Economists for an Imaginary World:WashPost 9/30/09

Washington Post, Sept. 30, 2009: Page A23: Cf. "Keys for Economic Understanding" www.ask.com for reference.

"The problem with economists with the purer strain of free-market economics associated with the University of Chicago is not simply that it failed to predict the near collapse of the world financial system last year. The problem is that it believed such a collapse could not happen, that all risk could be quantified by mathematical models and that these quantifications could help us correctly price just about everything.(sic) Professor Galbraith challenged such and I do concur.

Every nation, no matter its economic or political system, has followed Keynes's prescription for combating a major downturn increasing public spending to fill the gap created by the decline of private spending. That is why the world economy seems to be inching back from collapse and why the nations that have spent the most, China in particular, seems to be recovering fastest."
Comment: The Keynesian Cross Model can be found in China's crossroads with externalities.

In the 1970s, economist Robert Lekachman observed that economics students had to master so much mathematics that they became emotionally invested in teh idea that the math they had learned explained - had to explain - the universe. It is high time to call for courses in macroeconomics with another disciple - history or psychology - to expose the comolexities of human institutions." I have sent my blogs in the past to stress human behavior and philosophy of life to understand the nature of economics.

"If mainstream economics does not change, it may eventually face the worst of all fates: market failure. How many students want to spend their lives quantifying a world that does not exist?"

Purposeful character with faith, hope and LOVE

Longevity with a goal in the mundane world would mean a health boost guided by reason to get out of bed everyday for folks in USA and in China.

Faith is the mental strategy to elevate cheer with upbeat apropos of Sino-American Economics.

Hope is to draw from the positive scenarios via the brain for intellectual endeavor.

LOVE is a slosh of dopamine over a caudate nucleus. Such could be in Pin Yin system of romanization in Chinese for "All or both anticipate sensitivity" with three Chinese characters of Dou-Pan-Min. In plain English to mean to spread liquid to central nerve as transmitter. Showing affection toward people on both sides of the Pacific in the name of humanity.

I would argue that C < REM That means Consumption is less than the Reformed Mind.

We must brace" simplicity as our lifestyle" e.g., to reform our mindset during financial crisis.

Ten Points/Pointers for readers with my thoughts

1. We can only fly by embracing each other as angels with only one wing.(sic)

2. When others throw bricks at the person,he/she can lay a firm foundation with success.

3. What lies before or behind us are petty things to be compared to what lies within our hearts and minds.

4. Rice is a major ingredient to be fermented to make the Japanese drink known as sake. Perhaps it is like life in the mundane world with profound reflections.

5. The neck in the body is the thyroid gland. It has no bearing with necking, however.

6. Baseball pitcher Jim Palmer is the only Hall of Famer to notch World Series wins in three decades. Baltimore Orioles won in 1966, 1970 and 1971 and in 1983 when I was a witness.

7. We use the word "stumped" to mean defeated or outwitted. But in playing cricket, the pitcher who manages to hit the wicket (or stump) has outwitted the batter. C'est la difference!

8. Gibraltar, an island in the Mediterranean Sea, natives speak Rock English, a blend of Spanish and English. Rock English has nothing to do with Rock Fish.

9. Red Sea comes by its name properly and occasionally when severe algae blooms. However, when algae die, it turns the seas's vivid, blue-green water red. Red Sea may mean good luck due to the bright color with Asian heritage.

10. A husband thinks that he "bossess" the house but he"houses" the boss. The owner of a house may be addressed as the boss but the wife may be properly addressed as the homemaker instead of a housewife. The rhyme may be "what a life without a wife" Comment: If or when the boss is gone,be a Socrates as the philosopher. Confucius was a moral philosopher with the same caliber known to the world.

Yantai makes waves with new marine -based economy

Washington Post,Sept. 23, 2009 page H8:

As a coastal city, with a 900 km-long coastline Yantai sees fully utilizing its marine capabilities as crucial to its development.

According to the Guidelines, Yantai will accelerate the pace of its drive toward a marine-reliant economy.

