Energy: US,Chinese firms plan Texas wind farm

Washington Post, Oct.30, 2009 page A12: US and Chinese firms plan to build one of the largest US wind farms, a $1.5 billion project in Texas that would generate enough electricity for 180,000 homes. Good news for American home owners, indeed!

The US Renewable Energy Group, a private equity firm based in Washington, and Cielo Wind Power, a closely held wind developer in Austin, formed the Joint venture with China's Shenyang Power Group, according to a statement. A Power Energy Generation Systems, based in China and Shenyang's largest shareholder, will supply the turbines.

The planned 600-megawatt farm marks the biggest Chinese-American investment in US renewable energy, the companies said. It will be built in West Texas across 36,000 acres and be funded by Chinese comercial banks. - Bloomberg News.

The Council of Economic Affairs estimated that the stimulus had saved or created 600,000 to 1.1 million jobs. Professor Frank Lichtenberg of the Columbus Business School says the figures show a significant economic impact. That is a good sign on the road to recovery.

In China, the stimulus plan also provided jobs for the jobless. However, the final outcome remains to be seen in the days to come with empirical evidence.

China to seek remains of 1950 US Crash Victims: China will search for the remains of American victims from an Air Force bomber that crashed nearby 60 years ago, state media said Tuesday,a likely gesture of goodwill ahead of President Obama's first visit to the country, Nov. 15-Nov.18,09. Reports say thte US bomber caught fire and crashed on Nov. 5, 1950, while flying over southern Guangdong Province. Its mission was not known as per Associate Press. Washington Post, October 28, 2009 on page A23: Ethics and Morality in economic philosphy as the foundation of economics.

Harvard professor Michael Sandel with photo. Sandel, in the good company of Aristotle, contends that knowing the right thing to do to any institutions requires a determination of its purpose. And the purpose of government is not only to defend individual rights but also to honor and reward civic virtues - self-sacrifice and concern for our neighbor. The definition of justice, by nature, is a moral enterprise. Here we detect the common ground of US and China to share the moral philosophy of Adam Smith and Confucius/Mencius. I elaborated such thoughts in my thesis published at the China Missionary Bulletin,January and February 1951 issues by Maryknolls in New York.

Page A8: The Center for American Progress and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst's Political Economy Research Institute predicted that a $150 billion annual public and private investment in clean energy would produce a net increase every year of 1.7 million jobs. Let us wait and see the empirical evidence in the years to come. Such assessment is similar to my past blogs apropos of two sectors e.g. the public and private sectors for US/China to make investments for common good of the citizenry. Coping with unemployment:WashTimes,10/26/09

Washington Times, October 26, 2009 on p age B3:

Weak job market may persist for years, economists warn: It is a matter of educated guesstimates:

Jobs need skills and skills require training. For details, Cf. Keys for Economic Understanding www.ask.com or search used books at www.borders.books for reference.

Even before the recession, many jobs had vanished or been shipped overseas amid a general decline of US manufacturing.

Reason: Less labor cost yields more profits for CEOs.

The severest downturn since the Great Depression has accelerated the process.

Comment: A modified "New Deal" may be introduced by the Obama administration in the coming months if the recovery is not realized. Americans do need jobs to survive. Moreover, charity starts at homefront to honor the Constitution for the wellbeing of Americans.

AES(USA) taps into China's rush to wind power

Washington Post, October 26, 2009 on page 12A:

Virginia firm selling some fossil-fuel plants: Sino-American Economics in action:

Like many wind projects in China, this wind farm- which started generating power last month -is the product of US and Chinese investment, featuring Chinese-made wind turbines and tapping Chinese subsidies for the electricity sold. Europe will play a role too. Globalization is in evidence.

China's push into wind energy is a broader effort to reduce carbon emissions that contribute to climate change. Here we see clearly such cooperation and collaboration of USA and China as I envisioned.

Page 16A Kelly Barrett's letter to the Editor: I compare notes with other thinkers for verification of thoughts.

TIME for a Lifestyle: Identical to my past blogs for the same rationale:

Lifestyle changes and shifts in how we think and behave" That is my focus on human behavior in the prior blogs. Lifestyles of folks in US and China are different as I observed. Lifestyles affects human actions as economics in the move in all nations.

"Our happiness needs to begin coming from within ourselves, instead of from the brand labels of material objects and the false sense of accomplishment that firms have manipulated us into feeling when we buy into their schemes." Barrett stated with such forceful way. Credit system is a case of point for certainty.

Let us reiterate the Equation(FORMULA) for Happiness with philosophical underpinning.

Happiness is not material consumption over desire but to add intellectual pursuit+spiritual satisfaction+good health in the Numerator over the denominator of Desire.

Swine Flu anxiety produces mixed effects: Positive or Negative? As you like it or as you would think about it. A healthy state of mind generates a healthy body to avoid flu virus.

Some folks fear getting the vaccine, and alternatively, not getting the vaccine. Who cares or who cares too much? "Much ado about nothing" as per William Shakespeare (1564-1616).

According to AP survey of one thousand folks conducted revealed that 59% of the respondents were afraid of H1N1 virus, but 72% were uneasy about the potential side effects of the vaccine.

