Sequel of Sino-American Economics

Global Economic Competition in action: US,China and EU i.e. US Dollar,RMB(Chinese currency) and Euro:

Both US and EU have been plagued with problems of low growth and high unemployment but EURO has been a strong currency and RMB seems strong as well. China's economy needs to be cooled down as RMB is gaining value Vs US Dollars in foreigh exchange market.

Supposing there is an inflow of $100 billion into China as investment and more and more downward pressure is put on the US Dollar breeding record-breaking inflation of food prices in USA(say over 10%) which may be similar to the rate of inflation in China. When investors pull money out of American securities, stock market will fall again. It is the game of betting in or out of USA or China. Any scenarios would bear the evidence of globalization in the 21st century as I would envision. Thanks for your time in reading and your feedback is invited to assure equal opportunity of expression as guaranteed by the Constitution of USA.

Ex-US Army Captain Yee, a graduate of West Point, class 1990 drew national attention after American treatment of Guantanamo detainees. Yee, formerly a Lutheran and whose father had served during WWII, converted to Islam in 1991. Unfortunately being an American Muslim made him a target but he advocated essentially American values, values of diversity, tolerance, religious freedom.

According to the radio broadcast on March 31, 2008: World's followers of Islam already exceeded Catholic Christians in the 21st century. Chinese universities provide special food courts and USAF bases have services for Muslims as I have noticed in China and in USA. Such arrangements are good for humanity. On being Chinese or American from the face value would not be as important as the character of being kind and good as a human being. Any other scenarios in this mundane world?

The Treasury Secretary Paulson has new plan today for mortgages in America but a professor at the University of Maryland commented about such plan to be in favor to investment bankers. Here we may be able to detect some aspects of Sino-American economics in terms of global banking and the vision of Henry Paulson,Jr. re US-China economic relations. Food for thought for the readers to form your own judgment for fairness.

Highly educated folks can live longer as per Harvard researchers

Harvard University Health researchers have found out that folks with low educational background could live to age 75 but those with higher education can stay longer to age 82(sic). The reason may be attributable to smoking, drinking, poor environment and less investment in health such as the poor lifestyle living in high crime rate neighborhood et al. However,we are able to choose our way of life in this mundane world.

Guidelines to have longevity may be as follows:

1.We can have positive attitude in our encounters with folks.
2.We may develop the proper mindset in doing things.
3.We could find ways to fit our environment with green approach.
4.We should control our mood on daily basis with willpower.
5.We optimize our situations to maximize utility in our activities.
6.We plan ahead with determination for success.
7.We stress the quality of life on earth to honor Earth Day everyday.
8.We strive for equanimity re tranquility.
9.We wear a smile without any cost.
10. We endorse the Happiness Formula to add intellectual pursuit, spiritual satisfaction in addition to the search of material consumption in our living.
In sum,FAITH, HOPE and LOVE do remain in our heart and mind all the time ad infinitum for eternity. Corinthians 13:13-14:1a

Law of Probability in USA with Chinese motif

LAS VEGAS Gambles on Asian Visitors: The Wynn Las Vegas Resort has a restaurant called Red 8, a jackpot for Asians who also consider the color red good fortune. Perhaps it implies that the East is Red.(sic) "Wynn went out of its way to appeal to Asian visitors," observes Schwartz, due to the Resort's principal backer, Kazu Okada, who has a restaurant named after him at the hotel. "This resort has Eastern- inspired art throughout the grounds and the lion statues guarding the hotel entrance are exact replicas of the entrance to the Bank of Shanghai and other institutions in China as well. It would be like Americans seeing a copy of the Washington Monument overseas - they want Asians to feel at home." Says Schwartz. "Steve Wynn jokes that the East is becoming so powerful that soon his corporation will be known as an Asian company with a casino in Las Vegas. China's economy is booming with or without such law of probability.

It is said that besides gambling, Asians customarily spend their money on lavish weddings, and Las Vegas is the most popular spot in the world to get hitched. Wedding planners are betting 8-8-08 may be busiest date in history to tie the knot. US Treasury Department's Bureau of Engraving issued US paper currency with 888,the lucky number. GOOGLE is the pantheon of internet-based companies. Google stands out as both particularly successful and particularly innovative. The Chinese phonetic equivalents of "gu ge" for Google would mean the sound in the valley to imply echoes around the world from the valley. How true and proper! Google's expressed mission is to organize the world's information reaching an acceleerated product development with functionality of life cycle. Cf."Work and Study Cycle Theory" as the virtuous circle to enhance productivity with lifelong learning. President Bush and Australian Prime Minister Rude discussed about issues including situation in Tibet. The P.M. from Australia cited the sovereignty of China re Tibet but Dalai Lama aims his goal for so-called Independence. Chinese leaders are aware of the sovereignty of China and action was taken to maintain law and order. Media distortation about Tibet may be attributed to the language problems i.e. truth may be lost in translation and the Prime Minister jof Australia knows the Chinese language and understand China better with his background in Chinese culture. I would hope that more Americans would make efforts to study the Chinese language to be able to perceive Sino-American economics with better understanding. US and China in common: Combatting Terrorism

Economics and the Roots of Terrorism by Alan Krueger,Professor of Economics and Public Policy at Princeton University,New Jersey,USA. He is the coauthor of "Inequality in America: What role for human capital? Human rights? The most important human rights will be the right to non-discrimination. Discrimination generated the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

This book is written by one of the most respected and influential economists in America. He explains why our tactics in the fight against Terrrorism must be based on factors that motivate individuals to participate in activities from social and economic conditions in the societies from which they come. On page 15,HATE Crime is cited. In USA,Ku Klux Klan was the most common hate group. In China,Hate Han Chinese and hate China on March 14, 2008. In Iraq, suicide bombing carried out against Americans and other Westerners. Racial reason is in evidence.

