Now, a clear reading on recovery:WashPost,7/31/09

Washington Post,July 31, 2009 on page A19:

GDP Data will settle whether positive signs elsewhere add up to progress.

Photo: Consumer spending figures are a key part of the GDP report. Consumers account for around two-thirds of total economic activity. Such data are included as a yardstick of economics in action in USA and in China via serendipity.(sic) Coincidence through educated guesstimates at best since 1980s?

Comment: Human behavior is relative to consumer spending. Let us examine the lifestyle, custom and tradition of Americans and Chinese and we can have some kind of inklings for Sino-American Economics in the years ahead in the 21st century.

Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shhao, an observer of economics in action. July 31, 2009

The beginning of a New Day as a new life on earth

The following is dedicated to folks in USA and in China as common ground apropos of Economics of Health, a field of human capital.

"Laotianye" in Pin Yin has given us this day to use as we will. We may waste it or grow in its light and be of service to others. But what we do with this day is important because we have exchanged a day of our life for it. When tomorrow comes, today will be gone forever.

We may face worldly challenge but we claim to be champions when we have our strong will. In the meantime, we engage in our relaxing activities for enjoyment.

We laugh, talk and discover what we have in common. The cheerful upbeat of this fortuitous serendipity exists with our joyful mindset.

It is more blessed to give than to receive. Be generous to offer our best to others as fellow homosapiens in the mundane world.

Success is not to be measured by material possessions but we should crave for intellectual pursuit and spirituality with faith, hope and LOVE.

Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao with thoughts of the start of a beautiful day as aesthetic awakening with devoted gratitude.

US and China are focusing on Asia Pacific

Both US and China are concerned about North Korea and South Korea for Peace and Economic Development:

1. North Korea's missile program suffered another setback with the failure of the Unha 2 space launch vehicle.

2. The launch failure left Pyongyang unable to validate a range of key technologies.

3. The South Korea government has reacted with relief in the failure of North Korea's attempted satellite launch.

4. Seoul is considering acquiring longer-range missiles than it is carrently able to field.

Seoul: International Aerospace and Defense Exhibition 2009: October 20-25, 2009 Seoul Airport

It is only one tri-service exhibition in Korea and the most representative exhibition in Asia-Pacific. Such event is of great interest to USA and China as well.

Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao, a watcher for peace and economic development in Asia Pacific since both US and China are nations on both sides of the Pacific.

Google is popular worldwide and Baidu is popular in China. Now Discovery will team with Baidu to compete with www.Google.com. I like both as a blogger online to spend my time judiciously.

Such is another evidence of Sino-American Economics in action. I am glad to read such news.

Succinct remarks about Economics at the spur of the moment as a senior.

1. The 20th century economics of prosperity would be modified as the result of global financial crisis. However, the arguments, the logic, the predictions and the rhetoric would practically the same.

2.The fundamental changes in the developed nations are different from those in the developing countries by virtue of lifestyles of the folks with customs and tradition as behavioral science.

3.The decline of manufacturing as a provider of wealth in developed countries may be transformed to developing nations by the management due to obvious labor cost for maximizing profit.

4.Political economy would be in evidence with the market push as the integration to optimize the public and private sectors for solid union in terms of efficiency and effectiveness.

5. Economics with the real-world awareness in serving the society would be outstandingly evident in the 21st century. Young population and the new workforce would demand continuing training and retraining via communities as grassroots of economic development. Micro to Macro in nations for globalization.

US-China Chart Economic Effects

Washington Post, July 29, 2009 on page A11:

Secretary of Treasury Tim Geithner called cooperation between the United States and China "vital not only to the well-being of our two nations but also the health of the global economy." Such statement is identical to the blogs in the past to be verified.

The United States and China are the world's two biggest emitters of the heat-trapping gases, and neither joined the Kyoto Protocol, an agreement to reduce emission.

The 21st century focuses the Pacific for USA and China

East Asia is of greatest significance to the United States. Such region may be thousands of miles away but the USA has long had interests as the Near West rather than the European term of the Far East, a misnomer, indeed! Look at the map and we can be reminded that America's day starts at Guam. Needless to say,Hawaii is the paradise of the Pacific of the United States and Alaska may be pronounced as "A la shi jie" in Pin Yin system of romanization i.e. "Our World" in the Wu dialect,Shanghainese as serendipity in humor.(sic)

Economically the U.S. has had interest in trade with that region than with any other parts in the world. Militarily, two of the last three major wars the US has fought were in East Asia, and the nation continues to be heavily involved in fighting terrorism globally for security. Socially and philosophically, increasing immigrants to the United States may be traced to Asia as known in the past decades. Moreover, Asian Americans have made contributions to the USA on record. Such impact is noted by the leaders in America for understanding the global context especially in the fields of finance and economics. Given the rapid ecoomic growth of the world's most populous nation,China,it becomes an important partner as President Obama stated at the Strategic Economic Dialogue.

