Farm Program as per Senator Lugar of Indiana

Washington Post,July 31, 2007 on page A18: Senator Richard G.Lugar: Current farm programs provide an untrustworthy safety net for America's farmers, as evidenced by Congress having to approve disaster aid payments to farmers every year since 1988. In fact, the current system, which is available to only 43% of American farmers, subsidizes consolidation in the agricultural economy and perpetuates cycles of commodity prices based on government price signals. I strongly favor programs that allow farmers to grow commodities based on market indicators, not on government dictated controls that still exist in outrageously expensive federal farm program. Such statement is useful for reference since China is basically an agricultural nation apropos of Sino-American Economics re China's market economy. Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao. Tea and Chocolate for all folks

Research shows that the answer depends on the way tea is decaffeinated. If caffeine is removed with a compound called ethyl acetate, only about 30% of the tea's healing polyphenois remain. It is believed polyphenois to fight cancer and heart disease. However, Chinese tea would be good in any situation if the person who drinks any tea has faith , hope and love. WE BELIEVE!Hehehahahoho all the way and we shall live to be centenarians before leaving this mundane world. Morever, if we indulge in chocolate candy, choose the dark of bitter sweet kind which has antioxidant compounds known as flavonoids keeping blood platelets from sticking together and forming clots, the cause of most heart attacks. It is a satisfying day to meet a polyglot of the highest caliber

It is wonderfully validating to know my instincts were right. Our class would be a collaboration between the top notch student and me. It is always a fabulous moment when I meet a person who is highly motivated. His intellect is absorbing quickly in Wu dialect (Shanghai) and Mandarin with instantaneous understanding of his native English. It is truly cool! His soulful evolution will discover new words and expressions in the Chinese language with Level 3 as the goal for Wu dialect.(Shanghai) In the next six weeks,I have reason to believe that such objective can be reached with facility and alarcrity.

Commentary by an inquisitive would-be economist

How to cope with global warming, peak oil, inequality, and a growing sense of isolation? Economists have missed a simple answer. We need to create in-depth ways and means for international independence and to sustain food and other human resources in the 21st century. What is the economy for? Aiming at the wellbeing of individuals and the societies as a whole? Both micro and macro views are to be watched thoroughly. The cult (devotion or admiration)of growth and globalization has been challenged by thoughtful thinkers. To have more may not be synonymous with betterment! On the contrary, the opposite may be realistic. Let us watch the developments in China and in USA to make comparisons in the days to come for comparative studies as lifelong students of economics for intellectual utility. Your input/feedback would be greatly appreciated. Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao on Monday, July 30, 2007 at 4.35 a.m.

ECONOMICS: "Discover Your Inner Economist" by Tyler Cowan. Publisher: Dutton.; 245 pp. $25.95 The author is an economics professor at George Mason University. Maybe the "Freakonomics," the best seller in 2005 is peaking as well with such craze. It is fun to use economic principles to unravel everyday riddles. But cutting edge researchers are going further, deploying the tools of psychology and neuroscience to probe economic behavior, using imaging technology to map our brains and understand how we invest, buy and save. That is freaky. My comment: Lifestyles of the Chinese folks in China, mostly farmers, are different from Americans in USA. That is cultural with tradition. As such, the behavior would be inscrutable for Westerners to comprehend. Xie Shihao, a graduate student from China for advanced studies since 1947 a.k.a. Francis Shieh. July 29, 2007

Enthusiastic teaching begets repeat students

Reflection for Teaching Methodology: My communication style is hold. This has its benefits. I am mindful to hold on to a certain coping mechanism out of habit. Let go and I'll become invulnerable. I conquer anything in order to be intellectually happy. Before I commit myself to any decision, I like to figure out the exact cost. Cost-Benefit analysis in economics, indeed. Economics is an inexact science

In spite of the stock market going down yesterday and the increasing cost of food and energy lately,Robert Fogel,Nobel Laureate in Economics comments: "This optimistic view of the impact of economic growth and technological change of human welfare is an antidote to the prophecies of an imminent age of gloom and doom." Economists on the loose by Prof.Williams of George Mason University

Washington Times, July 21, 2007 page A11: In economics departments, a growing will to debate fundamental assumptions. Cf. New York Times, July 11, 2007. For many economists, questioning free market orthodoxy is akin to expressing a belief in intelligent design at a Darwin convention: Those who doubt the naturally beneficial workings of the market are considered deluded or crazy. Criticisms of mainstream economists are viewed negatively. Economic planning is done by the powerful elite. The large majority of economists are solidly in the mainstream of mankind's traditional vision. My comment: Would lifestyle of the people in China is different from the habits of Americans? Should Sino-American economics be studied from the custom, tradition and culture of folks in China and in the United States? My rationale rests here for the readers to ponder with thoughts. Xie Shihao a.k.a. Francis Shieh. July 21, 2007 at 10.18 a.m.

