LBJ made great contributions to USA for 100th anniversary of his birth

Greetings and Salutations to JCalifano, I thoroughly enjoyed reading your super-article in the Washington Post, today on page A13. I do remember President Johnson's Medicare to cover 43 million older Americans and the Work-Study program. As a matter of fact,I was influenced by LBJ to develop "Work and Study Cycle Theory" to be validated and implemented to enhance productivity for American economic development.(Cf.www.ask.com for reference if interested.) I would also pay tribute to LBJ for Civil Rights Act in 1964. His efforts to remove racial discrimination is certainly the genuine American way of life as reflected in the 21st century and beyond. I honor LBJ and your wonderful reminder for Americans to remember LBJ's achievements. Francis Shieh,an Asian American graduate student from China in 1947 and naturalized as an American citizen in 1954. Thank you for publishing such article to enlighten your readers with my kudos to YOU. May 31,2008

Rx for Global Poverty:WashPost,May28,08 p.A13

Growth and Development including two Nobel-prize winning economists including China,Hong Kong as panel members. They identified five common elements of success.

1. Openness to global trade and, usually, an eagerness to attract foreign investment. It is known that China is a typical quintessence for reducing poverty.
2. Political stability and capable governments committed to economic growth. China is hereby cited as the host of Olympics in Beijing 2008.
3. High rates of saving and investment, usually 25% of national income. Lifestyle of the folks with Asian tradition and cultural heritage as a case in point such as Japan,Korea and China under the influence of Confucianism.
4. Economic stability, keeping government budgets and inflation under control and avoiding a broad collapse in production. Enormous cost of wars would disrupt economic stability as pointed by leading American economists cited the book entitled:. Three Trillion Dollar Meltdown et al.
5. A willingness to let markets allocate resources. China has been under the market system after reforms as empirical evidence.

Globalization has moral as well as economic and political dimensions. Adam Smith was a professor of moral philosophy and Confucianism stressed political economy with the maxim of ethics for dedication of public interest to be concerned for wellbeing of the ordinary people as democracy in action. Here is the underpinning of Sino-American Economics in the 21st century as I would envision as a student of economics. May 30, 2008.

WashPost Headline:Chinese citizens step up to rescue

Page A1:
Grassroots organizations and informal networks of private citizens are playing a vital role in getting supplies to rescue workers and survivors of devastating earthquakes in China. The government, in a notable shift, the government appears content to let them do so. My comment: It is democracy in action with citizens' initiative plus incentive of ethnic cooperation in distress to be helped by ethnic Chinese. Moreover,kind-hearted folks from other nations have made donations in money, kind and services in China. Such global cooperative and collaborative efforts are admirable and deserves to be noted for such selfless cause in human history.

Page A19: "Climate Change: Such is a global deal. For that to happen, the United States has to lead to ensure that we have an effective agreement in which China and India take part." That is the article by the former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. Here we can easily detect the need of cooperation and collaboration of USA/China in the 21st century.

Page A4:US experts bemoan nation's loss of stature in the world of science. Nina Fedoroff,a plant modecular biologist said that position in science is being challenged by others, specifically China, which is raising its global profile. They are educating ten times as many students as we are and the other generation of scientists in other countries. I

My comments: Economics is a multi-dimensional social science and is ever-changing in the world. English is an international language but Chinese is spoken by most folks in the world. Globalization needs specialists with knowledge of economics plus bi-lingual ability to handle scientific information more efficiently in English and Chinese languages. Such view was published by Guangdong/Hongkong Information Daily in February 23,1990. I was invited to be a chief compiler for a Directory of Scientific Institutions for the benefits of American scientists. It was published by Hoover Institution of Stanford University in 1971. My colleague at RAND, Richard Moorsteen published "Remaking China Policy" at Harvard University Press in 1971. Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao. May 29, 2008

Americans from A to Z with some bearing in Economics

After spending almost 61 years from coast to coast in the USA(1947-2008), I have not succeeded in learning all there is to know about Americans. Nevertheless, I would like to say A to Z as my feelings in a jiffy.

A - Americans are Westerners but First Americans were Asians.
B - Busy folks with varied colors,white,black,brown,yellow... and different value systems other than face values.
C - Competition is the be-all and end-all in business and other pursuits.
D - Dollars are an uncommonly common target for all.
E - Enter and exit human relationships readily and quickly.
F - Friendly as go-getters but "Hi" is followed by "Bye" as the norm.
G - "Go for it" as a maxim with the spirit of entrepreneurship.
H - Hypertension goes with high income and high rolling.
I - Impatience is the outcome of quick actions.
J - Jokes are a part and parcel of American humor since Mark Twain.
K - Kiss and Ride, a sign in the Subway for trains.
L - Love is used generously from gals.
M - More and more may be the chase of money.
N - Nosiness is tabooed apropos of privacy.
O - Overweight is serious problems for a good number of folks.
P - Pursuit of fame and fortune as the goal.
Q - Quest for good health and happiness as the utimate cause.
R - Risk is the underpinning theory in microeconomics.
S - Security and Sports are headlines with smart moves.
T - Teasing is a sign of being liked.
U - Unemployment breeds mortgage foreclosures nowadays.
V - Vulnerability to temptations as the case of Adam and Eve.
W - Wu is Shanghai dialect spoken by 100 millions+ folks in Shanghai and elsewhere.
X - Xenophobia may be interpreted or misinterpreted as idiolect or nuance.
Y - "Yummy" maybe a name of a restaurant to attract customers.
Z - Zip is necessary for proper delivery.