In the first four months of 2009, the shipbuilding and marine machinery manufacturing industry production value came to 3.9 billiion Yuan, an increase of 17% year-on-year.

Red is the color most frequently associated with Yantai, due to the ever popular Changyu wine sourced from the region, but that will change if the city succeeds in its bid to become a "blue tourism" resort.

I had the opportunity to lecture at Yantai University decades ago in 1980s and I enjoyed the city very much. I happened to learn a bit of the Mandarin accent of Shandong Province with fun.

1. When life serves a person with a lemon,do make lemonade as a matter of positive attitude.

2. Roses have thorns but thorns have roses. Look at the bright side in things for economic utility e.g. satisfaction. Everything is ontologically beautiful to appreciate aethetics.

3. Sounds may be stretched as musical tones such as the Chinese language being offered at www.Dictyon.net .

The Key to Understanding:WashPost,9/20/09-SC6

Washington Post,Sept.20,2009: The Importance of Punctuation -Even though rules may be changing for text-messaging and e-mailing, the rules have not changed for regular writing.

The main thing about punctuation is to notice it. Reading is not just getting the sense off the page; it is also about hearing the words; following an argument; listening." Here I remember the Chinese language may be translated or interpreted with nuance,a subtle difference in meaning from tones in Sino-American economics. Therefore, machine translation has problems and learning from the natives would be the best bet for learning Mandarin or Wu dialect.(Shanghainese) Moreover,Economics is a compound and complex field of inexact science involving Lingonomics with duplicity to a certain degree. Language-savvy and Savvy in Economics would be a difficult task, indeed!

The following is about English punctuation: -

If you put a punctuation mark in the wrong place, it can completely change the meaning of the sentence. For example, look at these two sentences. How does the comma change the meaning?

"Annie walked on her head, a little higher than usual." e.g. Annie has upside down position as an acrobat.

"Annie walked on, her head a little higher than usual." e.g. Annie is satisfied as to raise her head a bit.

Call me Tom. e.g. Tom said to himself.

Call me, Tom. e.g. Another person said to Tom to call him.

NFL looks to reach Chinese market with reality show

Washington Post, Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009 on page A1 and A19:

Bringing pigskin to land of ping pong: Cheerleaders and marching bands and playing flag football for a TV show that will run on CCTV(China Central Television) this fall. All in the hopes of converting tens of millions of Chinese into fans of American football. Such is the potential positive Sino-American Economics of Sports.

So far, there is little interest in fotball in China where the most popular sports are table tennis and badminton. While many young Chinese are big fans of the NBA and English soccer, both of which are bradcast on local TV, the glimpses they have gotten of American football are bewildering. Well,Chinese taste may be different but the world is getting closer and closer.

But there are small signs of real progress. According to the NFL, an estimated 400,000 people in China watched the 2008 Super Bowl. This year the figure grew to 2.2 million - a small sum given China's population but a positive sign given the game started at about 6 a.m. on a Monday in Beijing. Air Force Birthday on Sept. 18, 1947: 62 years of success et al

I arrived in the USA on September 8, 1947 and have noticed USAF as a branch of the military providing a beacon of hope for all folks all over the world.

Charles R. Bond, jr., a retired Air Force major general and one of the last surviving Flying Tigers, passed away on August 18, 2009 of dementia in Dallas. He was 94.

In September 1941, he left the Army Air Forces to volunteer for service in China as part of a secret program, the American Volunteer Group, nicknamed the Flying Tigers, under Gen. Claire Chenault. Made up of about 400 pilots and ground personnel and based in Burma, the Flying Tigers protected military supply routes between China and Burma and helped to get supplies to Chinese forces fighting the Japanese.

Gen. Bond was shot down twice. On May 4, 1942, three Japanese fighters zeroed in on his plane over Pao-shan, China. He was credited with downing nine Japanese planes. He said:"The good Lord had to be on our side" recalling his wartime experiences.