Economists are devoted to economic science(natural law)

Re: Economics and economic theory, thinkers dominate the landscape on the scene. The thoughts, theories and lives of economists and others, ranging from the predecessors of Adam Smith, a moral philosopher as well in the 18th century to 20th century giants such as John M. Keynes and John K. Galbraith of Harvard in the West. The blogs will grasp the guiding principles of economics through a better understanding of the economists who developed them. In the broad span of time since the thinkers presented their ideas, economic issues and concerns have changed greatly but core economic doctrine remains. "Work and Study Cycle Theory" may be validated and implemented in the United States and in China, the West and the East to be merged for globalization apropos of all humanity. Such theory provides a fresh take on how various economic theories were formed and how subsequent economists fine-tuned those theories. Let us watch the happenings as empirical evidence to validate theories. Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao who has studied Confucianism with a taste of economic theories via education and philosophy of life to influence lifestyles of folks as the genuine substance of economics with customs and traditions as part and parcel of economics. Progress toward a long-held goal of putting ideas across

I take pleasure in many nonsensical and absurd occurrences. When my creativity is stymied, it's a sign to toss out the rules. My age is a mindset as a "xiaohuozi" feeling younger with passion to increase my search for knowledge to guarantee for happiness. Inside each of my goals is the answer to the meaning of my life. My tolerance of others paves the way for a cheerful day, everyday. I feel as though I have magical powers for inspiration. Lighten up my thoughts and steer my mind to sunny places with electricity return to my active life. I listen to views and go with my guts. I get a wink and a nod from my students with impressive joy in teaching and learning. Reflectons of my interest in Economics in USA

1. John K. Galbraith,Professor emeritus of Harvard published "Almost Everyone's Guide to Economics" I met him several times at RAND and PGCC and had the opportunity to review his book published by Atlantic Economic Journal in December 1979 with another article on "Equation of Exchange(Quantity Theory of Money)" in March 1980.
2. Richard T. Gill,Director for 9 years and taught at Harvard for two decades. I sent him numerous comments in his textbooks published in 1975, 1978 and 1980. He cited my work on the role of community colleges for economic development in the footnotes.
3. George Bach,Professor at Stanford for decades. I contributed to his textbooks in 1978, 1980 and 1983.
4. Milton Spencer,Ph.D. Cornell University. My name was cited in his textbooks in 1983 and my book entitled "Keys for Economic Understanding" was quoted in his textbook, 1977 edition.
5. Paul Romer, Stanford University Professor of Economics. I shared the same approach in teaching economic growth apropos of training. My papers entitled "Community College Education as a Source of Economic Development" is elaborated to such idea, published by the Congressional Record,July 18, 1974. "Macroeconomics of Stabilization" was published by the White House Conference on Balanced Economic Growth in August 1978. Such rationale was stressed in the State of the Union in 2004, 2005 including the statement by President Bush in July 2007 via CSpan Radio Broadcast.
6.G. William Miller, former Treasury Secretary and Federal Reserve Chairman commended for my work of labor productivity in his letter dated October 23, 1978.
7. Arthur F. Burns, former Chair of FED and Professor at Columbia University shared with my thoughts on human capital. He commented that I am on the right track in emphasizing structural problems. Monetary and fiscal policies do not function in a vacuum. Such reasoning is crystal clear re US-China / Sino-US economics.
8. Henry Paulson,Jr.,Treasury Secretary envisions positive US-China relations and I do admire his insights for the best interests of USA and China in the 21st century.

Longevity Rules for your kind reference

Our body and brain can last around 85 years and longer if the following rules are observed:
1. Handling stress: Shed stress easily, add 5 years i.e. to age 90 from being an octogenarian.
2. Exercising regularly: at least half an hour daily. No letdown.
3. Having good genes: A family member lives to be 90 or older. My uncle lived to be 99. add 5 years to be 95.
4. Brain boosting: Utilizing brain with cognitively challenging tasks such as words in Chinese and English languages. Add 5 more years to be a centenarian.
5. Eating right: Chinese food in the diet with lots of veggies and fruits.