The above is subject to your modification with your own imaginations. Thanks for your time in reading my "zhuo jian" i.e. awkward instant thoughts. Have a great day to be a great American!

US firms have pledged at least $54 million in cash, goods and servides to victims of the earthquake, the third largest international aid package ever asssembled by American businesses - Procter & Gamble,Anheuser Busch and Merck et al.

China has become vitally important to US corporations as both a producer of goods and an incresingly voracious consumer of them. The donation is the largest Amway has made toward disaster relief.

Outpouring of help shifts mood in China

Washington Post,May 27, 2008 page A6: An unprecedented and politically significant flood of foreign aid has been pledged to China since the devastating Sichuan earthquake, ranging from $50 million Saudi Arabian check to crates of cellphones from Nokia. It is clear evidence that the world has sympathy to China and Chinese.

Perhaps just as significantly, the list of donor countries spans the globe, reinforcing the idea that China has integrated into the rest of the world and forged friendly relations with other governments. This had been a central theme of the upcoming Olympic Games in Beijing: One World,One Dream, I wish to add "One Human Race" since it is an international sports competition of all homosapiens in a harmonious world.

Economics of the Nation on Memorial Day 2008

Traditional Western Economics suggests the notion of a rational, self-centered individual and the assumed self-regulating market system. It is high time to realize that Socio-Economics is expected to serve humankind to be built on the value of human needs for a much richer, more encompassing, nobler and more humane perspective than the pursuit of own personal pleasure for self-interest. It should be pointed out that Americans and Chinese have the identical needs for love, self-esteem with hope and faith re ethics and morality expounded by Adam Smith and Confucius/Mencius for a just and fair society with philosophical underpinning. In Pin Yin "Guo jia" "Kuo precedes Jia" i.e. the nation and the individual.

Presidential Candidate Obama told graduates of Wesleyan University to consider public service because our individual salvation depends on collective salvation.

Former President John F. Kennedy had the same idea as maxim for the nation.
Dr. Sun, the founder of China,is being honored in Chinese mainland and in Taiwan as well with his motto: "Tian Xia Wei Gong" i.e. "The World for Public Sector" to stress the importance of the public interest for China. The leaders in China has cited "Yi Ren Wei Ben" emphasizing human needs in economics. However, the private sector must be recognized for incentives but greed mast be avoided. Corruption of some individuals is a case in point apropos of China and USA as well.

Farrar Straus and Giroux. 376 pp. $26 Reviewed by Anne-Marie Staughter, Dean of Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton and author of "The Idea that is America: Keeping Faith with our Values in a dangerous world." I have reason to believe that folks with faith and goodwill would have similar value with the goal of economic development by means of trade to validate the Law of Comparative Advantage known to students of economics. The world may be dangerous but any danger may be eliminated when leaders are aware of the nuclear potential to humankind in the positive scenarios.

"Discover Your Inner Economist" by Tyler Cowen

The author is Professor of Economics at George Mason University, a charming, smart and creative blogger at martginalrevolution.com,the world's leading economics blog. He is a cultural vulture with expertise in Chinese cuisine and not a Prof.Scam with abstruce knowledge of econometrics.
This professor is a rare bird and an entertaining writer and a deeply humane thinker. Thinking better can actually help us live better and smarter. Turning economic reasoning to your advantage is the key to successful and satisfactory daily interactions to attain a happier and a more satisfying life. What better fortune cookie could you ask for? The central concept of economics is not money but rather incentives(or initiatives as well?) An incentive can be money but it can also be an act of devotion or mantra et al. Money cannot buy love, respect or peace of mind. The real purpose of economics is to set more of the good things in life i.e. to maximize and to optimize all situations at our finger tips. Economics takes folks from want and misery(earthquake) to health and plenitude.(completeness, abundance and entirety)after reconstruction in Sichuan,China. Olympics would be impressive in Beijing, August 2008 and Shanghai Expo in 2010.
David Friedman, authoir of Holden Order: The Economics of Everyday Life.
Steven Landsburg, author of Fair Play.
Both promote economics as a tool of universal reasoning.
Francis Shieh encourages "Yi ren wei ben" in Pin Yin, based on homosapiens as the be-all and end-all of the goal for humanity. We apply the ideas of our personal allocation of time resource:
Daily Function is equal to: S+NS(Sleep + non-sleep time) over Time Constraint and we are the decision makers to allocate our time for this or for that kind of activity everyday.
Equation of Happiness: Not material consumption over desire as the numerator but we must add intellectual pursuit, spiritual satisfaction and good health in the numerator over the desire as denominator in a fraction. Simple enough?

