig led the advance team too China that laid the ground work for Nixon's historical visit. "A Glimpse of the Chinese Language" published in 1965 was a precursor of US-China relations. www.rand.org for reference.

Gen.Haig was president of United Technologies before being named Ronald Reagan's Secretary of State in 1981. I received a letter from Ronald Reagan when I was in Los Angeles doing statistical work at Farmers Insurance Group. I noticed that his signature was small but his later position was big as the president. What a contrast!

Feb. 17,1972: President Richard Nixon flew to Andrews by helicopter and departed for Kaneohe Marine Corps Station Oahu Hawaii, enroute to China.

President Nixon made the historic and highly publicized trip to the Far East to help formally normalize relations between the United States and the People's Republic of China. He returned to Andrews Feb. 28, 1972.

I visit Andrews Library to blog Sino-American economics for readers online.

I encouraged Dr. Hanshil Koh,professor of law,Tokyo University to translate "How American Laws Are Made" into Japanese and Korean languages with commendation from President Nixon.

I published my paper entitled "A Glimpse of the Chinese Language" in March 1965 and Henry Kissinger was a consultant at the RAND Corporation during that period. On page 8, I hinted that China be open to the world for the benefit of Sino-American Economics. Kissinger made a trip to China in 1971. I started my blogging www. "Sino-American Economics since 2000 to date to share my thoughts with readers as my passion as a graduate student from China to witness positive Sino-American economics for mutual benefit. I was a Fulbright Senior Scholar in Hong Kong,1989-1990 to represent American scholarship for promoting market economy aprops of globalization in the 21st century.

I was in Oahu, Hawaii on Sept. 3, 1947 on my way to the University of San Francisco from Shanghai,China and attended my son's wedding in the summer of 1990 in Oahu, Hawaii. I was an honorary citizen of Honolulu,Hawaii since 1969 and was commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel in 1970 doing eleemosynary work in the United States.

I taught Economics in Beijing in 1993-1996 using the textbooks by Richard T. Gill of Harvard that I contributed in 1973,1975 and 1980 in re the reforms to a market economy in China to join the international community.

1. Be law-abiding and support the Constitution with amendments as well.

2. Reduce hectic moods to practise the Doctrine of the Mean i.e. Moderation in activities.

3. Morally: Study Confucius/Mencius as the moral leader of the world.

4. Walking is a good exercise plus other related movements as work-outs.

5. Intellectual food is a MUST to sharpen the mind and warm the heart.

A meal should be like a traffic light,with something RED,something YELLOW and something GREEN.

You make a good point.Hand me that candy dish and I'll sprinkle some M&M's over the top. Close to the colors as described above.

RED means Redskin or American Indians as first Americans from Asia in American history thousand years ago.

YELLOW may mean yellow race for ethnicity:-
Asians:Chinese,Japanese,Koreans,Singaporeans,Malaysians,Thai,Indians from India and others in the Near West(Far East)

Steven Wieting,an economist at Citigroup says: "When you can consider that the declines in employment have been so profound, it would take tremendous growth to get that back. Getting something that looks like a good growth, clip can stabilize unemployment, but regaining all that was lost will take a lot of time."

This statement is similar or identical to my previous blogs i.e. it may take months or years for recovery. Patience is a virtue and we would like to be virtuous as Confucius/Mencius advised their disciples centuries ago.

College graduates in China are having a hard time to get jobs and their counterparts in USA get part time work or underemployed re their educational background.

Chinese language in a nutshell for your possible interest

China has more than 1.3 billion folks,almost a quarter of the population for humanity. Chinese speak the Chinese language in People's Republic of China,Hong Kong,Taiwan,Singapore,Malaysia and overseas Chinese in the world. More humans speak Chinese in the world than other languages so it is highly desirable for Non-Chinese to learn how to speak Chinese in order to be able to communicate with the Chinese on earth. Interaction develops understanding and understanding leads to peace in the world.