An intuitive approach to render service to others

ALOHA to all, I am inspired to continue to create more of the blogs even if I don't know how I created it to start with. The wind is shifting. I could make a pal out of a former adversary. Friendship lasts forever i.e. ad infinitum

Through the vicissitude of life when we learn to care then our friendship endures like a flower that might wither in winter but blooms again in spring. When that happends, we know that we have found a friend that will hold a place in our heart forever - no matter how many miles there are between us and no matter how many years separate our ages. True friendship means caring with understanding. Francis Shieh on Sunday, July 15, 2007 at 7.52 p.m.

The Worldly Philosophers by Robert Heilbroner

Prof. John K. Galbraith of Harvard : "a brilliant Achievement" as his comment. My comments: The lives, times, and ideas of the great economic thinkers as philosophers in this mundane world. However, Vista of economics may be opened to brave souls who are economists that shape and sway the minds to be basked in brighter glory.(sic) Economists pursue an inquiry of intellectual fusspots to discover the roots of our society apropos of the welter of social patterns that economics discerned. Such seemingly unrelated threads may be woven into a single tapestry in a humdrum of a chaotic world with crying need for economic lore. Adam Smith was a professor of moral philosophy comparable to Confucius and Mencius. Karl Marx is a German Jew that you are familiar with in toto. Economics deals with imaginative, changing and evolving ideas and "Work and Study Cycle Theory" may be applicable to the 21st century to all folks. Empirical evidence would warrant such theory to be validated and implemented. The East and the West are one homosapiens on earth. Xie Shihao on Sunday, July 15, 2007 at 3.44 p.m.

Better teaching methodology with patience and fun

Compassion is a virtue to find a remarkable, positively life-changing answer with understanding. I am an impartial observer of both viewpoints apropos of a bit of sleuthing. Education is a bargain and I am humble, willing and eager to learn from all folks. Consequently, I can broaden my ideas about how topics should be packaged and delivered. Respect and deference would come by in due course of time! Making choices based on the assumption that things are going to work out and they will during the course of time. ECONOMIST magazine,July 13, 2007 Page 78

Neuroeconomics: Money isn't everything: Men with a lot of testosterone make curious economic choices. If another route brings that status more directly, money is irrelevant. Most economists of the classical persuasion believe that any financial gain is worth having. But psychologists know this is not true. My comment: Microeconomics deals with human behavior and psychology has bearing with human behavior as well. Such rationale may be the common ground of Sino-American economics in his/her own reasoning. Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao. July 14, 2007 at 3 p.m.

Equal opportunity to expose without exasperation

TIME magazine,July 23, 2007 issue INBOX: Rachel Endo, Omaha, Nebraska wrote: Have we selectively forgotten that mad-cow diseased beef and other tainted food products like bagged spinach and peanut butter originated on U.S. soil within the past few years? To pathologize China's industries as corrupt not only reeks of centuries old Yellow Peril rhetoric but also fails to acknowledge the shortcomings of transnational regulations. We must take responsibility for cleaning up our own backyard when demanding that others take care of theirs. My comment: Georgetown University professor Pietra Rivoli thinks that the importing firms should be responsible. I would say: Those who live in glasshouses should not throw stones with boomerang in return. Let us work together to get rid of corruption in the spirit of cooperation and collaboration for mutual benefits. Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao. July 14, 2007 at 2.35 p.m.

Plus and Minus of the American economy

Americans are striving to take risks with ambition. Economic insecurity for jobs is evident in the current scene. For most folks, income disparity involves material happiness in gaining goods and services. But if we dampen our desires,we can be happy indeed! In making comparisons, US ranks lower in happiness than Denmark, Ireland and Sweden but much higher than France, Germany and Italy. Folks cannot mandate euphoria as published by the Washington Post, July 11, 2007 n page A15. My comment: Mindset is very important for individuals. If we have positive attitude in all things,we can be happy mentally and spiritually. Such is my way of thinking for my daily living. Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao on July 14, 2007 at 9.45 a.m.

Macroeconomics of Stabilization

The above is published by the White House Conference on Balanced Economic Development in August 1978. Even though it was published in 1978 but economists are still searching for stabilization in the years to come. There is no pat answers to stabilization but it is an academic pursuit at best. Monetary and fiscal policies cannot operate in a vacuum and human capital approach must be stressed as I compared notes with Arthur Burns, the former Chairman of the FED decades ago. There is the common ground of Sino-American economics for human capital formation in the 21st century. "Keys for Economic Understanding" may be a timely reference to be searched by clicking at the Used Books at Borders Books. Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao. July 14, 2007 at 6 a.m.