Deputy Prime Minister Wang delivered speech with humor

Phoenix TV of Hong Kong reports about the Dinner Party at Ritz Carlton Hotel in Washington apropos of the impressive remarks by Deputy PM Wang Qishen of China. He mentioned former Secretary of State Kissinger's contribution for US-China relations and his association with Geithner's father at Ford Foundation in early 1980s when young Tim Geithner was a student of the Chinese language at Beida. I was a schoolmate of Professor Chen Baosen(St.John's University of Shanghai) who was a Fellow at the Institute of American Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Science. Prof. Chen received an award to come to the United States as a Visiting Scholar of the Ford Foundation. Deputy PM Wang is Uncle Wang to be a partner of Uncle Sam.(sic)

Such historical background reminds me of my other experiences:

I published "A Glimpse of the Chinese Language" in 1965 at the RAND Corporation and hinted the desirability for China to be open to the world via Pin Yin system of romanization for understanding on page 8. Available at www.rand.org at PDF format free of charge for public service. In 1964-1965, Dr, Kissinger was a Consultant and I was a member of the research staff of the Department of Economics and taught the Chinese language and did research on China's economy with economist Richard Moorsteen who published "Remaking China Policy" in 1971, Harvard University Press. Dr. Kissinger visited China in 1971 and Nixon visited in 1972.

I lectured economics at Beida and in Shanghai Fudan University in 1981. In 1982, I was a Visiting Consultant of United Nations Development Program(UNDP) in Beijing and Shanghai. And also in 1986-1987 in Beijing and Shanghai. I was a Fulbright Senior Scholar in Hong Kong,1989-1990. I was an American expert in Guangzhou in 1992-93 and in Beijing from 1993-1996.

Deputy PM Wang also called attention to the dinner guests about Expo 2010 in Shanghai and the American Hall will be completed before May 2010 with his invitation to welcome all who would have an opportunity to witness a modern Shanghai as the host of World Exposition.

As a native of Shanghai , I am proud of Shanghai and I am now teaching Wu dialect to Americans who would have an extra dimension of knowing the Shanghainese which is being spoken in Shanghai even though Mandarin is the official language as "Putonghua" the common language of the Chinese folks. I have reason to believe that Americans are interested in the Wu dialect. Shanghainese is being offered at www.dictyon.net in Maryland,USA.

The Closing speech by Deputy of State Dai:Phoenix TV from Hong Kong

The Deputy State Official stated that China's market economy is recognized by the United States and he hopes that reporters in the media would be accurate and positive for such a significant conference affecting peace and global economic issues in the 21st century.

I have expressed my thought about China's market economy from my on-the-spot observation in my past blogs and I am glad to see such endorsement by the U.S. leaders.

Money is not the be-all and end-all; rather it is a vehicle to getting what folks need for necessities in life. Such understanding would be part and parcel to affect consumer behavior in economics.

Glamour and luxury are not essential for happiness. Happiness is not material consumption over desire only as I sent my blogs in the past.

The goal of economic stability is the proper lifestyle for the folks in the USA and in China for the need of ethics and morality to understand the importance of the public interest over the private interest. President Obama cited Mencius and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton quoted Confucius. I did my work on Confucianism with Mencius in particular as my thesis for my graduate degree at Georgetown University in 1950. I sent such work to the White House several weeks ago and am intellectually satisfied to witness such reception by American leaders.

President Obama cited Mencius at the Dialogue

Phoenix TV, Hong Kong on Wednesday morning,July 29, 09 reports President Obama quoted Mencius in his speech to the audience apropos of US-China strategic Economic Dialogue.

I sent my work on Mencius to the White House several weeks ago and I am glad to see such citation to that effect.

Moreover,Secretary of State Hillary Clinton cited Confucius and I have stressed Confucianism as the role model of folks in China and in the US as well re ethics and morality.