Chinese is unique to the fact that the written language can be read and understood by Chinese and educators in Korea and Japan re parts of Hanga and Kanji.

Folks in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces speak Wu dialect,circa 80 million and Cantonese speakers are estimated around 70 million in Guangdong,Hong Kong and many folks in USA as early settlers.

Reminiscing Shanghai in my mind on Jan.3rd Lunar New Year

(Continued from the prior blog) I have been under the influence of Confucius/Mencius since I was a youngster and my paper was published by China Missionary Bulletin(Maryknolls in New York) dated January and February 1951 issues. That is 59 years ago.

My maternal grandma used to take me to visit Jade Buddha Temple when I was a child and my father owned three houses named "The Alley of Three Happiness" on Gordon Road in the British settlement. I visited the place years ago with my sister and the present residents remembered the former owner Zia,Shanghai dialect for Shieh.

For film buffs :Visit Old Film Cafe to check out a famous movie "Fisherman's Song" and the filmmaker(photographer) was Zhou ke,the father- in -law of my daughter. His son became my son-in-law in 1978. That is family history.

On "Dao lun wen hua ming ren jie" a visitor can ask an artist to paint a name in English or Chinese into a miniature glass snuff bottle in a flash for a set price. Such work is truly impressive.

I had my way at Berger King as per the Ad: "You have your way" in Shanghai many times. The cost is less and the berger tastes the same but the ice cream cone is far less expensive.

I also remember President Jimmy Carter announced normalization with China in December 1979 and he promotes cooperation of two nations on both sides of the Pacific as per an interview conducted by Phoenix TV of Hong Kong on February 15, 2010 www.Ifeng.com for reference.

Faith is to believe what we do not see yet; the reward is to see what we believe in the days to come apropos of Sino-American economics in the works for positive ways.

1. The Chinese name of the Bund is "wai tan",the embankment of muddy waterfront. Restaurants,galleries and fashion boutiques are located.

2. Renmin Square was the former site of the race course.

3. The Park Hotel was the venue where my sister was married in early 1940s.

4. Grand Theater used to be the place to see American movies.

5. My family lived in the former French Concession with relatives nearby and they are still living there for more than six decades.

6. My father taught English at the former Anglo-Chinese college for 3 decades. He passed away when I was 7 years young.

7. The Subway Lines No. 1 and No. 2 are always crowded with riders that I encountered many times.

8. The TV are shown in public buses with songs and dances. Special gates are provided for seniors.

9.Confucian Temple is the place to pay respect of learning of a venerable teacher.

10. I started my teaching career in Shanghai since 1945 before I earned my B.A. degree in 1946 at St. John's University in Humanities and Social Sciences.

"U.S.News and World Report" published a special issue on February 2010 on "Age 100" as milestone to be centenarians. Page 34: Photo of an aging lady with photo of a Manchurian official with robe in office as the background. My grandparents were officials for Qing Dynasty.(1644-1911)

The following items are similar or identical to my past blogs:

1.Below normal intake of calories to slow aging and extend life span. (70% at best.)

2.Laugh a lot. Laughter begets longevity.

3.Exercise: Building longer telomeres,the tiny units of DNA that cap the end of chromosomes.

5.Good genes from active stock such as Laozi's spartan lifestyle.

WWII bombardier's can-do attitude gave lift at work and home. Attitude is the key for survival despite of unfortunate circumstances during our lifespan.

Col. Rosner,90, passed away on January 26 at the National Naval Medical Center with his wife by his side. Despite the military's initial doubts about their marriage, the Rosners were together for 52 years. The doubts were unwarranted perception.

Love has no borders regardless of race,color,creed or age etc. when there is serendipity arranged by the Divine Providence. Fifty-two years of togetherness on earth is certainly a tribute to all concerned until the one who preceded to leave this mundane world but the soul is immortal with faith,hope and LOVE in eternity.