Applied economics is as much of an art as a science. Chinese language is a form of art re calligraphy and a form of music apropos of the four tones of Mandarin. Cf."A Glimpse of the Chinese Language" in English www.rand.org for reference.

Economists have wonderful theories but which theory is relevant? "Work and Study Cycle Theory" may be validated and implemented in USA and in China. Cf.www.ask.com for information.

I would highly recommend Prof. Tyler Cowen's wonderful book to all the readers online as I do admire his lively scholarship to be able to share his wisdom to students for the true nature of economics in a nutshell.

Lively spree for savvy economists to spread the words

Some economists question the fundamental assumptions of free market system. Those who have doubts may be considered deluded by others.(sic) But economics has extra magnitude with varied dimensions+++ i.e. all roads lead to the interpretations of economics as I would view economics obliquely but never a so-called apostate. Books have been published in this regard such as "freakonomics" et al. Xie Shihao in Pin Yin may be known in different Chinese characters: It may mean "viewing economics indirectly from other points correctly." The truth is that economics may be multi-dimensional. In this connection,China's successful market system re high rate of growth with Chinese characteristics is a case in point. I sent my previous blog apropos to "one nation, two systems" Such innovative idea should be explored re Hong Kong and eventually to Taiwan as well as I would envision in the 21st century.

Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao, thanks from poetic hero in Chinese characters in Pin Yin. Such Chinese characters are different from "looking from the sides" as mentioned above to interpret economics. Xie Shihao in Pin Yin may also mean "good explanations" or "humor is good" in different Chinese characters.

If the readers of my blogs are flummoxed,it would be OK due to the very nature of economics and the Pin Yin system of alphabets to be phonetically similar but not identical to different Chinese characters. For details, see "A Glimpse of the Chinese Language" in English. Cf. www.rand.org for reference. Economics is fun and the Chinese Mandarin is fun. That is the reason I claim to be a lifelong student of economics and the Chinese language as an octogenarian. Needless to say,I am also a student of English otherwise I would not be able to send my blogs in English. You cannot agree with me more!? But not you cannot disagree with me more? For workers and consumers:USA and China

Business Week, May 26, 2008 page 011

Rethinking Capitalism: "Adam Smith is probably dead. Maybe it is time to revisit Karl Marx." Said by Turkey's Ishak Alaton, the most prominent capitalist, CEO of Alarko Holding an 800 million conglomerate, is profiled in the May 4th issue of Business Week. Alaton believes firms worldwide must do more to bridge growing chasm between the haves and havenots - Businesses need to maximize the wellbeing of their own workers and consumers as a whole. Call it Alaton's spin on Das Kapital.

My comment: Economic systems do not matter much, the more meaningful goal is for the wellbeing of workers and consumers in USA and in China. Both nations are working for the wellbeing of workers and consumers especially during the election year 2008 in USA from the campaign speeches. There is the common ground for leaders to pay attention to the grassroots in the 21st century.

Sino-American Economics of Eleemosynary work

Washington Post,May 23, 2008 page A1,A14: The Center on Philanthropy provided the estimate for the earthquake in China - $30.9 million.
Charities said they are expecting more donations, particularly from Chinese Americans, who are pooling resources to help in the earthquake's aftermath.
"We are seeing a mobilization of Chinese Americans and the Chinese diaspora that I have never seen before." said Randy Strash, emergency response director for Christian Charity World Vision. "These people are going to be suffering for a long time." said Elizabeth Griffin, a spokeswoman for Catholic Relief Services. In China, the government has mobilized its military and resources in an extraordinarily public display of aid to an estimated 5 million displaced folks. In the first three days after the quake, Chinese citizens reportedly donated $192 million to show unity of sympathy as compatriots. Keep up such humanitarian effort in the name of humanity.

Vocational education: Sino-American Economics of Training

Washington,DC school system officials are upgrading vocational education, renaming it career and technical education and incorporating a college-prep track as reported by briefing published by the WashPost,May 13, 2008 on page B4.

1. Keys for Economic Understanding. 1971.

2. Keys to Economic Understanding. 1976. Cf. www.ask.com for information.

The guidelines call for more rigorous courses to better prepare students for college, especially the role of community colleges as stressed by US Presidential candidates in their campaign speeches to solve the unemployment problems having marketable skills. British Prime Minister cited the same at C-Span Radio lately. No wonder "Keys for Economic Understanding" is published in UK as well. The book is listed at www.Borders.com when clicking on Used Books.

It is a known fact that China needs gray-collar workers,i.e. paraprofessionals;neither white collar, nor blue collar workers especially in major cities such as Shanghai as I read the reports.

Introducing Jim Webb's "A Time to Fight" - Reclaiming a Fair and Just America. Senator Jim Webb tells his remarkable story and sets forth bold ideas to get America back on track again. It is provocative, power and personal since he is a proud member of a working class family, a decorated Marine who rose to become Secretary of the Navy and a US Senator. He expects to close the gap between the very rich and the middle class. My comment: I believe that the middle class is the background of any nation. That maybe the common cause for USA and China in the 21st century.
Here we can see the common goal to train the skilled labor as human capital for humanity apropos of globalization.