Wu Bangguo speaks Mandarin with Shanghai accent

For your information: In the US, Visiting legislator Wu bangguo speaks Mandarin, not Wu dialect even though he is a native of Shanghai. Needless to say, he can speak Shanghainese. The Chinese Minister of Commerce Chen Deming is also a native of Shanghai. He speaks Mandarin with a heavy Shanghai accent. I noticed such when I met him in Suzhou as he was the mayor of Suzhou. Australian students in Suzhou rated me as a tri-lingual person because when I spoke Shanghai dialect, they could not understand at all even though they thought they learned Chinese already! Interesting encounter, indeed. Language is the nitty-gritty of Sino-American Economics of education,a form of human capital.

Former Chinese President Jiang is a graduate of Jiaotong University of Shanghai but he speaks Mandarin or Shanghainese with Yangzhou accent. Multi-accented voices, indeed!

I speak Mandarin with a slight Shanghai accent but a lot of folks in China and in the US think of my Mandarin as a native of Beijing. Such may be considered as mistaken identity at best.

In deeper US Trade deficit, good news for world's economy

Washington Post, Sept. 11, 2009 on page A21: To quote below:

"Economists are hoping that a rebound in global economies as well as further weakening in the value of the dollar will help boost exports in coming months. A weaker dollar makes US products less expensive overseas."

Comment: It is good for American exporters to sell products in other nations. Chinese folks love American products and there is the marketing potential to boost exports to China. Americans like to buy Chinese goods for saving money in USA. It is common sense to pay attention to the pocket books for consumers to remember the economic concept to maximize and to optimize the situations with human behavior in action everyday, everywhere in the world.

Joel Naroff, president of Naroff Economic Advisors, wrote in a note to clients. "This was a positive report in that it provides further evidence that both the US and foreign economies are coming back."

Comment: Benjamin Franklin said: "He/She who has a skill has an estate." A marketable skill is sine qua non for getting jobs. I have been teaching economics and the Chinese language by virtue of my background and expertise. I have reason to believe that it is high time for readers to have skills to find a niche in any society. Humility and patience are the virtue to be mastered. We should listen to the folks around us and show respect for their views-which is the essence of the system of democracy ased on mutual tolerance that we are trying to forge. Perkier economy pushes dollar back down the slide

Washington Post, Sept. 10, 2009 page A18: "Huo-yue-de-jing-ji" in Pin Yin system of romanization in Chinese.

A major shift in the dollar's role as a reserve currency is unlikely to happen anytime soon, economists say, citing a dearth of viable alternatives, And China continues to amass dollars and Treasury securities,Marc Chandler, global head of currency strategy at Brown Brothers Harriman said.

Comment: Such view is similar to my past blogs since US Dollar is almost an international currency in doing business for decades.

"There are scenarios that could diminish the dollar's appeal as a reserve currency. The federal government could fail to curb deficit spending. Inflation in the US could spiral out of control. But experts don't believe those scenarios are probable. " Menzie David Chinn, an economist at the University of Wisconsin said.

I agree with such rationale to a point but we need to witness empirical evidence in the months to come.

Cornell economist Roert II. Frank published an article entitled "Cause and Effect" i.e. Etiology as I reasoned in my prior blogs. He has been trying for years to bridge the gap between the classroom and the real world. - his vision of economics is broader and more thought-provoking. Frank used economic principles to explain quirky questions of everyday life. That is exactly what I have had in my mind in watching economics in action such as economic issues of the day especially Sino-American Economics in the headlines.

Prof. Frank cited total spending i.e. aggregate demand that determines output and employment.

Comment: Such explanations of the Keynesian Model with contractionary or expansionary gaps would remain to be seen during the course of economic recovery. However, the lifestyle of the folks can hardly be measured in human behavior. Consumption tax i.e. VAT was mentioned in "Keys for Economic Understanding" published in 1971 and 1976(Keys to Economic Understanding" www.ask.com for reference.

First Solar to install major plant in China/Education

Washington Post, September 9, 2009 page A13: First Solar said it reached a preliminary agreement to install a giant 2 gigawatt solar power plant in China's Inner Mongolia region, a project that would dwarf any existing solar installatin in the world. First Solar chief executive Michael Ahearn said the company would look for sites in China to set up a manufacturing plant.