FED Chairman Bernanke said about Forecasting

Washington Post, July 27, 09 page A16:

"Economic forecasting makes weather forecasting look like physics," Prof. Bernanke said, offering a caveat before saying that FED leaders forecast that the unemployment rate will top 10% by the end of the year." Joblessness is certainly an issue for the American economy.

Comment: In physics, there is entropy in thermodynamics i.e. the uncertainty of a system. Economist Prof. Galbraith is so right in saying that there are those who don't know and those who don't know they don't know." I concur with Prof. Galbraith and reviewed his book entitled "Almost Everyone's Guide to Econonics" published by Atlantic Economic Journal, September 1979. May be searched online.

In Macroeconomics,John M. Keyes ' Model of the Cross of Aggregate Demand and Aggregate Supply is known with gaps and Obama's economic team honors Keynes. President Nixon said that" we are all Keynesian now" decades ago! In short,Political Economy is the way to go as published in "Keys for Economic Understanding" in 1971. www.Amazon.com for reference.

On the Lighter Side: Humor in USA to be shared with China

1. Age is something that doesn't matter, unless you are a cheese. Most Chinese don't seem to like cheese but age is respected for seasoned maturity. Age is merely a number and a number is a number and a number, indeed!

2. If you are too lazy to start any thing, you may get a reputation for "patience" Patience is a virtue. Procrastination is negative but turns out to be positive in humor.

3. Every dog has his/her day- but the nights are reserved for the cats. Both are pets.

4. Pets are not pests. A slip of "s" would make big difference!

5. A dentist and a manicurist fought tooth and nail. But the jobs call for such efforts.

6. Life begins at 40- but so do fallen arches, rheumatism, faulty eyesight, and the tendency to tell a story to the same person. Note: Life begins at 80 as revised by an octogenarian.

7. Police were called to a day-care center where a 3-year old was resisting a rest.

8. We'll never run out of math teachers because they always multiply. Language teachers are urgently needed because all folks must communicate to one another.

9. He/She who knows that enough is enough will always have enough. It is the mindset.

10. Common sense is the collection of prejudices acquired by age 18. A teenager knows all.

The above good-humored " intellectual delicatessen" is expected to amuse the thinkers hopefully. Moreover, laughter begets longevity looking forward to be centenarians.

Ethos and Lifestyles as the factors for Economics

"Economist" July 24, 2009 issue: The selected passages below for reflections:

Page 12 : Economists and Social scientists, trying to understand the real world.

Comment:The real world of the people such as PRC.

Economics is "Jingji" in Pin Yin. "Jingshijimin" 4 Chinese characters to indicate global concern for the folks on earth.

Page 65: Nobel Laureate Paul Krugman said"We are living through a dark age of macroeconomics in which the wisdom of the ancients has been lost. Perhaps we should remember Adam Smith as a professor of moral philosophy. Confucius/Mencius should be studied as well as ancient sages.

Andrews Lo of MIT suggested cause and effect studies. That mean ETIOLOGY as I sent my prior blogs. He also stated "reconciling adaptive market hypothesis" as LINGONOMICS as the previous blogs as well.

Page 67: "The seismic events of the past two years were a blow to credibility but may prove to be a spur to creativity."

Comment: Economics should be creative thinking, moving with the times re changes and choices of lifestyles and ethocs of the peoples in the world with dynamic stochastic equilibrium.

Are we seeking happiness in life? True or False?

Happiness=Material Consumption+Intellectual Pursuit+Spiritual Satisfaction+Good Health as numerator over Desire as the denominator.

Loving the way we live is the thing to happiness we have found. We have faith, hope and LOVE.

Happiness has taken on such a superficial meaning in our culture that it is often used to mean anything that brings us pleasure. But we have found that true happiness is a QUALITY or the mindset that emerges and matures in the process of human development. It is closely aligned with equanimity i.e. the ability to maintain our balance in the face of even the most trying circumstances.

We love what we do but did not always. It is known that the greatest contributioin we can offer to the world is to live honestly with integrity and to be at peace ourselves.

I have traveled paths to walk
Learned lessons old and new
And now this wisdom of my life
I am blessed to share with YOU.

Let kindness spread like sunshine
Embrace those who are sad
Respect thier dignity, give them joy
And leaving them feeling glad

Forgive those who might hurt you
And though you have your pride
Listen closely to their viewpoint
Try to see the other side.

Walk softly when you are angry
Try not to take offense
Invoke your sense of humor
Laughter has the clout to be on the way to longevity.