Middle Class Jitters: WashPost,May 22, 08 page A25

"We middle-class Americans are in a funk. The overarching economic narrative of the campaign is the idea that life for the middle class has grown more difficult. More than half of Americans believe they either have not moved ahead in the past 5 years or have fallen behind. Such is the most downbeat assessment of personal progress in nearly half a century." Robert J. Samuelson wrote in his relevant article today.

"It is not that Americans have lost their optimism.: He said. "There is an underlying disenchantment that seems to predate today's higher oil prices, falling home values and declining employment." My comment: Elan,Yeah but Ennui,Nay!

"Almost all Americans consider themselves middle class. The prevalence of middle-class ambitions and values creates a vexing contradiction: The advances in living standards that Americans expect require a flexible and competitive economy that weakens the security and stability that Americans also expect.

My comment: It is a matter of priority as published in Econ. textbooks.
How to expect a flexible and competitive economy? We must invest in human resources i.e. to supply the demand of a changing society by having marketable skills as I sent my previous blogs.

Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao, a student of humanistic economics on May 22, 2008

Crude oil price is zooming up? Blame OPEC?

Presidential candidates cite current higher oil prices, jobs, wages and war et al. Is the world run by economists? NO! However, political leaders need economic advice to make policies and economic issues are always at the core. Law and Economics are linked apropos of policies. "Keys for Economic Understanding"(1971) published with the focus of "yi ren wei ben" in Pin Yin i.e. stressing human resources with education and training to enhance productivity. Robert Eisner, professor of economics emeritus at Northwestern University and a past president of the American Economic Association published the same rationale in the Wall Street Journal, July 29, 1998 on page A14. This endorsement is clear evidence of the need of the common goal of USA and China. Such insightful wisdom is bound to prevail. I found out a week ago that "Keys for Economic Understanding" is also published in UK. "Work and Study Cycle Theory" is also published in Ann Arbor,Michigan and London,UK. Cf. www.ask.com for reference. In the globalized economy, American economic wellbeing depends on China's growth and the open society for trade to benefit consumers of other nations as well to validate the Law of Comparative Advantage. China's market system is to be compared with American economic system with the understanding of externalities beyond the supply and demand curves due to market failures. "One nation, two systems" can be validated by conceptual understanding of the equilibrium point to correspond with the society's production possibility curve. Sequel to "self-indulgent culture"

Washington Post,May 21, 2008 page C1:

"The Internationalist checks Americans' cultural baggage.

The comedy for the age of globalization. The notion that playwright Anne Washburn toys with in her diverting work at Studio Theatre has to do with Americans' sense of cultural superiority and how quickly arrogance melts away when one is forced to play by the rules of an ever more confident rest of the world.

Perhaps the above paragraph can be applied to Sino-American Economics of Pride and Prejudice in the light vein.

Another China Trade Opportunity by Jeremy Haft

Wall Street Journal,May 19, 2008 page A13: U.S. exports could soon boom even more. In the months to come, China's central and provincial governments will spend billions to remake hospitals, commercial and power networks, road and infrastructure dams and water treatment facilities, factories, schools and houses. China's demand will help absorb the shock of our solvency crises. China is essentially America's economic alter ego. China will keep buying more and more from America. America and China's interests are aligned. My comment: I do concur with such rationale published in the WSJ today as the identical reasoning apropos Sino-American Economics.

China Earthquake: Economic Tremors to follow?

Washington Post,May 19, 2008 page A13:

The most critical global economic issue may be the impact on oil prices. On May 16,2008,crude jumped to $128 a barrel in New York on speculation that China, the world's second largest consumers, after the USA,would have to increase imports because of energy short falls, resulting from earthquake damage.

Chinese officials announced the unusual measure of releasing tens of thousands of tons of grains and vegetable oil from national reserves. Such timely action is to be commended for the wellbeing of people in China.

Lehman Brothers research report stated that although the analyst did not expect significant disruption in agricultural production, the crisis could still exacerbate panics on rice supply given shortages in the global rice market. In Pin Yin "Zhong Zhi Cheng Cheng" i.e. four Chinese characters as embodiment of Chinese with sympathy and empathy of folks all over the world as fellow homosapiens.

In English, there may be three interpretations:

1. United we stand.
2. Unity is strength.
3. Unity is the road to victory.
Have your own pick for "Zhong Zhi Cheng Cheng." in Pin Yin as phonetic alphabets to describe the epitome in China today. Reconstruction is on the way!

One view: Steve Forbes of Forbes media wrote: Supply and Demand as the primary cause of high oil prides? Second View: Alfred Kahn, emeritus Prof. of Econ. at Cornell: Growing long-term imbalance between supply and demand worldwide and the decline in the value of US$ vis-a-vis Euro. The Post-American World by Fareed Zakaria

Just published by Norton. 291 pp. $25.95

After the Iraq war, Fareed Zakaria argued in his Newsweek column that the world's new organizing principle was pro-or anti-Americanism. But as the Iraq muddle drags on and China rises, the larger story of the post-Cold War era has come into sharp relief. We are not the center of the universe. My comment: China, the Middle Kingdom i.e. Zhong Guo is the center of the world in reference to economic growth rate.