Hong Kong Phoenix TV reports the common ground of USA and China to stress education:

President Obama and Prime Minister Wen both emphasized education in their announcement to schools since young folks would become leaders with education as an investment in human capital in economics. I have made my investment in studying and teaching from the 20th century to the 21st century from coast to coast in US and in different cities in China with interdisciplinary approach in gaining knowledge plus wisdom hopefully.

My first job is teaching in 1945 and I have been assigned to teach another course on Wu dialect for six weeks starting next Monday September 14, 2009. Teaching is learning twice and learning is healthy for the brain as a form of mental labor to keep me mentally alert. As an octogenarian, I feel blessed to have such an opportunity to teach at www.Dictyon.net with top student who is eager to learn and I am enthusiatic to teach for mutual benefit. Knowledge begets intellectual clout and such pursuit is fulfilling in every respect of human activity. As I make contribution to others, I honor other folk's desires and that puts me back in touch with my own desire of learning. Teaching what I know reminds me that I know something. Such is economic utility or satisfaction, indeed!

Ten playful antics for you to enjoy after Labor Day

The following 10 items may be useful for readers of Sino-American Economics to seek mindful health mindset as human capital in USA and in China.

1. To cuddle a panda bear may be fun but would be subject to attack. Beware of Panda who may be hungry for your fingers or your arm?

2. Clinophobia is a fear of going to bed. But we need to have good sleep to maintain good health. Sleep without a bed would be a person with "Gongfu" in Pin Yin system for extra skills.

3.The zebra fish glows brilliant red under the lights. It is the world's genetically engineered pet. Red color is good luck especially for folks in China.

4. Lisa was an acronym for "local integrated software architecture) It was introduced in 1983 with the name of the daughter of Apple co-founder,Steve Jobs. That apply is not eating apple!

5. If you want to be a gourmet, you put salt on your toothpaste. Try it and you may or may not like such flavor. Hehehahahoho all the way to be a centenarian.

6. The bees have sticky hair due to their use of honeycombs. Concur or demur?

7. The difference between a phrase and a cat is that one has a pause(not paws) at the end of its clause. Moreover, there is a difference between an adjective clause and adjective phrase. But grammar is a hassle for most folks except English majors.

8. The septuagenarian wife asked the husband if he still loves her. He replied,"Why not? Haven't I loved you through six other shades in past six decades?"

9. It would be better to pause in our pursuit of happiness and just be happy NOW with the following words: kind, thoughtful, generous, caring, funny, reliable, resourceful, honest, humble, loyal, and more adjectives to describe your mannerism.

10. Happiness is not material consumption over desire only but intellectual pursuit, spiritual satisfaction, good health with good humor must be added for our daily living with real fun.

Tires from China roll in. President Obama will decide on Sept.17th

Washington Post,Sept. 8, 2009 on pages A1,A12:" Kmart and Wal-Mart,Cooper could see that the Chinese tires were less expensive.

The proposed tariff would apply to Cooper Tire products manufactured in China and brought to the United States.

It could have significant negative impacts causing considerable market disruption and negative impacts on U.S. consumers."

Comment: In all fairness,I am inclined to be on the side of American consumers who wish to save money especially during the financial crisis nowadays provided that the products are less expensive with good quality.

Keynes: "The role of economists and political philsophers-both when they are right or wrong, are more powerful than is commonly understood." I agree with this quotable quote 100%.

Comment: I am a student of economics and philosophy since early 1940s but I do not have any clout. Fukuyama wrote: "The truth is that the mathematization of contemporary academic economics lends spurious precision to a field than is pervaded by questionable premises, over-simplified models and ideological bias.

Sunday, Washington Post on page A18: China makes news these days mostly as a rising power, entwined with US interests on issues ranging from America's debt to Iran's nuclear ambitions. Ambassasor to China Jon Huntsman, Jr. told reporters that President Obama told him to focus on a few big piture issues: Global Economy.

Comment: Global economy means US and China work together to try to resolve early recovery of global economic crisis. That is the issue of issues in the Macro-Economics. Stay informed, stay ahead and stay smart!