Research is sine qua non to study Terrorism in USA and in Iraq. Education would lead to greater tolerance, and respect for nonviolent forms of protest if warranted rather than self-righteousness and extremism such as riots in Tibet on March 14,2008 under organized plan for deception or ploy to denigrate Olympics in China starting in summer of 2008. Lawmakers to CNN,MSNBC: Cover the Asian Vote

Several members of the US Congress have scored the mainstream media for their lack of coverage of the Asian American and Pacific Islander vote during the presidential primaries and caucuses.

The lawmakers are: US Representatives Mike Honda; Eni Faleomavaega; Madeleine Bordalio; Neil Abercrombie; Xavier Becerra; Al Green; Mazie Hirono; Doris Matsui, Robert Scott; and David Wu. We are the minority of the minorities!

However,Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders make up the fastest growing racial group in the US nationwide, approximately 7 million Asian Americans are eligible to vote. It is estimated about 6% of US population at present but will be increasing to 33 million by 2050. It is time that due attention is paid to this rapidly growing and politically relevant community.

In California,Asian voters represented 8% of the population and exceeded the African American population by 1%.

Asian Americans would be disappointed if we are not included in USA as fellow Americans. Presidential election in 2008 has a racial issue and we hope to have a new president to represent interests of all Americans.

The Sino-American economic relations including Olympic Games in Beijing, China in 2008 should deserve the favorable attention of all nations in the world for international competition in sports, not politics for Western nations to be aware the humanity of sports in all fairness.

My reactions may be expressed in the following Pin Yin system of romanization to be understood by those who know the Chinese language and those students who would be interested in the following idioms for learning happening with the description of the language of art and music in the light vein for engagement, enrichment or entertainment in good humor:

US Mint launches 24-Karat Gold for collectors

Director of US Mint Edmund Moy,an American of Chinese ancestry said "In many Asian cultures, there is a tradition of buying gold for loved ones to show how much you care for them. The lucky connotations of 2008 made it the right year to celebrate with a 24-Karat gold bullion coin."

To protect their pristine finish, the coins are packaged in the required protective covering and placed in a bright red plush US Mint gift box with a specially decorated red sleeve. A custom designed certificate of authenticity is enclosed, featuring the signature and chop mark of Director Moy. Presidential Candidate Obama's ideas for turning the economy

Austan Goolsbee, a professor of economics at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business is senior economic adviser to Sen. Barack Obama's campaign:
The next President would immediately take three steps apropos of ordinary Americans in the real economy. To wit:

First,he would enact a comprehensive plan to help bring an end to the foreclosure crisis that threatens millions of families. He would create a new FHA Housing Security Program to provide significant incentives and guarantees for lenders to buy out mortgages that exceed the value of homes and convert them into stable 30-year fixed-rate mortgages that homeowners can afford.

Second, Obama would make sure that folks can have income via marketable skills. This plan would fund our desperate need for such investment of jobs development program and a job skills program to improve workforce. These can help prevent devastating job losses in manufacturing and construction especially. My comment: "Keys for Economic Understanding" would be a useful reference for job training under apprenticeship programs plus "Work and Study Cycle Theory" to be validated and implemented for updating and upgrading the labor force in the United States. Both academic references may be searched at www.ask.com.

Third, Obama's priority is to make sure that a housing crisis does not happen again. Bad behavior in the mortgage market should be avoided and installing the responsible oversight of credit markets that has been lacking on mortgages and credit cards which threaten to metastasize into the next version of the mortgage crisis. It also means increasing people's savings so they have something to fall back on when things go wrong; enacting long-run savings program would give virtually every worker in America's a portable pensiion savings account. Here I would refer to the Confucian philosophy that has influenced the tradition and customs of peoples in Asia. Such moral behavior maybe noticed in China,Japan and Korea with frugal lifestyle to be reflected in the high saving rate.

American economy and financial system face some serious challenges. Barack Obama is confident we can meet these challenges the way America always has - by coming together to ensure that our economy works for every working American.

Details are published by the Washington Post,March 24, page A13. I would detect the meeting ground of the East and the West in Sino-American Economics in particular. Both nations can learn from each other for mutual benefit. Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao, a devoted student to study comparative economics. March 25,2008 at 7.25 a.m.

SEQUEL: The debt crisis in USA

Wall Street Journal, March 24, 2008 Page C1: The budget has been in deficit for most of the past two decades. However, central banks(including China's CPB) have been financing the profligate spending of US consumers by snatching up Treasury bonds keeping interest rate low. Easter is a movable feast and economics is in a state of flux with problems of fluid liquidity(sic)to describe the state of the economy today!
Americans are carrying $2.5 trillion in non-mortgage debt. Consumer debt excluding loans backed by real estate, has nearly doubled in the past. Financing cars for three years is so passe(outmoded); we finance them for six or seven. And now we buy houses with pick your payment mortgages. We are leveraged from here to China. U.S. consumers spend more than 14% of their after-tax income just to stay current on household debt. Why do we love leverage so much that it hurts? The answer is that we want more money more house, more car, just more, more, more. We often think we deserve more. Leverage gets us more. With historically low interest rates, leverage is the easiest and quickest tool to get more stuff. Should we blame our brains?