Zakaria zooms in on Asia, especially India and China, which he uses as proxies for the rest. "Working Longer" or "Teaching Longer"? That is the query!?

Warren Buffett thinks the FED did the right thing in stepping in on Bear Stearns. He and Berkshire Vice Chairman Charles Munger talked humorously on investing, the economy and life. "Moyers on Democracy by Bill Moyers Doubleday$26.95

Moyers is a media celebrity. His main topics are democracy, money and media. "Money is choking democracy to death," he says, while the "compliant establishment media" look on. Hugh disparities in wealth have turned our shining city upon a hill into a "gated community whose privileged occupants...are removed from the common life of the country." While ordinary citizens watch their pensions and job security evaporate, the top 1 percent of households now has more wealth than the bottom 90% combined. "Freedom in America," Moyers says, "has come to mean the freedom of the rich to get richer even as millions of Americans are thrown overboard." The author is engaged in truth telling: saying what cannot be said, yet must be said in 404 pages. His truth telling is the same as my lectures in the past. What a coincidence!

Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao,an independent observer of American socio-economic society since 1947 with unabashed liberalism favoring democratic reform similar to the reforms in China as I have seen with my own eyes since 1981. Deng's reform started in 1978,thirty years ago. I have reason to believe that there will be reforms in USA after January 20, 2009.

"The War for Wealth" by Gabor Steingart

This book is just published in May 2008 by McGraw Hill $29.95. Dr. Henry Kissinger recommends it very highly and I do concur with him for his insightful review.

On page 104. The Chinese economic miracle was made possible only by China's entry into the global economy. The joint venture began with less than $7 million in 1980 but mushroomed to $27 billion by 1990. The sum of all foreign investment in China is about $250 billion today. I hinted the opening of China to the world on page 8 in "A Glimpse of the Chinese Language" published by the RAND Corporation in 1965 when Dr. Kissinger was a consultant at RAND and I was a member of the research staff in the Department of Economics. Moreover,I gave a lecture to the staff at the Chinese Embassy in early 1970s to the same effect with my modest vision as an economist with macroview of China to be opening up for the benefits of other nations as well. The combination of Chinese labor and Western capital to be reflected as factors of production for international division of labor in basic economics. Furthermore,I lectured in different cities in China almost every year since 1981. It is gratifying to witness the drastic changes in China. The first American Nobel laureate Paul Samuelson mentioned the great potential of China in the book from page 261-274. The prognosis of Goldman Sachs in 2050 is that the future of China will be ahead of the United States. Needless to say, that remains to be seen. Professor Samuelson stated that the globelization leads to a win-win situation for people in China but is different in the USA because professional members of the workforce will profit, while the run-0f-the-mill working class people will be the losers. I would recommend the role of community colleges to train the grassroots with the title of "The Future of Community Colleges" published by the Congressional Record,July 18, 1974 and quoted by Richard T. Gill of Harvard in economics textbooks in 1970s and 1980. Moreover, "Keys for Economic Understanding" was published in 1971 with the same rationale. Cf. www.ask.com for reference. Prof. Samuelson also stated that poor Americans shop products made in China to boost their living standard. Here is an evidence of Sino-American economics in action. Students at Harvard asked Economics professor Joseph Schumpeter about the future of economic systems suchh as Capitalism and Socialism. Schumpeter replied "Socialism"and his students were shocked because Schumpeter was a conservative economist. But the professor replied:"My prediction is not necessarily my preference." Well,Schumpeter's prediction can be seen in China's system i.e. Socialism with Chinese characteristics i.e. to get rich is glorious with profit incentives within the laws. Samuelson's conclusions are :
1. Taking the middle way. My thought turns to "Zhang rong zhi dao" in Chinese philosophy.
2. Be less aggressive. I would think of Zhuangzi, the Chinese philosopher who stressed tranquility for equanimity.

Adam Smith was a professor of moral philosophy and economics. Here we can detect the underpinning of economics in philosophy of life. No wonder Ph.D. in economics would mean Doctor of Philosophy in Economics. But how many economists are philosophers? Intellectual food for profound thoughts, indeed!

Sino-American Economics to be intertwined with Japan-China's new relations

WashPost,May 10, 2008 page A9: China has become Japan's largest trading partner, with the trade volume between the two nations at $236 billion last year. China is destined to be the preeminent economy in Asia, and this week's state visit by President Hu of China signals the Japanese government's acceptance of that inexorable trend. My comment: Such new relationship should be noted by the American businesses by reason of competition since Japanese science and technology are superior as evidenced by auto industry and other electronic products as well. In 1991,I remember the headlines as "He said and She said" re Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and Professor Anita Hill in the Headlines: TIME magazine October 15, 2007 published "Verbatim" : "She was not the demure, religious, conservative person that they portrayed. That is not the person I knew. Justice wrote a memoir, lashing out again after 16 years at former employee. Anita Hill ,biting back at Thomas, reviving at the confirmation hearing: "I will not stand by silently and allow him, in his anger, to reinvent me." "The New Paradigm for Financial Markets" By George Soros

Just published by Public Affairs in New York, May 2008. $22.95 Soros is the founder of network to supporting open societies with the same rationale of open university concept for lifelong learning without walls. "Work and Study Cycle Theory" is related to such educational innovation. www.ask.com for reference.