President Jimmy Carter published an article on page A19 on the Middle East. His birthday happens to be October 1st, the National Holiday of China. Zhong-Mei: Middle(Kingdom) China and America, the Beautiful

Economics is "Jing-ji" in Pin Yin system of romanization. It is interesting to note that the humorous phonetic equivalents may sound like "yi ke nuo mi" i.e. a small rounded glutinuous rice in Chinese characters. Rice is staple food for folks in China and in USA as well. Such may be the justification to focus on Sino-American Economics in the lighter vein. Morever, the Japanese "Kanji" i.e. the Chinese character to address America for "mi" i.e. Rice to represent America due to the sound of "Mi "for America.

It would be up to the reader to select the Chinese character of "Beauty" or the Japanese version of "Rice" in the Chinese character to describe USA. The choice of yours for fun, indeed!

Thoughts about health: Human weakness of greed!

Health is the concern of all folks: Swine Flu Pandemic as declared by WHO.

Chinese would avoid infection with classical greeting style to convey respect and esteem:

Palm and fingers of one hand wrapped around the fist of the other, both hands shaking up and down to exercise for good health. It is easy to do with fun. Try such ways to maintain good health without contacting germs from others.(sic) However, it is known that leaving the mundane world is a natural reality but to have faith, hope and love apropos of the immortality of the soul.

PEI is now in California for a teaching position? Cf. "Foreign Policy" articles by Pei in July/August issue and a letter to the Editor in September/October 2009 issue for reference.

Pei Min-xin, a professor of politics for anarchy? Such is a joke without reason!

Pei stated that corruption is the glue that keeps the party stuck together. Getting rid of it is not possible as long as they keep this system.

Query with comment: Is the system doing OK? What is the international status of that system as assessed by the United Nations for its achievement to overcome poverty? Is Confucius an advocate of ethics and morality? Is the system interested in teaching Confucianism in other nations? Adam Smith was a professor of moral philosophy and economics. It is known that there are corruptions in other nations as well. Would Pei advocate the destruction of such human frailty in other nations? As long as some folks in some nations misbehave with greed, there are corruptions as per the headlines in the media. That is not untrue!

Lunar Year of the Ox until Feb.14, 2010:Year of the Tiger

Greetings to all. I was born in the Year of the Tiger in 1926. Effective Feb.14, 2010 on Valentine's Day, Lunar Year of the Tiger comes back again. According to the Chinese Zodiac, I will be 84, still an octogenarian striving to be a centenarian in the year 2026.

The sequence puts Rat first(2008) and then ox(cow) in 2009 Tiger in 2010, Hare, 2011 Horse,2012,Ram(sheep) 2013, Monkey in 2014, Rooster 2015,Dog 2016, Boar, Dragon 2017 and Serpent(Snake) in 2018. One can easily go forward or backward every 12 years to learn the zodiac for reference. It is up to the reader to imagine such anecdote. In Pin Yin,"Yishi or 'quwen."

Such imagination works well. I eat like a tiger and those who are born in the year of the Roaster or (chicken) do eat like such fowl plus the habit of rising early as a morning person.

Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao sharing a bit of cultural humor with readers to find out such culture in the East may be applicable to the West. Former President Jimmy Carter was born in the Year of the Rat and he did good works for the poor i.e. feeding the hungry. His birthday is Oct.1st, the national holiday of China. In histor,Carter announced the normalization with China decades ago. Such seredipity may be considered as Sino-American Economics in action for mutual benefit in the 21st century.

Three cases of interest with Pin Yin annotations

1.USAToday, September 2, 2009 page 6A:

Drunken driving cases spike in China for reference in USA:

"Bottoms up" culture i.e. Cheers or Drink a toast: "Gan bei" in Pin Yin system of romanization.

Chinese traditional expression: "Among bosom friends, a thousand cups are too few."

In Pin Yin: " Jiu feng zhi ji qian bei shao." for above statement.

Next line in continuation: "Hua bu tou ji ban ju duo." i.e. When there are conflicts in dialog, even half sentence is too many."