Americans spent 10.8% of their after-tax money on servicing debt back in 1982, when the federal funds rate was 14.5%. But as interest rates declined, making money cheaper, our debt- and the amount we pay to stay current - shot up peaking in 2006, when interst rates were at 5.3%. Mark Zandi ,chief economist of Moody's Economy.com said:"Like any other product, it its price falls, households will consumer more of it." "Rates fall, so households take on more debt." My comment: When FED reduces the interest rate down further to try to avoid recession, the amount of debt would be increasing to rekindle inflation. That is stagflation as I sent my blogs in the past to reinforce such rationale. Jason Zweig said:"The only way we will change from a borrowing and spending society to a savings society is if people can motivate themselves to think concretely about the future. But it doesn't come naturally. That is a muscle you have to buld up with exercise.(sic)? My comment: "Enjoy now and pay later" has been the busswords for decades and it is difficult or impossible to change the lifestyle of folks in the USA. I trust that the readers would be able to envision US-China relations in a mutually interwoven link in the 21st century with insights! Thanks for reading such analytical observations in a nutshell.

Education shapes up our mind with pep and vigor

Be cheerful and jovial and act in accordance with our intuition and common sense. Stay focused and take care of ourselves in essential to our good-hearted humor. Have creativity and courage.

We need a commitment to excellence apropos of indefinable goal to propel us for achievement to make contributions with highest standards. Such hallmark of excellence manifests itself in imaginative and creative solutions to daily problems. We can be attracted to have a vision that challenges the intellect and offers a rigor of purpose in life.

Imagination is more meaningful than knowledge. Knowledge may be restricted but imagination encircles the world of vision. It would be desirable to have unquenchable spirit of ingenuity and innovation.

Middle income American family made $45,000 in 2006

Washington Post,March 21, 2008 Page A1 Headline and C Span Radio reported that middle class Americans are shrinking due to high cost of living. Cf. March 13, 2008 blog for the same rationale. The fact that inflation is being driven by commodities has made it tricky for the FED as it tries to prevent the downturn from becoming a deep recession. The interest rate cuts have contributed to decline in the value of the dollar, which is one reason for higher prices. The forecasts that prices for fuel and food will level off in 2008 but that could prove wrong. Time will tell as we are watching the developments. Greenspan said in his book released in 2007, "The Age of Turbulence," that the suborime boom would boost home ownership and was worth the risk. Ponder and reflect such judgment and learn the present status of US economy. There is inflation in China as well and Chinese economy is being contracted to restrain the rate of growth. It is a known fact that the middle class has been expanding in China. We are certainly aware of economic interdependence in the name of globalization to be intermingled by Sino-American economics. Such evidence is clear by virtue of realities of mutual benefit. March 23, 2008.

1. Would discrimination be regarded as violation of human rights when the right of an American citizen is denied to earn a living in the United States?

2. The photos are shown on TV with looting, killing, beating and robbery as evidence of violation of law and order in Tibet. Such acts are opposed to the spirit of religion. Nobody would demur such unlawful activities. Any other views?

3. Dalai Lama declared that he would resign as a spiritual leader if there is violence according to the press release. But he is still active in politics as a religious leader. I am baffled about such behavior. Would our leaders condone the leader of organized violence as shown in the newspaper?

4. China plays an important role for 6-nation talks apropos of nuclear issue in North Korea and any distorted reaction toward China would not be in the best interest for peace in East Asia.

5. Any negative interpretation or to the extent of provocation to China's rightful response to violence would be inimical to the best interest of the United States for peace and economic development in the 21st century.

On page A25: Patrick French wrote:"How the Dalai Lama and his Western fans have hurt Tibetans. The present protests supported from overseas will bring only more suffering to the people in Tibet." Should we be concerned about the sufferings of folks in Tibet when there is violence? Food for thought for readers.

New World Order: Why America is losing (continued)

The Second World: Why America is losing the race to influence the "second world." By Parag Khanna, director a global governance initiative at the New America Foundation,a serious scholar. His contribution remains to be seen after election.

Khanna contends that the United States no longer seems to know what it wants because its foreign policy elite is utterly divorced from citizens' concerns. "Leaders are keen for the United States to fight more wars, push for free trade, and allow mass immigration, while the majority of Americans want fewer military interventions, less foreign aid, immigration restrictions, and some form of protectionism for American jobs and industries." These issues are controversial as the very nature of economics.

America's putative decline has been stressed by Presidential candidate Obama who is a pundit or a mavin. He is smart, capable and experienced in many fields. By acknowledging that race matters in this election, we can move forward to a future where race does not matter hopefully in the 21st century.

The Second World by Parag Khanna Random House.466pp. $29

Reviewed by Charles Gati who is teaching at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. Published by Book World,Washington Post on Sunday,March 23, 2008. I am greatly impressed by such a penetrating and scholarly assessment.

"To most Americans, small is not beautiful. We like being Number One. We take pride in a military that is second to none. We boast that Wall Street drives the world's financial markets (even if it's downward); that American scientists win more Nobel Prizes than anyone else; that our universities draw scholars and students from around the globe; that our symphony orchestras match Europe's best; and of course, that Hollywood films suspend disbelief everywhere." Such line of reasoning is very true from my own observations for decades as a graduate student in USA since 1947.

The India-born author Parag Khanna says yes and yes. In this fact-filled volume full of pithy observations and summaries, he identifies three relativeely equal centers of influence: Washington, Brussels, and Beijing. He is not the first to argue that the European Union and China have become our competitors for global influence. I agree with the reviewer's analysis in toto. In Central Asia, his interlocutors see Chinese influence on the rise; in Central and Eastern Europe, they see the growing power of the European Union. "Strong arms and strongmen cannot mask America's relative decline," Khanna argues, since they are the chief symbols of it. In addition to stressing that American power has declined, Khanna also says we're not very smart at using the power we still have. China impresses the second world with its astonishing economic progress and political fortitude. The European Union impresses with its ability to build consensus among both its members and its eager applicants. While the anti-Americanism he observes is therefore real enough, it is arguably more a reaction to the Bush administration's foreign policy and we-know-everything-better-than-anyone-else mindset than to the reality and promise of America.