It is a fascinating book. Soros' unique blend of philosophy engagement, financial experience, and political passion yields a harvest of insights and perceptive comments. - Foreign Affairs.

Page 131: The Oligopolarization of America - i.e. merger mania as Professor John K. Galbraith envisioned decades ago.

Soros stated: "In my judgment, China will sail through the current financial crisis and subsequent recession with flying colors and gain considerable relative strength.

Page 130: China is exerting considerable influence on other emerging economies.

Page 151: We plan to support various training schemes. "Keys for Economic Understanding" has elaborated various training programs to enhance productivity. www.ask.com.

In the conclusion:"Now the equilibrium theory has shown itself to be such a failure at both prediction and explanation, the field is more open. Economic developments could disrupt the world economy. Here we can detect political economy in action with multi-disciplinary approaches.

Page 157: We are facing a period of greatly increased uncertainty. J.K. Galbraith published "The Age of Uncertainty" several decades ago with his vision. Cf."Almost Everyone's Guide to Economics" Book review was published by Atlantic Economic Journal,September 1979. Such may be searched online.

Soros' theory of reflexivity is to be tested since there is no clear-cut answers. I would reiterate the humorous expression:"There are those who don't know and those who don't know they don't know." However,Soros is one of the astute observers of knowledge in the field of finance and economics with analytical ability par excellence!

World Bank Source: Unleashing prosperity-China

"Economist" magazine,May 9, 2008 issue on page 106: The more productive an economy is the more effectively it uses capital and labor. China is leading all nations for sources apropos of real GDP growth,% 1999-2005. Paul Krugman,Economics Professor at MIT commented about China to be accounted for the bulk of rising affluence. My comment: Delta Output is the function of Delta K and Delta L. i.e. Changing Output is the function of changing more plant capacity usage for K and bigger workforce in China for Labor Force Development as per my simple equation.

Page 13: Many Chinese enjoy a prosperity undreamt of by their forefathers.
Chinese rage has focused on the "Anti-China" bias of the Western press, which is accused of ignoring violence by Tibetans in the unrest in March 14,2008. China-bashing can be expected with protectionist sentiments in the US. However,Treasury Secretary Paulson,Jr. is in the know for his positive scenario re US-China relations i.e. Sino-American Economics for mutual benefit.

The Olympics have become a symbol of China's right to the respect it is due. Protests, criticism and boycott threats are seen as part of a broader refusal to accept and accomodate China. My comment: China has been a member of WTO and consumers are being benefited for less cost. Wal-Mart is a typical example of success in the United States and in China as empirical evidence.
The unprecedented phenomenon, of the rapid integration into the world of its most populous country, seem irreversible. The world and China have to learn to live with each other. The best way to have better understanding is for Westerners to study Chinese language and culture of music re four tones in Mandarin and the art apropos of calligraphy. www.ask.com or www.rand.org for reference.

It is more blessed to give. Givers tend to be happier

Folks who made gifts to others reported they were happier than folks who did not share, according to a report in the journal "Science." While studies have shown that having more money can increase happiness, the researchers at the University of British Columbia and Harvard University wondered if the way people spent their money made any difference. Turns out,it does! Professor of Psychology at UBC said she was not surprised that doing something for others made people happy. In Chinese Pin Yin:" Zhu Ren Wei Le" Four Chinese characters would have the same meaning. "Zhu" is help;"ren" as folks;"wei" to become or id.est(Latin). "le" is happy. There are two other expressions: 1. "Zi De Qi Le" Having utility or satisfaction in one's own right would generate happiness. 2. "Zhi Zu Chang Le" a satisfied person is always happy.

A study published in the 2006 journal: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that the brain produced the good feeling when a person does good deeds. In Pin Yin: "Hao Ren You Hao Bao." i.e. A good person gets the good "kickback." Money is NOT the key to a happy life! Our relationship to money offers great potential for spiritual growth. "To inspire and be inspired" and "To love and be loved" as our daily guidelines.

When a person approaches others with joyous and compassionate attitude and be guided by love as the greatest wealth of all. What goes around comes around. Kindness begets kindness and generosity breeds generosity.

U110/IdeaPads by Lenovo,the Chinese company

Wall Street Journal,May 8, 2008 page D1: Lenovo, the Chinese company that took over the brand from IBM is bringing out a new, consumer-focused line called IdeaPads,U119.

China's consumer economy has been surging especially in thriving, commercial centers such as Shanghai.

For US investors, participating in China's consumer boom,is getting easier. China Mobile Ltd., China Eastern Airlines Corp., China Life Insurance Co., now trade on the New York Stock Exchange.

