The Problem of a globalized capitalism

Richard Hill is a Senior Lecturer at Southern Cross University,NSW,Australia:
"100 million people face the prospect of hunger and extreme poverty in addition to the 860 millioni who already go to bed each night undernourished. Despite all the posturing of Western governments, international financial institutions, and the odd rock star, it is the world's poor who continue to bear the brunt of the food crises.
His conclusion:"As we saw in the 1970s, the global economy cannot withstand that sort of energy inflation. This is a major reason why those ahead of the curve on sustainability are putting their energies into community gardens and local food systems. My comment: The developed nations should leave no stone unturned to assist the developing nations. Francis Shieh a.k.a. Public Service Jobs in China and in USA

It is known that public service jobs are very much encouraged in China under the system. But the USA is catching up with the needs of graduates in the public sector.

New York Times,June 29, 2008 Week in Review page 9:
Both Harvard and Princeton have focused on graduates to consider low-paying public service jobs. As I have detected from my past experience, some have great ideals to serve the nation for public interest but the majority would be interested in the private sector for their careers. Now, the US economy is going weaker and the graduates have to find a way to making a living either in the public or in the private sector. Such case may be the same in China. Well, money makes the graduates go,indeed! Folks have to make a living by having a marketable skill. I taught Economics and the Chinese languages,Mandarin and Wu dialect(Shanghai) for the past decades to earn my living in the public and private sectors as I have noted as a lifelong student of economics.

Writing is one antidote to a simplistic approarch to life. It is most human, humanistic and humanizing of activities. Ideas may rule the underpinnings of our digital civilization. Socrates can still infuse its upper reaches, never tired of poking holes in assumptions by asking questions and noticing distinctions. That is my teaching approach as well.

Metz sees unprecedented conditions that have left consumers with stagnant incomes, massive debt and shrinking home values. I agree with such assessment. Downward spirals with upward attitude for joy

Washington Post,June 27,2008 page D1: bank failures, hedge fund meltdowns and 6% unemployment..heading toward recession... We should have sense of humor to learn from Mark Twain a.k.a. Love relationships possess, enliven, delight, exalt, and transport. Poor economy induces crimes. We are all consumers in USA and in China

As any society becomes more affluent, it is difficult to keep the consumer behaving in a price competitive manner. Now that Chinese consumers are richer, they do not appear to take as much time to stretch their money further. They are not price conscious. However, the American consumers try to change the lifestyles as reported in the media nowadays due to higher costs of fuel and food. The rich folks in China would lead to impulse buying, which presumably means that retailers can sell commodities at higher prices than they would otherwise. Such spending would affect the level of aggregate demand in the consumption sector of GDP. When the rate of growth is not reduced, inflation icreases. If supply and demand increase at the same time and at the same rate, inflation would be curbed in the long run. Such is a dream in the thought of academic community. It would be probable or improbable - i.e. getting consumers to shop more judiciously would lead to a reduction in prices.(sic)
If responses are to be elicited from thoughtful readers of this blog, varied scenarios may be scintillating. I rest my blog here.

Labor Market Common Ground for USA/China

Addenda to the previous blog: The ever evolutionary developments within the labor market attributable to foreign languages have given rise to new trends that merit investigation. Various foreign languages can only be derived from research and innovation i.e. idiolect and nuance.

The major elements of innovation are information, research, training and retraining. Continuous training coupled with productive efforts would lead to new methods and applications. Training research, therefore, is an imperative for professional development.

Clearly, it is the responsibility of the public and private sectors to promote and improve training and to provide the means of ensuring that the cost of training is cost beneficial for all concerned especially in foreign languages. www.Dictyon.net for reference.

Common Ground in USA/China: Work -Study Cycle

Work-Study is a good initiative: As a former economist with U.S. Department of Labor,I wish to state categorically that labor should be viewed as a kind of human capital resulting from a combination of formal education, work experience in the specific field and lifelong self-study. I have been involved in such pursuits in USA for decades. Such progress may be viewed as a process of learning through experience with added expertise in educational and professional output. Cf."Work and Study Cycle Theory" www.ask.com for reference. In the United States, on the job training (OJT) has been popular in governmental, academic, industrial and business institutions with extra dimension for economic benefit. I believe such practice would be beneficial to China as well especially the Apprenticeship Programs for training the workers on both sides of the Pacific, the USA and China. Cf." Keys for Economic Understanding" www.Amazon.com online book catalog.

Happiness Paradox: seems contrary yet is true!