2. The above situation may be modified when I meet superb students at www.Dictyon.net, the gateway to global languages, I would say: "Shuo hua tou ji qian ju shao." i.e. When we have mutual interest in our talks, even one thousand words are not enough!

3. Seven Steps to the Study of Wisdom:

1.The more you read: "Du shu yue duo" in Pin Yin
2.the more you know: "Zhi shi yue duo"
3.the more you know: "Zhi shi yue duo"
4.the smart you grow: "Cai hua zeng zhang"
5. The stronger your voice:"Fa yan qiang jian"
6.Speaking your mind openly:"Yan zhi cheng li"
7.Making your choice wisely:"Xuan ze ming zhi"

The above English and Chinese expressions may be useful for all folks to ponder and reflect for thoughts.

70th anniversay of World War II and other thoughts

I do remember Second World War when I was a high school student at Hautes Etudes near Beijing, China. We were forced to study Japanese language after Pearl Harbor attack in December 1941. I had to leave North China to be back to Shanghai at age 17 for my university education at St. John's University(1943-46) due to the fear of being forced to join the Japanese army during that period. Well, that is history and I do recollect"hui yi wang shi" the sufferings of the war."Zhan zheng de tong ku"

When I think back in decades,I feel like a young student with rejuvenation. In Pin Yin:"Fan lao huan tong" as my state of mind to keep learning to stay cool and stay informed.

Today is September 2nd,I wish the readers will be septuagenarians and then to Octogenarians and eventually to centenarians. Amen!

As an octogenarian retireee, I worked and saved a lifetime but encounters triple setback at present: asset losses, diminished home values and rising costs. I wonder if Congress would explore solutions to the economic hardship that seniors face nowadays!?

Re: Health care issues in the Headlines lately:

In Pin Yin: "Zhong shuo fen yun" i.e. Folks tell their own stories in USA. Plus "Ge shu ji jian" i.e. Each person holds his/her views.

I would recommend for seniors to remember the following in USA or in China as the positive mindset for spirituality i.e. mental health as human capital in Sino-American economics.

"I set my mind to be happy everyday, though the happenings may not be ideal; No matter whatever comes, I am determined to have happy mood with upbeat attitude."

In Pin Yin, "Mei tian wo yu kuai,ye xu bu li xiang; wo jue ding yao you kuai le de xin tai
."

Happiness is not material consumption over desire only, we must add intellectual pursuit, spiritual satisfaction with good health. That is my formula to be shared with all since such publication in Shanghai when I lectured there in 1980s.

Page 10: "Why Asia Wins": K. Mahlubani, Dean, National University of Singapore wrote his letter to the Editor:

"Pei's article makes no effort to explain the remarkable development of Asia especially China"

Comment: Pei Minxing left China in 1980s and he should be aware of the positive development of China with fairness as an associate, working for Council of Foreign Relations.

Mahbubani wrote further that Pei seems to suggest that the US can continue on autopilot and will always remain on top. Pei should read the insightful article by Henry Kissinger published in the Washington Post on Sunday,August 30, 2009. Moreover,Nobel Laureate Joseph Stiglitz also published an analytical article about US and China. Pei is more focused to his own view on politics from his background in China instead of China's recent economic achievement.

Mahbubani's book "The New Asia Hemisphere: The Irresistible Shift of Global Power to the East" should be a good reference for all Asia watchers especially the development in China.

US stock drop after Chinese sell-off:WashPost,Sept.1st

Washington Post, September 1, 2009 on page A8:

China's Shanghai composite index had skyrocketed more than 90% from January through early August, which led some investors to wonder whether the country would help lead the world out of a recessin. But much of that growth seems to have been propelled by massive government lending programs that officials have begun to rein in. Chinese markets have been sliding since early August, and the index plummeted 6.7% on Monday. It is down 2% since August 4, sending China into bear-market territory.

The unease in China weighed on commodities prices in the United States.

"China set the stage for what happened today," said Ned Douthat, vice president of Ockham Research. The two markets are going to be inexorably tied for the foreseeable future."

Such in my rationale in my blogs in the past for Sino-American Economics.