Hehahahahoho all the way and we shall live to be centenarians.

Consumer Protection/Health Care: Folks are concerned

Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner supports transferring consumer protection authority from bank regulators to a new agency.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ban S. Bernanke argues that consumer protections are best overseen by the Fed and banking regulators.

Comptroller of the Currency John C. Dugan supports an agency to write financial rules to protect consumers, but says banking regulators should monitor and enforce the standards.

FDIC chairman Sheila C. Bair supports creating an agency to write financial rules to protect consumers, but says banking regulators should oversee sand enforce standards.

Published by the Washington Post, July 25, 2009 on page A12.

I would share their thoughts and would like to witness such leaders with clout to activate their thoughts into action for the best interests of consumers in USA.

In China, leaders are saying the same for folks in China.

My best wishes to thinkers to enpower more clout to ordinary citizens for the wellbeing of all taxpayers in both nations.

shared prosperity." Such distribution of wealth is inline with globalization of humanity.

"Economist" July 17, 2009 issue:Focus,Chief Economist at the World Bank Justin Lin argues the low-income countries need to make small local banks the mainstay(Shou yao zhi cheng" in Pin Yin )of the financial system. I would concur but would add the role of community colleges on the local level to train folks with basic knowledge in Economics. More evidence below:

Delivering China to a waiting world: TraVerus/ChinaClicks2

Historically China's tradition, people and scenic beauty have been largely veiled in seclusion. With the opening up in globalization, China is undergoing a transformation. The mission is to bring the China of ancient times into the future and to a waiting world in the 21st century.

However, language is the means of communication and it would be advisable for Westerners to learn the Chinese language for cultural enrichment in practical needs to travel to China.

"A Glimpse of the Chinese Language"(1965) www.rand.org in PDF format, available free of charge as a public service.

On page 8 , the author encouraged China to join the world in the name of humanity. It was published in 1965 with a vision and such foresight is gaining momentum in the 21st century. Beijing had Olympics in 2008 and Shanghai will be the host of World Expo in 2010.

Three Companies, One Mission:

The Golden Triangle is composed of 5CTV, China Clicks 2, and TraVerus Travel.

China, home to circa 1.5 billion people i.e. 22% of the world's population, is an enormous player in the global market. China's market system is now in clear evidence. China's contribution to recover global financial crisis is in full swing as known to the world.

Science has only scratched the surface of how language affects thought

NEWSWEEK magazine, July 20, 2009 issue on page 31:

A science editor wrote: "Language may shape our thoughts. The effect is powerful enough that private mental lives of speakers of different languages may differ dramatically.

The basic sensory perception and a small plake can have an effect on how people think about things in the world."

The impact and repercussions are too crucial to be ignored. The consequence would imply the crucial decision for peace and economic development. i.e. "You jin yao guan tou de jue ding xing" in Pin Yin system of romanization.

Perception and reception are testimonials to effective communication in every field of endeavor. That is why the study of foreign languages are so critical in the 21st century when USA continues to assume leadership in the world.

US-China relations are the most significant one as perceived by leaders in USA and in China as well.

Chinese characters are ideograms(ideograph) with circa 200 radical index to indicate philology with a taste of ethnology to etiology.

It is important for Chinese folks to study American English in order to be able to understand USA in the 21st century and it is more significant for Americans to study the Chinese language for more effective contacts with the Chinese. A case of point would be the study of the Wu dialect i.e. Shanghainese for World Expo in 2010. An American Hall is being built in Shanghai and is expected to be completed before May 2010.

"A Glimpse of the Chinese Language" is available free of charge at PDF format via www.rand.org for initial exposure in English as a form of art and music for cultural enrichment apropos of the harmony in humanity.

SEQUEL to Longevity to be centenarians with marketable skills

Healthy Attitude Stressing intellectual factors to be discovered if detected.

Happiness is NOT material consumption over Desire only. Intellectual Pursuit,Spiritual Satisfaction and Good Health must be added to the numerator over the denominator of Desire as a proper formula for Genuine Happiness. How to gain happiness in life? Read below with insights: -

It should be known that the subject of aesthetics is worthy of note plus the study of epistemology, cosmology and ontology. Everything is ontologically good as Mencius advocated centuries ago. I remember vividly since 1940s and I still keep such aphorism in my mind everyday. Try my recommendation and you will love to be alive with sound mindset. Mental health is an area that is often only whispered about if not completely ignored, but it is gaining advocates lately as per the increasing cases. Global economic recession maybe one of the causes with the study of etiology for understanding.