Washington Post, June 23, 2008 page A2: Economist Richard A. Easterlin at the University of Southern California noticed the paradoxical disconnect between a nation's ecoomic growth and growth of its happiness. I lectured in Shanghai about Happiness is not material consumption over desire only but intellectual pursuit, spiritual satisfaction plus good health must be added to the numerator over the Desire as the denominator for the Equation of Happiness as I sent my previous blogs to the same effect. "Economics, like math, is something most folks rationalized they would never neeed to know after graduation." Published by the Book World,June 15,m 2008 oage 11. "The Modern Rules of Personal Finance" By Susan Berson

The author is a former senior trial attorney with the US Department of Justice. Published by American Bar Association in 2008. Available in Borders Bookstore.

Money impacts every corner of our lives and dictates the way we live today and how we'll be able to live tomorrow. The book is dedicated to those who are prosperous in spirit i.e. "Jingshenwenming in Pin Yin. "Qingniyixiao!"

Most Americans either feel smothered by loans and credit card debt, or euphoric at being flush with cash from a paycheck, preparing to engage in mass consumerism and purchased the accouterments of wealth from their hourly compensation. Such idea maybe unwise in my way of thinking.

Common to everyone is the oft-quoted axiom "people don't plan to fail, they fail to plan." That is true to financial success. I plan everyday for my intellectual pursuit with money for essentials as needed.

How to manage what I can control: money. Effective money management is the tool that is going to help me find the means to achieve my dream. My companion would be my advisor in the short run and in the long run. My ideal companion would be an understanding person deserving a comfortable life but not seeking luxurious living that may be meaningless if we are pursuing our "jingshenwenming" as well in this world. "Predictably Irrational" by Dan Ariely & Energy problem

HarperCollins Publishers $25.95 for "Predictably Irrational" endorsed by Nobel laureates in Economics.

Dan Ariely is Professor of Behavioral Economics at MIT.(Not Made In Taiwan!)

Page 109: "The problem of Procrastination and Self-Control: Onto the American scene, populated by big homes, big cars, and big screen plasma TV, comes another big phenomenon: the biggest decline in the personal saving rate since the Great Depression. Go back 25 years, and double digit savings rates were the norm. In 1994, the saving rate was 5% but by 2006 saving rate fell below zero to negative 1%. Americans were not only not savings; they were spending more than they earned. Europeans save an average of 20%. Japan's rate is 25%. China is 50%. So what's up with America? Happenings for profound thoughts!

Americans have succumbed to rampant consumerism.

Page 110: The average American familiy has 6 credit cards. In 2005, 6 billion direct-mail solicitations for credit cards. Frighteningly, the average family debt is about $9,000 and 7 in 10 households borrow on credit cards to cover basic living expenses as food, utilities, and clothing."

My comment: Can Americans learn to save? American lifestyle is to enjoy now and pay later. I remember in the textbook by Prof. Samuelson of MIT: Happiness is material consumption over desire. In my previous blog,I would add intellectual pursuits and spiritual satisfaction with good health in the numerator over the Desire as Denominator in the Equation for Happiness. Such thoughts may be found in Confucianism but Asian philosophy is not taught in USA. However,it is being taught in China nowadays. Impacts are seen in the media if noticed.

Addenda: Pete Morton,Economist at Wilderness Society wrote: " The oil and gas industry has 44 million acres of public land under lease, mostly in Colorado,Montana, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming, but only 14 million acres are in production. Domestic drilling opportunities are not scare, and additonal leasing has little marginal value for lowering energy prices for consumers.
The US has only 3% of the world's oil, but we consume 24% of the global supply. If we rapidly consume our dwindling supply, we leave future generations in dire straits. Rather than drilling more, we should be investing in energy conservation and efficiency, more fiscal discipline, and more government oversight of energy markets. Demand-side management, strengthening the dollar, and reducing market speculation and manipulation will lower energy prices more efficiently than leasing our widelife refuges and national parks at the expense of future generations. Published by the Washington Post,June 14, 2008 page A14. Such views may be found in Confucianism et passim.

Economist Joseph Stiglitz on Bolivia's leader

In a time of skyrocketing commodity prices, Morales,48,earned the ire of the oil companies and the envy of other Presidents in the region by renegotiating outdated energy contracts to earn more money for the country's coffers - a portion of which he put toward increased health care and social spending. He is in favor of a low key manner that includes an appreciation of simple food and a taste for wearing his favorite old sweaters. Bolivia's elites hate his populist rhetoric and close ties to Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez but Morales remains popular with his people.

Sino-US-Common Ground; Inflation and earthquake

Washington Post,June 11, 2008 page D4: China moves to raise bank reserve ratios for tightening credit to lead to declines in stock market and in Asia as well. The objective is to try to fight inflation. Higher food prices have been the main culprit plus energy and other commodity costs have surged in China. We know that energy, food and other costs are going up in USA as well. But would monetary policy succeed? That remains to be seen! Chinese and Americans are suffering for high costs of food and energy with common ground of concern for Sino-American Economics.