In "Second Chance" Zbigniew Brzezinski's insightful study published last year, the former national security adviser suggested that the United States could bounce back and regain lost ground if new leaders emerge who are mature enough to accept global diversity, and who treat foreign friends with circumspection and adversaries with a modicum of tolerance. If this were to happen in the next few years, Khanna's book would become obsolete. If it does not happen, the book will be among those that warned, correctly, of the ending of the American era.

My comment: Such review of the reviewer appears to be in the same visible spotlight from the speeches by a Presidential candidate and I would expect to see peace and economic development of nations after the change of American leadership without any conflict for the well-being of humankind in the 21st century.

The White Man's Burden by William Easterly,Prof.of Economics

On page 353: China now accounts for about 70% of American imports of women's shoes. New York Yankees baseball cap - made in China, clock radio,USB Flash Drive for computer and laptop computer et al. were all made in China.

A former teacher in China gave up her teaching to make socks at home. She is a millionaire as the owner of Zhejiang Socks. She is more interested in money rather than education but she has the freedom to do so in China now.

Page 354: China handed out public land, gave tax breaks, and built transport infrastructure to encourage private enterprises with the most remarkable success. Nations are reliant on trade with China in globalization in the 21st century.

It is an unconventional homegrown achievement ignoring to follow any Western blueprint. My comment: It is the empirical evidence of success under China's market system.

The author of the book got a card from his former student at Wuhan University in China that had the bracing message "Improve oneself, promote perseverence, seek truth, and make innovations" Such motto would fit into the economic model for economic growth in China and in USA as well.

Page 355: "To be sure, the ultimate economic test of a society is not rapid growth but attaining a high level of income. China's per capita income is still only 1/6 of that in the USA" Economist Easterly's view may be referred to the SEQUEL about the Purchasing Power Parity as I sent my previous blogs for understanding.

The ultimate test of economic success is the contribution which economic activity has made to the goal of human happiness. To wit in Pin Yin system of romanization:

"Dushu" i.e. studying all the time to validate and to implement "Work and Study Cycle Theory" Cf. www.ask.com

"Jiaoshu" i.e. teaching is learning twice to improve one's understanding the truth.

Ex-Chairman Greenspan says FED policies didn't cause woes

Washington Post, March 21, 2008 page D1: Many economists blame Greenspan for lax bank supervision and for keeping interest rates too low, too long from mid-2003 to mid-2004. That, the theory goes, fueled the housing bubble nd spawned subprime and adjustable rate mortgages for common people, vast number of whom can't make their payments now. Banks bought those mortgages in bundles that are worth far less than they originally were. That has led to big write-offs shaking the entire financial system. Greenspan said that a market crisis was inevitable. "If it weren't the subprime crisis it would have been something else. That is because an era was ending that had seen disinflationary forces from developing nations such as China and a protracted period in which there was an underpricing of risk."(sic) I would stress the federal budget deficit(due to the War since 2003?) and trade deficits(more imports, less exports). Moreover, the lifestyle of the people must be taken into consideration. Not all economists are ready to let the former FED chairman off so easily. Please be the judge to evaluate the current financial turmoil in USA. Professor John K. Galbraith made a negative comment in an interview about Greenspan in "Keys for Economic Understanding."( 1976) with his insightful wisdom. My comment: Greenspan is more inclined for private interest instead of public interest with the background as an investment banker. Inflation Hitting Basics Harder than Luxuries as the headline in Washington Post,March 21, 2008 Page A1: Prices for groceries, gas and health care -things folks need - are rising faster than items they can cut back on. Inflation is also high in China lately. We shall watch the policies from the leaders to work for the interest of ordinary folks hopefully. A More Honest Socialism as an Editorial in WashPost,3/20/08: US wants to socialize he housing market as it seems eager to do and on the federal budget as the issue today published in a leading newspaper in USA.

USA appears to be interested in Socio-Economics and China has the market system with Chinese characteristics.

Facts and Fallacies by Thomas Sowell, economist

The newly-published work by Thomas Sowell. Basic Books,New York in 2008 $26.00

On page 6, China and India have been striking examples of poor nations whose abandonment of severe international trade and investment restrictions led to dramatic increases in their economic growth rates, which in turn led to tens of millions of their citizens rising out of poverty.

Page 170: Sequel to Discrimination: "Bias, prejudice, and discriminatin are often lumped together, as if they were pretty much the same thing. But bias and prejudice are attitudes - things inside people's heads - while discrimination is an overt act taking place outside, in the real world." I am aware of such discrimination when two tenured faculty members with American citizenship of Chinese ancestry had to leave the same college in 1983 and 1984 after 17 and 18 years of successful teaching economics. Such evidence is clear in the minds of the readers. I believe so.

Page 198: "Real incomes per capita in Switzerland is more than 40 times that of Afghanistan, while the real income per capital of the USA is 50 times that of Afghanistan. The list of wide disparities goes on and on. However, some of these statistics need to be taken with a grain of salt." What about the lifestyles of folks in different countries? I published articles in the Atlantic Economic Journal in 1970s to raise the same query about the standard of living in the US and China apropos of customs and culture that are not to be measured in quantitative data. Economist Larry Summers published his article re purchasing power parity in the same rationale in the 1990s to endorse such valid challenges in re the standard of living.

Washington Post,March 18, 2008 on page A19: Alan Blinder is an economics professor at Princeton. He wrote:" Earth to the White House and Congress: The FED cannot do this job alone. Such thought is the same as Ken Rogoff of Harvard University. "The economy is limping, but it is not collapsing. Patient investors who don't need liquidity and don't have to worry about mark-to-market accounting have a chance to be the J.P. Morgans of our day. Americans must set aside their pride and/or these companies still paying large dividends and enormous bonuses to their top executives? The Treasury should intervene currency market in concert with other nations." Here we can detect US-China economic relations and US economic relations with other nations as well. "Bernanke can do it better than Paulson." My comment: There is a fine connection of the Treasury and the FED when we delve into such relationship. GOLD: The once and future money by Nathan Lewis

Nathan Lewis runs a hedge fund with his vested interest! We are encountering the surge of inflation, and the need for change would intensify. Perrhaps we need to return to commodity system, such as metals and antiques to bring history alive as valuable investments.