Folks may transform pain into poetry: thinking about lifetime journeys from confusion to discovery, from spiritual valleys to mountaintops, and, as we may explore from pain to empowerment. via the study of philosophy, the ultimate subject matter for all folks.
Poetry is a part of that stability on personal level. My parents expected me to be a poet with heroic deeds i.e. "Shihao "in Pin Yin system of romanization) I strive to be a lifelong student of languages and philosophy i.e. American English, Chinese Mandarin and Wu dialect plus philosophy in economics.

Consumer Behavior in USA and in China for research

Good Morning to YOU, I have reason to believe that lifestyles of Americans in USA and Chinese in China are noticeably different. China's farmers occupy circa +- 70% of the entire population and their ways are not the same as average Americans. Such disparity would affect the economy.

If we are researchers of behavioral economics,we must study Chinese culture which influences the habits of folks in China as traditional value. Morever, research in the original Chinese language would be the primary source of understanding behavior of folks in China.

The Fulbright program requires good command of the Chinese language for China Studies such as native fluency with a university degree from China or graduate studies in the Chinese language. That is certainly warranted in my judgment as a former researcher at the RAND Corporation,Santa Monica,California with publication of "A Glimpse of the Chinese Language" Available at www.rand.org for PDF format free of charge as a public service.

It is good to read such news again in the Washington Post today apropos of the role of community colleges for economic recovery as I sent my e-mail to the White House several weeks ago.

I heard on the radio that President Obama is in Michigan lecturing about the community college as I published my article entitled "The Future of Community Colleges" in The Congressional Record,July 18, 1974 in the 20th century with a vision about the needs in the 21st century.

Any assumption is subject to changes and tidbits

Robert Samuelson published his article in the Washington Post,July 13, 2009 on page A17:

"We face the consequences of much bigger government. Certainly higher taxes for future Americans. Probably a less robust economy. The Congressional Budget Office notes that elevated deficits would penalize saving, investment and income, while unprecedented tax burdens could slow the growth of the economy making the spending burden harder to bear."

We shall witness the empirical evidence in the years to come apropos of the real economy regardless of Lingonomics.

That is Samuelson's assumption with his negative scenario. I would be more optimistic when there is the trust of faith, hope and charity for the Obama administration.

President Obama writes on the role of community colleges

Washington Post,Sunday, July 12, 2009 on page A17:

"We believe it's time to reform our community colleges so that they provide Americans of all ages a chance to learn the skills and knowledge necessary to compete for the jobs of the future. It is estimated that we meet the goal of graduating 5 million more Americans from community colleges by 2020." Such passage can be read in President Obama's published article.

I sent my letter to the White House with such rationale several weeks ago and I am delighted to read such endorsement of my vision of "The Future of Community Colleges" published by the Congressional Record, July 18, 1974 issue.

Book World: "Shanghai Girls" is published by Random House 314 pp. $25

Lisa See, the author, might be the daughter , granddaughter and great-grand-daughter of Caucasian women, but the Chinese great-grandfather who arrived in California in 1871 has proved the most influential of her ancestors. "I am Chinese in my heart,"See wrote in her family memoir, "On Gold Mountain."

San Francisco's Chinese name is "Old Gold Mountain" since I came to San Francisco from Shanghai in 1947 as a graduate student from Shanghai at the University of San Francisco.

"We raised our children to be Americans, but what we wanted were proper Chinese sons and daughters."

Comment: The proper Chinese offspring would imply the influence of traditional Chinese culture of Confucianism to respect the ancestors in China with filial piety of the family. To be Americans would mean to respect the law and order in USA. Such is the implication of the best of two nations. I envision the cooperation and collaboration of USA and China in the 21st century for mutual benefit in every field of endeavor in the nuclear age.

China's 20th century upheavals afford as much color as its days of old;"Shanghai Girls" will not lose See any fans, and it bravely moved her oeuvre( i.e. the work of a writer as a whole in French) into the challenging terrain of more recent history.

Lawrence Summers' judgment with comments

Lawrence H. Summers, director of the White House's National Economic Council said several days ago that unemployment and job loss have been greater than expected, given the level of GDP in the first two quarters of the year. In other words, the rate of economic contraction so far this year tracks with the administration's projections, but job losses nonetheless have been higher.