There is a line of demarcation between practicality and paranoia. The option is yours.

Economics of Trade to benefit all folks in the world

Economists agree that free trade best serves the interests of all nations. WTO has such mission as known.

The Law of absolute advantage holds that all states can produce some goods or services more efficiently, more cheaply, and of higher quality than can other states. This may be attributable to natural or human resources, climate or other factors. Such may be applied to Sino-American economics in action. The empirical evidence in the past years has validated such law.

Such law, first postulated by Adam Smith, the professor of moral philosophy was later modified by David Ricardo in his Law of Comparative Advantage. Confucius and Mencius stressed morality and ethics in economics of trade as well.

Such law recognizes that some countries may not have an absolute advantage in many or any products, hence they should produce those goods which they produce most efficiently and then trade for their other needs ensuing the world's production of goods and services to be maximized in free trade for a higher standard of living for all folks. This rationale may be applicable to Sino-American economics as I would envision in the 21st century and beyond.

Economics and Happiness Equation

Economics is a way of thinking in everyday life. It is truly urgent not to separate economics from living for individuals and to all nations in the mundane world.

If we explain fractions to drinkers, they might not know. But if we ask,"Which is better, two bottles of vodka for three people or three bottles of vodka for five peole? They will answer at once. They will say two for three,of course." They are familiar with their habits. To expand such in an elaborate way for good living. To wit: -

Happiness is material consumption over desire. That is known to all folks. But we must add intellectual pursuit, spiritual satisfaction and good health to the Numerator over the Desire as the denominator. Simple fraction to be modified but not all folks would reason with such equation for goal in life. Please ponder for such modified equation.

Words for thoughts and please pass on to other thinking folks to enjoy our lives better with additions instead of material consumption only.

Washington Post,Oct.10, 2009 on page A16 with Photo: Trade Furor is not warranted. To wit:

Economists have warned that such measures could inflame broder economic tensions between Sino-American Economics and ultimately hurt American consumers by raising prices. Such comments are the same as I sent my prior blogs. We are all consumers in USA.

Steven Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey defended the award. Coleman said:"It was a competitive bidding process which is how we award all our contracts."

Ikenson, the trade specialist, dismissed the controversy, saying, "It is in our national interest to get the biggerst bang for the buck."

Jim Penny sent a letter to the Editor of National Geographic Magazine:

"I have been working with the Chinese. They are energetic, driven, and hungry to improve their lives. They want their families to be happy, safe, and filled with hope that the future will be better. Consumer spending represents two-thirds of the US Economy. I sent my prior blog to the same apropos of Chinese Economy as well. C sector is circa 2/3 of GDP.

Economics of Health via Saliva or Slobber

As body fluid from the mouth, saliva is the substance that defends us against hostile organisms. It seems to have breathtaking potential.

Slobber moistens food and contains enzymes that helps digestion. Some are friendly bacteria to adhere to teeth and gums preventing inflections.

Saliva does interesting things. For elaboration, consult Professor Irwin Mandel of Columbia University.

'The Atlas of North American Engllish "by Charles Boberg

Professor of Linguistics(the scientific study of languages and their structure) at McGill University in Montreal writes:

"While it is true that there are subtle phonetic differences in the English spoken in Canadian cities like Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Montreal, and Halifax, these are small compared to the more prominent differences among US regions. Canada's regions, with the esxception of Newfoundland, have much more in common linguistically than US regions."

For folks in London,England,Mary,Merry and Marry are all pronounced the same; as are "gulf "and" golf."

Such nuance(difference in meaning) reminds of the Chinese language in Mandarin,Wu dialect and Cantonese. There are so many similarities and differences as I have observed as a lifelong student of languages with great utility(satisfaction) in economics. Chinese language(Mandarin and Wu) are offered at www.Dictyon.net for reference.

Languages are designed for communications and economics is relevant to all folks so there is the common ground of linkage of Economics and languages.

Americans and other English-speaking folks are encouraged to study Chinese and vice-versa (the other way around) for better understanding for folks in the 21st century apropos of mutual benefit. Can China Lead a Recovery?WashPost,10/6/09

Page A14: Many economists are wondering whether Chinese consumers, once a thrifty lot, will lead the world out of the recession. IMF said China China would do just that, thanks in part to the $600 billion stimulus package and a flood of banking lending. kIMF increased its forecast of Chinese growth to 8.5% in 2009 while lowering its foreecast for the US economy, which it said would shrink 2.7%.

According to marketing research by Ogilvy & Mather, 70% of Chinese children attend at least one extracurricular program, mostly English classes. Ten million are learning to play violin. One million Chinese people a year get cosmetic surgery.

The Chinese consumer now has the wallet to sustainably increase consumption spending. The question is the will." Mohamed El-Erian,Chief executive Pimco said. C sector occupies circa 2/3 of GDP in the US and in China as well.

My comment: English is needed in China and Chinese is to be encouraged in the United States for building human capital in both countries. Consumption is a matter of lifestyle apropos of human behavior in micro-economics.

But the Micro view would influence the Macro outlook in the days to come.

Reinventing America: Bicyclists in USA & China