Page A11: Leaders of China , Japan move to get past distrust. Trade between Japan and China, including Hong Kong reached 33 trillion Yen i.e. $315 billion in 2007. The future scenario is expected to be going upward for mutual benefits derived from the Law of Comparative Advantage.

Get healthy red meat via Chinese cuisine: -Sino-American Economics of Human Capital for good health:

Experts agree that a diet rich in red meat can negatively impact your health. In addition to concerns about saturated fat and heart disease, research now shows that red meat is linked to an increased risk for colorectal cancer.

But moderate amounts of lean red meat up to 18 ounces per week are a welcome addition to any diet.

This simplified adaptation of a Chinese classic - beef with broccoli - is the perfect example of a beef-based meal that is tender, flavorful and follows the current recommendation for limited consumption of red meat. Each serving provides just 3 ounces of cooked tenderloin. Fresh ginger imparts a bit of kick to this dish. A distant cousin to bamboo, ginger's ancient origins can be traced to China. Garlic also spices up this recipe.

Focus on Competition: WashPost,May 7,08 p.H1

East and West are vying for more than $700 billion worth of business as Saudi Arabia transforms itself from one of the world's biggest oil producers into an industrial and intellectual powerhouse.

The Saudi business community expects US firms to take up a sizeable number of these investment opportunities. American corporations are still positioned as the number one investor in the kingdom.

As part of a stratetic development of its economic policy, the kingdom is paying increasing attention to the huge development markets of Asia. China and Japan are already the kingdom's largest export markets for oil and oil products and eastward trade is certain to increase as the Chinese and Indian economies continue to expand.

President Hu is now visiting Japan with good relations with India as a neighbor. Here we can detect the Sino-American Economics if we are watching competition of resources in the 21st century.

Senator Clinton should have consulted the US-China Business Council apropos of US exports to China. Trade creates new opportunities too. Rather than ratcheting up the anti-trade and anti-China rhetoric, the Presidential candidates would do better focusing on helping Americans seize opportunities of trade. My comment: Law of Comparative Advantage must be understood. Moreover,Treasury Secretary Paulson,Jr. is fully aware of the benefits to be derived by closer economic relations with China in terms of Sino-American savvy economics.

Nostalgia visiting Japan and Korea in 1984 et al.

I visited Tokyo and Osaka, Japan and Seoul,Jizhou,Korea in 1984 as the guest of Professor Hanshil Koh of Tokyo University. He is the author of "How American Laws are Made" in Japanese and Korean languages. Presidents Nixon and Ford commended him for such significant scholarly contributions benefiting Japanese and Koreans in their native languages if they are not familiar with the English yet. Moreover, folks in America can learn Japanese and Korean languages apropos of Ammerican Law.

President Hu is now visiting Japan and I envisioned closer cooperation and collaboration between Japan and China in economics of trade and other scientific exchanges decades ago. Since Japan is rated next to the United States in economic clout, the upcoming economic relationship of Japan and China should be of great interest for the United States. If the new President of the United States (after January 20, 2009 )does have astute vision of globalization, future cooperation and collaboration between the the largest developed nation such as USA and the largest developing nation i.e. China would also benefit peoples of two nations in the 21st century and beyond.
In recollection,I was interviewed by "Kuai Bao" in Hong Kong when I was a Fulbright Senior Scholar,I had positive scenario about trade relations of Japan and China as published by such paper in April 5, 1990. Wen Wei Bao in Hong Kong also published my optimistic outlook of China in terms of trade between US and China.

Washington Post,June 27, 1990 published the American CEOs blamed their employees' lack of skills and commitment for a decline in quality of goods and services according to a Gallup survey. For the same issue, Cf.a book entitled "Keys for Economic Understanding" (1971) www.ask.com for reference.

May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

A celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. Much like Black History and Women's History celebrations. APA Heritage Month originated in a congressional bill. On October 5, 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a Joint Resolution designating the first 2 weeks of May an annual celebration of Asian Pacific American heritage. In May 1990, the holiday was expanded further when President George H. W. Bush designated May to be Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

A book responding to spiritual call in USA and in China

May the Holy Spirit(Laotianye) make you...brave in your initiatives, so that you will be able to offer your contribution to the building up of the civilization of love(harmony) Bestseller: Book World and New York Times.

Carl Anderson's "Civilization of Love" is a distinguished contribution to America and to the world. It is to be known that Confucianism would stress the same harmonious culture for peace and development to the world. "Within four seas,we are all brothers!" as the universal guidelines in Olympics' "One World,One Dream" and I wish to add "One human race" to be aware of globalization on earth. We can detect the meeting ground of the East and the West. The author artfully weaves theory and practice, giving us a rare specimen indeed: a practical guide for all idealists in the positive scenario. Available online and at bookstores everywhere.