Comment: Keynesian Cross Model assumes the lines of Aggregate Demand and Aggregate Supply curves intersecting with the contractionary or expansionary gaps via C+I+G+F of changing levels from varied sectors. The wars are still going on in the G sector plus stimulus delivery and C sector(for consumers) and I sector(business investments) are moving at a slow pace. Nobody can be sure of the upcoming state of the economy on the basis of GDP but educated guesstimates with professional judgment may provide the directions of the moving economy. Readers online may provide views about such macro outlook of the economy.

Sequel to Humanity:All Cultures have some values in common

The concepts of values must be more or less universal. That is the goal of leaders to lead the peoples with trust in perception and reception.

Imagine what it would be like for a society to show no value on truth. When a person talks to another, there would be no presumption that he/she is telling the truth - for he/she could be speaking falsely. Within that society, there would be no reason to pay attention to what anyone says. However, there is also an assumption that he/she tells the truth in a decent society. Needless to say, the reception would be positive as well.

Communication in a good society should be truthful even though there may be exceptions to the general rule. Silence may be golden but there is no impression without expression.

Americans are known to be trusting and truthful and I have reason to believe that folks in China are the same as good folks. There should be goodwill among good people with some exceptions under certain circumstances as we have known via media stories nowadays such as greed and dishonest practices. Let us grin and bear it but justice will be the final outcome.

Training in ethics and morality would be leading to good citizenship and courses are being offered to business students. Such professional education in philosophy is essential for good value in the 21st century to resolve financial crisis in the global context to avoid deceitful scheme.

World Economic System and Social Responsibility

Washington Post, July 8, 2009 Page A6:

Pope( the religious leader of the West and the East) criticizes world economic system, urges social responsibility. It is Socio-Economics in evidence. President Obama, the political leader of the West, will visit the Pope on Friday, July 10, 2009 as scheduled. They have some common ground in re wealth distribution with ethics and morality. Moreover,Pope advocates the creation of a world political authority to manage the economy i.e. Political Economy as I sent my previous blogs. Such is cited in "Keys for Economic Understanding." www.ask.com.

Adam Smith (of the West) was a professor of moral philosophy and Confucius/Mencius(of the East) stressed morality and ethics as well. The East and the West can be integrated on the same globe with deep reflections for further research.

"The primary capital to be safeguarded is people, Pope says, adding that economic systems need to be guided by charity and truth." It is known that human capital is to be utilized world-wide regardless of race, color or creed for the love of humanity as homosapiens.

COMICS on page C8: Family Circus Bil Keane A small kid says to his mother:

"Mr. Coverly didn't want any animal crackers. He says he's a vegetarian." A chuckle?

It is incorrect perception and reception. However, such mistakes may be relevant to the thoughts of folks talking about the economy. If truth is multi-dimensional as the nature of economics, how can anyone know the truth ? It is common sense that all folks make mistakes.

Economics covers everything under the sun and the moon. Would anyone be able to know everything? Not really. The reader is correct to be alert to the domain("fanwei or lingyu" in Pin Yin) of epistemology and etiology.

That is more than China's total economic output.

Comment: Such statement appears to be impressive for the US economy but China is the creditor nation holding US government securities with faith in the United States. The lifestyles of the folks in US and in China are certainly different and the future of Sino-American Economics may be envisioned via the human behavior of the Confucian Chinese tradition. Sequel of my previous blogs July 6 and July 5, 09

Washington Post, July 6, 2009 on page A5:" Paul Krugman has argued for more public spending" Cf." Economics in the Public Interest" by Richard T. Gill of Harvard University in 1980.4th Edition with citation of the same rationale. Cf."Keys for Economic Understanding" and blogs in the past for the same reasoning. Comparisons are the best bet for learning processes.

On page A15: Robert J. Samuelson wrote:"Economists Out to Lunch" in the light vein.

Niall Ferguson is a respected scholar who is also a successful popularizer. He is British and has taught at Oxford and New York University and is now at Harvard.

"Economists tend to focus directly on the spending of consumers, businesses and government." I sent my blog with C+I+G+F as Aggregate Demand in Macroeconomics for reader's reference.

The mathematical models are departing radically from reality that the conclusions become useless. I sent the same thought in my blog dated July 5, 2009.

His conclusion: Markets became more complex; more money crossed national borders; people became complacent. History moved on, but economists didn't." We are living in the age of electronics with high tech. but human beings are still human with frailties.