Global Times in Beijing re Obama published in WashPost,6/10/08 A23.

The Chinese characters of breaking American rules i.e."Guiju" in Pin Yin is not appropriate as published by the Global Times newspaper in Beijing on Barrack Obama's nomination victory and appeared in the Washington Post,June 10, 2008 on page A23. It is my opinion that the Chinese characters should be "chuantong" i.e. tradition to be the first African American in history with victory for nomination by the Democratic Party. I have reason to believe that folks with the knowledge of Chinese language would agree with me in this instance. However, editors have their own idiolect and nuance.(sic) I have also noticed that the diction "cuoci" in Pin YIn apropos of the variations of the British English and American English.

In reference to the first paragraph: "Will Americans vote for a black man?" Yes, Americans will vote for a black man." the writer so stated.

In my line of reasoning as a graduate student from China in 1947,I have learned that Americans must honor our Constitution and any racial bias should be eliminated in the 21st century since White Americans will be a minority in the years to come and we should realize and recognize multi-racial and multi-cultural or interracial and intercultural heritage in USA for fair and just nation for all Americans regardless of race, color or national origin.

Senator Obama stressed the ideal America in his campaign speeches and I wish him well to lead the nation for justice and fairness if or when he is elected as the President in November 2008 to change and to break the tradition to honor all Americans after January 2009. OECD foresees weak growth for 30 members

The weak growth is applied to USA, Japan and several European countries as the report was released in Paris.

Such economic growth will slow to 1.8% this year and 1.7% next year. China's growth is expected to be 8%. Panda with Kungfu. Should be Gongfu in Pin Yin

Style section,Washington Post,Page C1,C4:

Jack Black's Po is a lovably hapless martial artist who is whipped into shape by Dustin Hoffman's determined Master Shifu in a lively animated comedy. Shifu is a title of honor to be addressed to a skilled labor in China. It is a popular way of talking to a stranger initially as the similar expression of "excuse me. May I ask..."

Kungfu is the Wade-Giles system of romanization. In Pin Yin,"Gongfu" means a masterful skill for kicks to resist any abusive onslaught. It may mean innate or acquired strength with physical and mental clout.

After the establishment of PRC in 1949,skilled workers are honored with the title of "Shifu" as a teacher with skills. Shifu is a master worker to be an overseer with disciples as "tudi." Apprenticeship Program is popular for learning a marketable skill in the USA due to the great demand. Such program may be promoted more professionally in China to respect the skilled labor.

"Keys for Economic Understanding"(1971) (www.ask.com) is dedicated to the skilled workers under apprenticeship program being promoted under Clinton administration in 1995. Such useful program should be rekindled in the 21st century as per the market demand as I would envision.

Investors in US and in China to grow portfolio thru metals...

Metals:

Gold is the most coveted metal for all folks in the world apropos of jewelry or dental usage et al. Silver, like gold, is another valued metal with monetary application in China since ancient times. Both are good assets for hedging against inflation since inflation is expected in the USA and in China for short-term or long terms as US Dollar is losing the value as confirmed by the statement by FED Chairman on June 3, 2008. Moreover, gold is for asset preservation during times of global turmoil as we are witnessing now.

Copper is the metal of choice for industrial uses. It is known that a penny is worth more than one cent due to intrinsic value of the copper. I hold penny coins as a collector for historical heritage as well.

Agricultural products:

Coffee: Folks love a good cup of coffee, and prices are going up for Starbucks for $4 in USA and comparable exchange of RMB28 Yuan in China when I was in Nanjing and Shanghai in February 2008.
Cocoa: It is used to make chocolate and chocolate is well liked by folks for health and enjoyment in USA and in China as well.
Oranges: Grown in China and was called "China Apple" in history and shipped to Europe and then to America for the Sunkist brand in California. Brazil is a producer or oranges and other fruits as I visited relatives in San Paulo in 1997.
Soybeans is noted in China and recently discovered as health food in USA as I have observed during the past years.
Cattle and hogs i.e. beef and porks for proteins as regular meat dishes in USA and in China.
Fishery is well known business in China with popular seafood in USA and China. Folks have to eat to live with agricultural products for variety of tastes.

China's Telecom shake-up advances with mergers

Washington Post,June 3,2008 on page D8: The moves were expected as part of a government-mandated shake-up of China's telecommunications sector and called for six telecom firms to combine into three groups in a bid to create a more competitive industry and prevent a dominant operator from monopolizing the market.