Reflections of American past: BUT-(as published in the Book Word,WashPost,May4,08)

Now,burdened by internal divisions and a discredited president, the conservative movement is in retreat, in a recent Pew survey only a third of Americans called themselves conservative. Facing an uncertain future, conservatives have become increasingly celebratory about their leaders of the past, especially the iconic Ropnald Reagan and the recently departed William F. Buckley Jr. ,who lit the torch at National Review in the 1950s. I still remember the year 1950 when I earned my graduate degree at Georgetown University. The American history is passed, this is election year now and we shall be able to find out the judgment of voters about the trend of America in the 21st century after January 20, 2009.

Common Causes for folks in US and China

1. Exercise daily for one hour by moving. The stronger the body, the longer our lives. Walking is the best way to be centenarians.
2. Diet and watch our carb intake. Chinese dishes include veggie plus steamed fish for good health.
3. Brush and floss our teeth in our mouth.
4. Vitamin D helps our immune system.
5. Avoid smoking and drinking except fresh air and water.
6. Keep our clear head with positive scenarios.
7. Leaving pesky things behind and have peace of mind with equanimity.
8. Be diligent and keep an active mind.
9. Money and wealth are transient and ephemeral in the mundane world.
10. Success in economic achievement requires contribution in economic activities to be beneficial to private interest plus public wellbeing.

A hospital charges $45,000 for lab tests and demands an additional $60,000 to admit a woman to be treated for cancer. Just imagine the cost in USA to be compared with the cost in China for comparisons for economics of health.

Disney's theme parks and resourts have held up surprisingly well owing partly to an influx of international visitors taking advantage of the dollar's prolonged weakness.

The US currency contributes to rising energy prices because oil is priced in dollars. It also leads some investors to buy commodities to protect against the threat of inflation such as precious metals like gold and silver or copper. America needs long-term economic thinking since we'll be around ad infinitum in the field of economics.

Disney in Hong Kong is OK and there are plans to titilate the fancy for a new one in Shanghai under discussion.

Economics is all about humanity's struggle to achieve happiness in a world full of constraints without borders and limits in terms of globalization. China is the most populous nation in the world so China's economy should be of interest to the USA as the most developed nation in the world.

Common Ground to ride bikes in US and in China

USA Weekend - May 2-4, 2008:BIKE TO WORK -

There is a long list of reasons to bike to work. "It is surprisingly quick, it's good for your health and your pocketbook, especially in light of rising gas prices, and it helps people get out of their physical inactivity rut," says Andy Clarke, executive director of the League of American Bicyclists. And, he says, it is the ultimate in multi-tasking: You clear your head and get in a workout while simply commuting to the office. Tips for commuting by bike:

First, get a helmet.
Next, Get familiar with the path. Bike route maps are available online.
Two or three times a week has great health benefits.

Good readings push up dollar:WashPost,May 2,08

Page D3: The government has sent stimulus checks to taxpayers and the effects of the FED's rate cuts working their way through the financial system, many investors are focused on the second half of the year, when they are betting the economy will rebound. My query: In the foreign exchange market, when the Dollar value is up,RMB's value is bound to be down with the supply and demand curves. However, that's not the wish of some policy makers. In other words, the policy makers wish to see RMB to be up vis-a-vis the US Dollar as the recent happenings. But who would know for sure the value of the Dollar vis-a-vis EURO or RMB in the second half of 2008? That remains to be seen. Economics is an INEXACT science, indeed! It deals with many factors that economists are unable to predict the future with exactness. I still remember a query raised by a student decades ago: You are an economist, howcome you are not rich? I replied: I am an economic philosopher and I am not interested in getting rich quick. Moreover, economics is an inexact science in the same catagory as medical science. You may ask a medical doctor:"Can you live a longer life as a holder of MD degree?" Not exactly in good humor! However, the following off-the-cuff recommendation may be useful for reference:

Robert Kagan's article: Ideology's Rude Return

Published by the Washington Post,May 2,2008 page A21:

The writer used the word Autocracy to describe Russia and China as a "challenge" to the liberal West. Such approach appears to be antagonistic for readers as I would perceive the gist of the article. My humble comments are as follows:

1. Russia and China are two sovereign nations and two nations have different tradition and culture. They should not be put into the same catagory.

2. CIA Chief cited China not as a threat as published by the Washington Post.

3. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff,Navy Admiral Mike Mullen used the word "vulnerability" as published by the WashPost,May 1,08 on page A4. Query: Should we cultivate friendship with Russia and China instead of being negative to use the word "challenge" to the United States. Nations must tolerate values in the nuclear age for coexistence.

4. The writer is a senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. I would also stress peace and economic development for USA to deal with Russia and China rather than thinking about cooperations as the dream. His latest book entitled "The Return of History and the End of Dreams" may be reconsidered in light of the progress in the 21st century re not returning to history and One World,One Dream for Beijing 2008 Olympics. The good dream of working together of all nations.

5. He cited Russian foreign minister Lavrov to welcome the return of ideological competition but no mention of any citation from Chinese foreign minister as a matter of equal citation. Such conclusion would not dovetail with the citation of Russia and China as the same entity in other paragraphs.

6. I would hope that the writer be informed about US-China economic relations or Sino-American Economics to see the real difference of the relationships among USA,Russia and China in proper light from empirical evidence.