I would envision Philosophy to be the ultimate goal for seeking the answers apropos of human behavior to economics. Moreover,Ph.D. is Doctor of Philosophy in most disciplines. The thoughts of Adam Smith and Confucius/Mencius may be the Model from empirical evidence of China's economic achievement in the 21st century.

Confucianism is a philosophy than a religion. "Rujia Sixiang" in Pin Yin for "Boxue de Kongfuzi" i.e. The Erudite Confucian School of Thoughts. "Boxue " in Pin Yin means a scholar with comprehensive knowledge ="Boshi" in Pin Yin is equivalent to a holder of a doctorate.

The glorification of Confucius began after his death. Mencius (372-289 BC), or Menzi in Pin Yin,helped raise Confucian ideals into the national consciousness with the publication of "The Book of Mencius." Search "Philosophy of Mencius"(1950) at www.loc.gov Library of Congress online catalog for reference.

Eventually, Confucian philosophy permeated every level of Chinese society including spoken proverbs trickled down to the folks in China even to Korea,Japan that I visited in 1980s and in Singapore,Malaysia and Thailand in 1990s. The languages are different but the ideas and ideals of ethics and morality are the same to be the universal value for leaders to pursue the economic goal for a good society.

Needless to say,"Dao de Jing" by Laozi to show The Way & Its Power. Zhuangzi, who lived between 399 BC and 295 BC picked up where Laozi left off. The Book of Zhuanzi is still required reading for anyone trying to make sense of Daoism. Both Laozi and Zhuangzi are philosophers that I studied in the university in China in early 1940s.

Paul Krugman is seeking an innovative theory or model to solve economic problems. Perhaps it is high time to introduce Confucianism in terms of trying to resolve global economic crisis via the philosophy of Chinese moral leaders to serve the best interest of a society instead of personal gains and greed of some as known in the headlines.

Centenarians used to be rarer than hen's teeth, now the age of 100 may have become the new three score and ten.

Such is derived from Lincoln's address with "Four score and seven years ago..." as the source.

Nobel Laureate in Economics, Paul Krugman wrote his conclusion in his book to respect Keynesian Cross. We do see streets in USA and China with such cross as an evidence of economic theory in action. Output is the function of Technological Progress, Capital Formation and Labor Force Development. I am inclined to stress L for labor force development i.e. Education and Training for enhancing productivity. My reasoning rests here for reader's comments.

The above rationale would be applicable to US economy and China's economy as well in my humble opinion.

USAToday, July 2-5, 2009: July 4th Thoughts

Thoughts on Independence Day, July 4th: Several letters to the Editor: Page 10A:

Warren Paulins of Ohio wrote:

"We must cooperate in sincere efforts to fix our broken health care system, upgrade the educational systgem, rewrite an outdated and confusing tax code and work harder to eliminate class hatred and prejudice."

A typical case in Maryland in the 20th centuary(1983-1984): Two Americans of Chinese ancestry (with tenures) had to leave the same college after 17 and 18 years of teaching. One was forced to resign and the other was terminated on the basis of numerical rating from the authorities. (Revised the rules for faculty with tenure as the so-called basis)

Such discrimination is obvious to observers but it is difficult to fight the administration with bias during that period.

Matthew Obligschlager in Kentucky wrote:

"We're starting to lean toward policies that perpetuate a redistribution of resources (or socialism) America will not remain a beacon to the world if we keep on this path. The beauty of the American dream cannot be allowed to fade." My Comment: America has two sectors: the federal government(public sector) comes to rescue when the private sector is in trouble but NOT Socialism per se. It is Socio-Economics. Economics is designed to serve the society)

It is known that President Obama has multicultural heritage and his cabinet members are Americans of varied ethnic background to represent USA as the melting pot of all races. It is the ideal goal to utilize the expertise of all the talents regardless of race, color or creed.

As a Kentucky Colonel doing eleemosynary work, I agree with Matthew Obligschlager that more equitable distribution of income and wealth would be in the best interest of the nation. The middle class is the backbone of any nation for peace and economic development. The majority of the people belong to the middle class as ordinary folks. China's official name is People's Republic of China and the middle class is expanding in China. US Constitution starts with "We,the People" There is the common goal for Sino-American Economics as I would envision.