At the Congressional hearing today,it is reported that speculation made gas price up about 25% but there is no law against such speculation. Well,American motorists have to pay more and more...in a free society.(sic) Free to make more profits at the expense of ordinary Americans. CEOs go overseas for making more profits as well. No American laws can be applied to international businesses in the name of globalization in the 21st century.

Competition is the essence and substance in economics in USA and in China. Let us watch the developments in the days to come for competition.

China is doing rapidly and dramatically in the 21st century and is going to play an important role in global economics in the days to come.

The following works are to be noted for readers to be aware of the tremendous impact of China's part in globalization.

1. "The End of Poverty" by Jeffry Sachs.
2. "China, Inc." by Ted Fishman.
3. "The World is Flat" by Thomas Friedman.

Elasticity is significant in the economic concept because it determines the effects of price on supply and demand. It is published in media lately that some Americans go overseas for surgery due to low cost of hospitalization and MD's charges.

Some goods are essential to consumers and are inelastic to human esistence per se.

Gas is a necessity in USA to go to work, school, run errants, but bikes may replace cars as the mode of transportation in China. It is obvious that the lifestyles do vary in USA and in China.

When I came to the University of San Francisco in 1947 as an alumnus of St. John's University in Shanghai,I happened to read Insight Guides of SHANGHAI citing my alma mater on page 190. Alumni of St. John's University occupied the highest echelons in China such as the former President Mr. Yan in Taiwan and the former Vice President Ron in China. That is why the nickname of St. John's University is Harvard of China. It is interestng to note that it was the only university in China that all lectures for all courses were given in English under the tradition of rules and regulations of an American university. My diploma was printed in English as well and I still keep the copy of my diploma in English as a token of remembrance in the first part of the 20th century.

When I was in San Francisco in 1947-48,I learned the gold rush with names of John Sutter and James Marshall plus Sam Brannan. Moreover,I discovered "Chop Suey" (i.e. Za-sui in Pin Yin meaning mixed broken pieces) to name such Chinese food but it is the hodge podge(mess) during the gold rush: the hungry workers went to a Chinese restaurant, and the cook served all the mixed food but the workers named "chop Suey" as they only knew for the name of Chinese food. How pitiful,(kelian)naive(tianzhen) and interesting(youxingqu)! That is the history, however.

Young folks in USA and in China share similar interests

Washington Post,June 2, 2008 page B2:

A student speaker at the commencement:"For years, people our age have been typecast as apathetic, selfish, close-minded and lacking a social conscience. Now,I am humbled and amazed at the sheer number of my phenomenally qualified peers forging lucrative careers to go into the Peace Corps or Teach for America. Our social conscience is alive, and it is pulsing.

In China, under the socio-economic market system with the disaster of earthquake, college students are willing to go to Sichuan as volunteers with social conscience as well under China's Socialism with Chinese characteristics.(i.e. private interests are encouraged but public interests are promoted)

Fareed Zakaria is the author: The US has the strength and dynamism to continue shaping the world but only if it can overcome its political dysfunction and reorient US policy for a world defined by the rise of other powers.(such as China and India)
Page 29: The decrease in personal savings as the Harvard economist Richard Cooper has noted, has been largely offset by an increase in corporate savings. (Cooper was my colleague at the RAND corporation,Santa Monica,California in 1964-65.)
The US investment picture also looks much rosier IF education and RD spending are considered along with spending on physical capital and housing.(I would concur apropos of education and training as elabored in "Keys for Economic Understanding."
Americans are borrowing 80% of the world's surplus savings and using it for consumption. Americans are losing interest in the basics: more manufacturing, hard work, savings and becoming a society that specializes in consumption and leisure.
Such insights are truly relevant but work should be more important than fishing!

Taiwan's New President,a Harvard-educated lawyer

Cross-strait relations are bound to be harmonious for mutual benefits. President Ma sets out his stall for buying and selling to China. President Ma pleased China by stressing the common heritage i.e. language and culture, shared by people on both sides of the strait. Ma distanced himself from former leader Chen's confrontational policy towards the mainland. It is known that ethnic Chinese are Chinese regardless of their residences in the mainland or in Taiwan. Americans need to learn the Chinese language and culture especially Confucianism for better understanding of China and Taiwan in the 21st century for peace and economics. Nobody would impugn for such beneficient outlook.

My comment: If any conflict is to be avoided, there is no need for US to sell weapons to Taiwan since there will be peace and economic development. Any other scenarios in the 21st century? Positive or negative in the nuclear age for one's mind's eye.

Inflation is back in China and in USA. Leaders are working for the best interest of the people in the days to come? Moreover,America is in a recession or slowdown as the case maybe? Central banks policy makers should take note in developed and developing nations in the world. Trade balance of USA has been on the minus side;