It may be tautology that the fall of US Dollar is reflected in the decline of political and economic clout of USA.

There is an ad in WORTH magazine.www.socialinvest.org Such association is dedicated to advancing the concept, practice and growth of socially and environmentally responsible investing. I would envision that the common ground of USA and China falling into the same category or working for the same goal in the 21st century. Eleemosanary efforts are designed to return to less fortunate folks in any society and such objectives are obvious in the minds of leaders for society's harmony. We celebrate wealth but will support the middle class as the backbone in USA and in China as well.

Optimality in Economic Science: Price-Placebo Effect

Washington Post, March 17, 2008 Page A3 apropos of Medial orbitofrontal Cortex:

This part of the brain makes judgments about pleasure, and intriguing new research has found that the price people pay for something can subtly and unconsciously change how much pleasure they derive from it." Baba Shiv, a Stanford University behavioral economist, who was part of a team of researchers who studied the medial orbitofrontal cortex. Along with California Institute of Technology neuro-economist Antoniio Rangel and others, Shiv had people evaluate two bottles of wine, priced at $10 and $90. What the volunteers did not realize was that the wine in the expensive and cheap bottles was the same. The expensive wine was better merely because they figured it ought to be better. My comment: It is a matter of perception and reception with the personal attitude to glorify price. Such mindset or state of mind may be applied to Sino-American Economics e.g. An American lives in China for a simple lifestyle versus a Chinese with high-roller living in USA. Such circumstances may be labeled as "Price-Placebo Parity" as I would ponder and reflect with the utility effect of price-placebo parity.

Peace and tranquility from intellectual equanimity

The global financial market is in turmoil but we do have faith, hope and charity in a much healthier way to resist such downward trend with our confidence. My state of mind may be traced back to my schooling in China and in the USA since 1930s. I have been influenced to think about human mortality with M on our palm and reason the value of our life for a specific purpose. We do expect changes as meaningful experience. Good intentions are better than ill will toward others. Such effort is truly worthy of note. When we change our attitude,we change our world with our intellect and holy spirit on daily basis. By looking at our paper currency, we disccover that they are papers but we have confidence in our currency. The bottom line is our own mindset if we want to live happily, we must realize that it is not material consumption only but intellectual pursuit and spiritual satisfaction plus good health. All the intangibles are true assets and we must cherish such heritage from our educational background. We salute such with great pride. Living joyfully in this world, we must seek our spiritual kingdom eventually after our transient stay in this mundane world. Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao on Monday,March 17, 2008

"Daydream Believers" and "Three Trillion Dollar War"

What is the Tab? Two economists attempt to calculate the price of US intervention in Iraq: "The Three Trillion Dollar War" By Joseph E. Stiglitz and Linda J. Bilmes. The authors should be commended - not disparaged for their painstaking work. Carlos Lozada reviewed the book with the penetrating conclusion:"In one way or another, we will be paying for these costs, today, next year, and over the coming decades - in higher taxes, in public and private investments that will have to be curtailed, in social programs that will have to be cut back," they write."One cannot fight a war, especially a war as long and as costly as thhis war, without paying the price." My comment: Can we ponder and put our mind at ease if we are taxpayers with insightful thoughts? It is high time that we can elect a new President to reorder priorities for the best interest of the American people after November 2008.

Common Problems for USA and China. Study at Georgetown University

1. Inflation: Leaders in USA and in China are trying to curb the rate of inflation emanating from energy cost(utilities and crude oil et al.),food prices and rising health care etc. There is no easy solution or pat answer but it would be necessary to take measures with varied rules and regulations to mitigate such circumstances.

2. Recession or slowdown: Shhh...Don't say 'recession' Maybe slowdown?(sic) Both nations are suffering under unfavorable conditions nowadays.

3. Chinese brokerage might cancel deal to invest $1 billion in Bear Stearns but would be interested in the Asia-Pacific region and the Middle East. USA would have the same interest to invest in Asia-Pacific region and the Middle East. USA and China are on both sides of the Pacific in terms of propinquity and globalization.

4. A slowdown may be the blessing for pawnshops in USA and in China for folks who need the money in a jiffy.

Watching the applied economics in action:USA & China

In USA: Economic crisis grew from too-free lending: The Commerce Department reported that Americans are spending less now as the result of decreasing value of houses plus high energy prices such as Gas price in Hawaii $4.40 a gallon as per the radio broadcast. Stocks are down today as well. Folks in USA feel having less wealth but paying high cost of living. President Bush is aware of such tough time in the economy but he still believes that the economy will be OK after his stimulus plan (growth package)by this fall after Americans get rebate checks from Treasury. Such medicine may be difficult to swallow for most folks. Rhetoric? Political necessity of oficial optimism? We shall find out the facts in the second half of 2008.

Page D3: David Rosenberg, chief economist at Merrill Lyunch: "We had a dramatic overextention of credit and consumption growth for a long time. In a survey by Wall Stree Journal, 71% of economists said they thought the economy was in recession. I endorsed such view in my past blogs. REASON: The lifestyle of borrowing on credit has caused the current happenings of stagflation.

In China: On page A13: President Hu has a plan to streamline government and would create new superministries to reduce overlapping bureaucracies. Hoping for the best for management of the economy.