U.S. Confirms Participation in Shanghai Expo

Washington Post, July 2, 2009 on page A9:

The United States confirmed that it will take part in next year's World Expo in Shanghai, saying it wants to showcase U.S. technology and values in a bid to boost ties with China.

As an American citizen of Chinese ancestry and a native of Shanghai, I welcome such cooperative effort to strengthen friendship of two nations on both sides of the Pacific for the wellbeing of humanity. I believe any exchange of technology would benefit humankind in the 21st century.

Page A12: World Bank Reports Record Year of Aid. Bank President Robert B. Zoellick has good insights about China to be a stakeholder in global finance.

Gold Research Findings may be as follows:

1. Gold predicted to go from $940+ to $1,000+ an oz in the months to come.

2. CD's are not attractive but insured.

3. Stock market maybe very shaky.

4. Global war on terror would cause financial and economic fluctuations.

5. Government Bailouts and Inflation may affect consumers' confidence.

6.Circa 11.2 trillion National Debt that grows at a rate of 2 billion a day in the general estimate.

In short, folks would like to invest in precious metals or other tangible valuables instead of papers without intrinsic substance but confidence only.

Hong Kong Phoenix TV media experts reported the forum of the future of Hong Kong and Shanghai to be the financial center of the world. Both have competitive edges in varied ways. How soon? That remains to be seen with evidence in the decades to come.

However,we must have faith, hope and love for global financial recovery during the course of time. Have patience apropos of the governments in the world with economic clouts.

TIME magazine, July 6, 2009 issue. Economics deals with human behavior

Page 18: Chicago economist Gary Becker said: "When you give a lot of discretion to regulators, they don't use the tools that are given to them." What are the tools? Human behavior can never be measured for clarity.

Milton Friedman thought that instead of tweaking interest rates, the FED should just automatically increase the money supply 3% to 4% a year. Money supply is a function and Money stock should be coordinated with credit system. See an article on " Monetary Policy Revisited" published by Atlantic Economic Journal for reference.

Stanford economist John Taylor concocted i.e."Tiao he" in Pin Yin system of romanization. There are three elements such as inflation, current economic growth and long-term trend growth to be churned out as a suggested FED interest rate target. Such approach can hardly be possible with accuracy.

It is to to be known that Economics is a behavioral science and the lifestyle of the people should be taken into consideration plus the lifelong educational endeavor to be stressed as guidelines.

All the assumptions are to be validated by empirical evidence during the course of time but there is always a time lag. This sounds outlandish but it is very true. That is the nature of economics.

Carktke ib $1 Billion Asia Fund and Community Colleges

Washington Post, July 1, 2009 page A17:

The new fund will concentrate on high-growth private firms in emerging markets such as China... Carlyle has $84.5 billion of assets under management. It invests in buyouts, growth capital, real estate and leveraged finance around the world.

Community Colleges see demand as the Headline in the METRO section:

"The Future of Community Colleges" published by the Congressional Record,July 18, 1974 with a vision for the 21st century from the 20th century publication.

The Obama administration is promising to help 1,200+ community colleges, which educate about 12 million students, or 44% of all undergraduates, including the majority of blacks and Hispanics, and Asians. White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel recently said that the administration was working on a plan that would allow as many as 5 million more students or laid-off workers to attend the schools, which are at the fore of retraining efforts.

Editorial: "Teachers are the single most critical factor in improving student achievement, it is time to start drawing distinctions in how they are retained, promoted and rewarded."

As a teacher since 1945, I fully support such rationale as a former Fulbright Senior Scholar in Hong Kong,1989-1990. I shall continue my efforts to teach students who have achieved distinction with their talents at www.Dictyon.net,the gateway to global languages.

Moreover, the following works are dedicated to stress the role of community colleges:

1. Keys for Economic Understanding(1971) www.Amazon.com book catalog. The theme is to emphasize training and retraining.
2. Keys to Economic Understanding(1976) www.ask.com for reference.
3. Work and Study Cycle Theory (1978) to be validated and implemented in the USA or China to enhance productivity for economic development.

Roosevelt pins the Medal of Honor on Doolittle's uniform at a White House ceremony.(Photo) Many American Air Force folks went back to China recently to recollect fond memories six decades ago as I saw on TV. I was a student at St.John's University in Shanghai and witnessed B52 during the period of 1945-46. Such scene is still vivid in my mind now.

Shanghai will be the host of World Expo in 2010 to welcome all visitors to see the changing China especially in Shanghai with international investments as evidence.