On page C12: China reportedly has spent $17 billion to ease smong in and around Beijing. Starting in July, vehicle traffic in the city will be reduced by almost half. Satisfied that conditions are imroving, Britich athletes will not wear special masks when competing in Olympic Games in China.

My observation: Fluctuations in the private sector would require the clout of the public sector to take action. However,a market economy is supposed to be free and the outcome has been in evidence as we are witnessing today. Any scenarios would depend on future empirical evidence in economics.

John Rodderick;AP correspondent captured a changing China

John Rodderick passed away at the age of 93. He spent his last days in Honolulu,Hawaii, the Paradise of the Pacific. Hawaii is the meeting ground of the East and the West. China, Korea and Japan were named as the nations in the Far East but if we are aware that America's day starts in Guam, then we would deem the "Near West" to describe the nations on the other side of the Pacific. There is another way of saying that if you go east all the way, you'll end up in the west due to the fact that the earth is round. It is smart thinking! When I lived in California several decades ago, folks say back east to mean the east coast but China, Korea and Japan have traditional been regarded as the nations in the Far East. How would you reconcile such? Your sharp reasoning would be invited for such seemingly baffled directions.(sic) Hehehahahoho all the way and we shall live to be centenarians.

In his book,"Covering China," he had his vision that the most populous nation would rule the world. He said:"I admired the fact that they were trying to do something for the poor Chinese" Such goal is being implemented by the leaders in China nowadays. John Roderick became the consummate China watcher as a native of Maine and orphaned at 16. In 2006, he began a series of monthly China-related articles on the Beijing 2008 Olympics. Here is the testimony of an established American journalist who truly loved China. Needless to say,his contributions to US-China relations left immense influence on Sino-American economics yesterday, today and tomorrow.

On page A2: 75 years ago, Roosevelt was reassuring but March 12,2008 Reid was depressing apropos of the status of the American economy at present.

In USA: The Majority leader Reid announced:"We've got to get middle class Americans tax cuts; we've got to give people the ability to be educated no matter how much money their parents have." In line of such rationale, the opportunity to have education and training for folks to have marketable skills via the role of community colleges would be significant for American economic development. For reference: "The Future of Community Colleges" published by the Congressional Record, July 18, 1974.

In China: CCTV-4 reports the 11th Conference of the Chinese People Congress nowadays concerning the recommendations by delegates to allocate more funding to be available for the poor students especially in rural areas.

Such is the common goal of Sino-American economics in the days to come for economic development from the grassroots as the very bottom lines for USA and China.

Common Goal for USA and China:March 13,08 WashPost

Washington Post,March 13, 2008 on page A13: Taiwan Referendum Faces Boycott: US and China have denounced the referendum as a needlessly provocative maneuver, designed by Chen Shui-bian and his DPP to emphasize the self-ruled island's claim to formal independence from China. Such maneuver is in opposition to Chinese history, tradition and culture of the Chinese folks on both sides of Taiwan straits. Moreover,Chinese in every nook and corner would be against such maneuver for the sovereignty of China,a member of the Security Council of the United Nations.

US State Department has dropped China from its list of human rights violation. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 is designed to remove the ugly traces of discrimination of minorities which may be regarded as a violation of human rights to earn a living in USA. Moreover, such discrimination has been cited as one of the campaign issues for the election of the President of the United States in November 2008. Furthermore, economics textbooks have cited such unfair treatment to educate students of economics to be aware of such inequities which is not inline with the Constitution of USA for all Americans to have the right to earn a living in America as American citizens.

OPEC's Triumph like a true Cartel

Washington Post, March 12, 2008 page A19: Since 1999, annual oil revenue for OPEC natons has more than quadrupled, to an estimated $670 billion in 2007, says energy economist Philip Verleger Jr. What is less clear is whether OPEC has merely benefited from tight oil markets or has acted as a true cartel, restricting output and raising prices. My comment: The answer maybe nebulous at best. A cartel is a group of sellers of a product who have joined together to control its production, sale, and price in the hope of obtaining the advantages of monopoly. An example of the formation of a cartel is the OPEC which began to make decisions in unison in the 1970s. History may repeat and time will tell!? Dependence on oil imports, almost 60% of US supply, is inevitable. But we could limit OPEC's market power by curbing our demand and increasing our supply.(sic) A weaker global economy may dampen demand. Whatever happens, the long term threat of a global oil cartel will remain. I am inclined to agree with Robert J. Samuelson's conclusion.

Crude oil hits record,Pump prices keep rising

Washington Post, March 11, 2008 on pages D1 and D4: Last week, Goldmdan Sachs raised its forcast for 2009 US crude oil prices to #105 a barrel but it was $109 on March 11, 2008 already! Democrats seized on the price increaes to hammer President Bush for his threat to veto an energy tax bill that would eliminate a tax break for the five biggest oil firms and extend tax breaks for solar and wind projects. Analysts blamed the relentless increases in petroleum prices on an influx of investors fleeting sinking and unsteady financial markets and those searching for hedges against inflation. To me,it is a matter of speculation. Who knows the future for sure? As consumers,we are subject to the so-called law of demand and supply or rather the manipulation of some who have the clout to call the shots? The readers can have your own scenarios. Thanks to you to share my thoughts and have a cheerful day to be on earth in this world to witness the happenings. The following is published from the views of educators in economics:

Joseph E. Stiglitz, an economics professor at Columbia University and Linda Bilmes at Harvard University: E-mails: linda_bilmes@harvard.edu jes322@columbia.edu "It is a bleak picture. The total loss from economic downturn measured by the disparity between the economy's actual output and its potential output- is likely to be the greatest since the Great Depression. That total, itself well in excess of $1 trillion, is not included in our estimated $3 trillion cost of the war in Iraq."(page B4 of OUTLOOK,Washington Post,March 9, 2008. C-Span Radio on March 11, 2008 Obama's Speech

Presidential Candidate Senator Obama gave an inspiring speech in Mississipi and I was greatly impressed by his insightful eloquence with dedicated vision. He pointed out the significance of education including apprenticeship program for teacher training with a marketable skill as desideratum for USA. "Keys for Economic Understanding" is addressed to the training of skills. Cf. www.ask.com or www.Amazon.com for reference. Moreover,he mentioned the importance of community, "The Future of Community Colleges" published by the Congressional Record,July 18, 1974 with the same rationale for economic development from the grassroots. I do not claim to have vision for my publications because I am still a lifelong student in the field of economics. Furthermore, Senator Obama cited China with more cars to generate pollution. It is high time that energy policy should be developed to reduce pollution in the USA and in China as well. Is is good to learn that Shanghai has produced All-Electric Buses for public transportation to reduce pollution. American scientists and engineers would be able to collaborate with Chinese counterparts to work for the best interest of people on earth in the 21st century re globalization. In my previous blog, I included an open letter from Senator Obama's half sister to imply Senator's interest to work with China if he is nominated and elected as the President of the United States in November 2008. Any cooperation and collaboration of two great nations would be beneficial for folks on both sides of the Pacific since both USA and China are Pacific nations as neighbors. SEQUEL to Business Week,March 10th issue, the ISSUE.

The ISSUE of threat to the economy creates a transatlantic rift with impact of transpacific cooperation and collaboration as I would envision apropos of Sino-American economics in the 21st century for mutual benefit in terms of globalization.

The divergence in approaches on either side of the Atlantic is likely to stoke tensions. Americans resent Europeans for not sharing the burden of stimulating the world economy, forcing them into unilateral action. Europeans resent Americans for blundering foolishly ahead, exacerbating inflation. For years there has been an unhealthy imbalance in the world economy, with the United States contributing disproportionately to the growth in demand and doing too little in the way of saving. The response to the current economic mess increases that lopsidedness. Americans are spending heavily to head off the risk of recession while Europeans cose their wallets.

Think about nations in Asia especially Chinese lifestyles in terms of saving. American must pay more attention to Asia since United States in both an Atlantic nation and an Asia-Pacific nation as well for the US economy as a whole in the macroview.

Home equity below 50% level. Falling prices sap(undermine) owners' wealth. Such equity for the average American has dropped below 50% for the first time since WWII.
It has broader implications for consumer spending in the sputtering, up a paltry(trivial) rate of 0.6% in the last quarter as per the released data.(sic)
"Consumers are more cautious because they are worth less" Mark Zandi, chief economist for Moody's Economy.com. Moreover, they cannot borrow against their homes as they did before as the way of life on credit.
My comment: Live frugally and spiritually. If we make comparisons with folks in the developing nations,we could dampen our desires as they do. Furthermore, true happiness may be obtained via intellectual pursuit with good health instead of material consumption only as our lifestyle. To reiterate my recommended "Equation of Happiness": Published in Shanghai's World Economic Journal and Hunan Science and Technology Publisher in 1981 and 1990 respectively.
Happiness is not material consumption as numerator over desire as denominator in a "fraction" Cf. Scientists proved a link between stress and disease in the early half of the last century. Since then, researchers have examined old and new practices including biofeedback, meditation, guided imagery, spiritual healing and deep breathing. The fast-expanding field of psychoneuroimmunology, which examines how the neurological and immune system interact, is providing new clinical evidence of the connection between thoughts and health. At least 30% of treatments work because we believe they will. There is ample evidence that negative thoughts and feelings can be harmful to the body. Medicine Program at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston Stress is known to be a factor in heart disease, headaches, asthma and many other illnesses.

Music is universal: US-China/Sino-American economics of music

Music is loved by kids and adults alike to please our ears in USA or in China.

Human voices are meant to express fear or joy even birds could chirp to make music.

A rhythm is a pattern. Folks made clapping sounds with hands or pieces of stone may be used to scrape rhythms on shells. Drums were used for fighting in China or American Indians would do the same to fight invaders.

China language is a form of music with four tones. Chinese calligraphy is a form of art especially the cursive writing as a part of simplified Chinese characters.

The joke about nervous violins may be high-strung! When monkeys play in the orchestra,it would be a chimphony. Phooey or fake symphony indeed.

March 8th is the Festival for women in China but the entire month of March is Women's history in USA.

A healthy lifestyle is maintained by President Bush,Senior

The 21st century is truly expeditionary, so it is imperative we are all prepared to meet challenges. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is often the first step to acomplishing this goal. A healthy lifestyle not only boosts energy level, endurance and reduces stress in every day duties. A healthy former President Bush is visiting China to state categorically that Olympic Games would be competition apropos of sports among nations and politics should not be intruded for such events. As we are aware of Civil Rights Act of 1964 to honor the rights of minorities in America. Moreover, such citation is listed in economics textbooks to educate students in USA. Discrimination is the violation of human rights and such unfair bias has been stressed by candidates of campaign in 2008 to try to remove such inequities and to strive for a better America with the true spirit of democracy. Let us wait and see the outcome of the will of the people after election in November 2008 and beyond with positive scenario.

USA/China: Common goal for peace in Taiwan straits

Washington Post,March 6, 2008 page A17:

U.S.,China resigned to Taiwan Vote: Both put hope in citizens rejecting controversial measure:
The Bush administration repeatedly has used strong language to oppose the vote, in public statements as well as private diplomatic contacts. Officials have condemned the referendum as an attempt to inch beyond the long-standing arrangement under which Taiwan functions as an independent country but has a consitituion that leaves its status undefined and retains Republic of China as its formal name. Secretary of State Rice repeated the U.S. opposition during a visit in Beijing, calling the referendum provocative and a bad idea. The United Nations has already rebuffed efforts by Chen's government to gain recognition of the name Taiwan when it takes part in UN activities. Taiwan is not a UN member; it will not be admitted to the United Nations under any name. Ma and allies won a decisive victory in the legislative vote from Democratic Progressive Party's Frank Hsieh. American and Chinese officials hope Ma's pragmatic views would lower tensions and smooth the way for better relations across the strait.

"The Trillion Dollar Meltdown" with insights, indeed

Easy Money, high rollers and the great credit crash By Charles R. Moore,a lawyer and a former banker. Public Affairs, New York. 2008 $22.95

We are encountering the most reckless financial world. The astronomical leverage at large banks and their hedge fund and private equity clients realistically generates massive disruption in global markets.
The arcane and esoteric financial institutions, the chicanery, the erroneous policies, the delusions that caused the credit bubble in the name of globalization.
Wall Street's prosperity tilted into over abundance of excessive blunders. The US$ has been debased and stock market has been shattered. Concealment and downplaying by leaders will beget the crises to more crises for the short run to the long run. My comment: I hope such scenario would be an error because we are in the same boat!
International economics has been put on the edge to be reflected in political economy in the 21st century. Economics in action with politics, indeed!

The rise of Sovereign Wealth Funds(SWF)
Qatar has stake in the British banks such as HSBC and Standard Chartered and in European Air Bus.
Chinese funds are reportedly in negotiation with American private equity firms such as Carlyle Group which has been a high-priced retirement home for notables like George H.W. Bush, James Baker, John Major(Page 102)
The creation of the Chinese SWF by itself will raise US interest rates by half %, just by the implied diversion of fkunds that previously flowed into US Treasuries. (page 104)
The French middle classes have smaller houses and cars than American peers, but better diets, considerably more leisure time and much more economic security.

The interplay of the slumping dollar and rising oil price has turned one economic dynamic upside down. Just when a weak economy might cause oil prices to slump, they're rising instead, sapping more money from the pockets of already strapped consumers. My comment: That may be one of the reasons that American consumers prefer to buy Chinese products for less cost. Freedom of American consumers to save money leads to trade deficits. But consumer sovereignty must be protected. "China's trade surplus with the E.U. surged by 42% and E.U. leaders are facing increased pressure over rising imports of low-cost Chinese textiles, shoes and other goods that European producers say are detrimental to their businesses." Well, consumers in E.U. should have the same freedom to save money by buying Chinese products with less cost. Any other scenarios? Thanks to you in advance for your views. Francis Shieh a.k.a. Look at China whose economic success was not achieved by accident, but through national policies promoting targeted economic growth.

A smaller but resource rich region,Jilin Province in NE China, the government is pursuing a comprehensive plan to create 10,000 mostly small and medium size firms each year through 2009, hoping to create 100,000 new jobs. The rationale is that China's smaller businesses drive economic growth, employing about 75% of all urban employees, holding about 60% of all invention patents and accounting for about 80% of new products.

Small and medium firms do need para-professionals,training and education would be needed to train employees in the days to come. In this regard,"Keys for Economic Understanding" is hereby dedicated for such businesses.

How the weighty buck conquered the world and why it is under siege. By Craig Karmin, Wall Street Journal Reporter. Crown Business. New York 2008 #25.95
Any threat to the dollar's status would do much more than hurt American pride. For the first time there is the prospect of another currency to rival the US$. Economists see the euro, and eventually the Chinese yuan playing increasingly important roles in the global economy. (page 6) US cannot change the dynamics that lead central banks to diversity their holdings. In China, the CPB,i.e. China People's Bank in Beijing. In Korea, people request Chinese yuan as often as they do US Dollars. Why? American credit crisis, a slowing economy and ballooning debt.
Overall,FX Concepts manage about $13 billion. China is holding FXR about 1.3 trillion. The currency market has daily trading volume of 3.2 trillion but average daily global stock market volume of about 300 billion. Law of Healthonomics: Passion for aesthetics in living

Thank you for reading the following and your feedback would be greatly appreciated.
How to be healthy without money? Credit! Haha! The best medicine may be humor in the light vein. Humor may be tricky, but if it is done in good taste that it would work nicely. Humor makes health care more light-hearted. Go to a happy place and help improve our attitudes with cheer. A coffee shop to have coffee can help seniors who drink several cups a day. They are less likely to leave this mundane world from heart disease according to a study fro SUNY Downstate Medical Center. Cf. Parade magazine,March 2, 2008 on page 18.
Homo economicus i.e. economic man does not understand human emotions like love, friendship or charity or even envy, hatred and anger. What about selfishness and greed? Do we have quirks and foibles? Do we plan, strategize, negotiate, and deal with the harsh realities of supply and demand? Such may be the law or the so-called?
Aesthetics is a branch of philosophy dealing with the principles of beauty in art. Chinese language is a form of art and music so if someone is devoted to the Chinese language,he/she is an artist to be able to appreciate aesthetics in life. Folks with knowledge of the Chinese language may be regarded as artists per se!

Chinese characters: Simplified and traditional

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Both traditional and simplified forms are taught at FSI because China has adopted the simplified form to popularize to the folks in China with good reasons but traditional form in Hong Kong and Taiwan for those who have learned the traditional form in the past. I studied the traditional form when I was a university student in China from 1943-46 but I was interested in the simplified form when I was doing research at The RAND Corporation, Santa Monica,California and published "A Glimpse of the Chinese Language" in English in 1965 for English-speaking folks to update about such changes. UN will adopt the simplified form for the visitors to be aware the simpfied form in China. United States: There is one China and Taiwan is a part of China. That is in the same line of reasoning as my studies in China from 1943-46 before 1949 re PRC.