The Future of Community Colleges

Congressional Record, July 18, 1974 published the above title. Richard T. Gill of Harvard University quoted such in his textbook in 1975 and such rationale was cited in the State of the Union message in 2004 and 2005. President Bush at CSpan radio mentioned the role of community colleges apropos of American economic developement from the grassroots a couple days ago. I was intellectually satisfied to learn that my analysis has been viewed in the same vein by Harvard economics professor and political leader in USA that I envisioned in 1970s. "Work and Study Cycle Theory"(1978) would reinforce such thoughts. Cf.www.ask.com for reference. Francis Shieh a.k.a. Mark Twain: Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Ernest Hemingway: Mark Twain knew and loved from his own years on the riverboats. All modern American literature comes from one book by "Huckleberry Finn." Mark Twain was a man of extraordinary contrasts. Although he left school at 12, when his father died, he was eventually awarded honorary degrees from Yale University, the University of Missouri, and Oxford University. His career cncompassed such varied occupations as printer, Mississippi riverboad pilot, journalist, travel writer, and publisher. He made fortunes from his writing, but toward the end of his life he had to resort to lecture tours to pay his debts. He was hot-tempered, profane, and sentimental and also cynical and tortured by self-doubt. My comment: I admire Mark Twain but I am more optimistic with faith and cheerful with self-confidence. Xie Shihao a.k.a. Francis Shieh. July 13, 2007 at 7 p.m.

Mark Twain is my inspiration with humor i.e. Huixie for XIE

Mark Twain was born Samuel Langhorne Clemens in Florida, Missouri in 1835, and left this mundane world at Redding, Connecticut in 1910. He lived for 75 years but left a good impression to the world. Xie Shihao with Moxie(in English) at the age of 81+ learning to be humongously humorous i.e. huixie as my way of life to be cheerful and striving to be a centenarian with longevity with my Chinese nickname as Changsheng in Pin Yin system of romanization . Money unlimited via Credit, a game with multiple effect

Unwittingly we are engaged in activities that power our imagination. Money comes by so easily via the credit cards. Our mind goes on a brainstorming rampage to buy material goods and services. We seem to have an exuberant idea with action. We feel lucky because we can get what we like to have from credit cards. Such work is an art when it is done. It is always work in progress with insatiable desires. We are guru and own our things. We are promoting our happy-go-lucky cause and be cheerful for such course of action. We appear to have increasing optimism, security and emotional freedom. However, facts, projected figures with calculations will need our careful scrutiny. We may be invisible supporter of "enjoying now and pay later" generation in USA and in China as well. Xie Shihao a.k.a. Francis Shieh.July 12, 2007

Washington Post, July 11, 2007 page A15 The Bliss

The Bliss We Can't Buy: Economist Richard Easterlin pointed out that beyond a certain point - presumably when people's basic needs for food,shelter...are met - greater wealth does not generate more national happiness. Cornell University economist Robert Frank's book, "Falling Behind." HE ARGUES THAT RISING AFFLUENCE CONDEMNS US TO SELF-DEFEATING CONSUMPTION CONTESTS. Greater individual wealth does not bring greater collective welfare. Frank mentions about behavior. I would stress lifestyle of the folks in USA. In Robert Samuelson's conclusion: It is philosophers, not social scientists who provide a deeper understanding of happiness. I have sent my blogs in the past at www.baidu.com and my equation for happiness in a fraction is not material consumption as the numerator over desire only but I would add Intellectual Pursuits,Spiritual Satisfaction and Good Health in the numerator over the denominator of Desire. I lectured about such equation in Shanghai in 1981 and in my classes during the past decades. Food for thought for all readers. Xie Shihao a.k.a. Francis Shieh, an octogenarian economist and philosopher. July 11, 2007 at 3.40 p.m.

Teaching and learning give me immense utility(satisfaction)

It is more fun to teach when I include and depend on my team i.e. fellow learners. Such realization would turn my mood from mediocre to fantastic. When I feel sensational, I look sensational. A few chosen compliments to the one in the mirror will help me relax and enjoy my current work which is getting more interesting than ever. My friendly gesture would be well-received. The essence of true happiness is to render my effort that I would like to do. My utility-oriented and optimum-wise operations and options(re ideolect and nuance) could make me an asset to Dictyon.net for global languages. Articulate thinking and fluent speaking help learners to be worthy of our pursuit. Xie Shihao a.k.a. Francis Shieh on Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at 5.14 a.m.

Work and Study would be desiderata to enhance productivity

"Work and Study Cycle Theory" www.ask.com is dedicated to all with eagerness to be effective. Teaching at random may seem to be casual but it is infinitely more enjoyable and conducive to learning. It may be evolution of humankind. Such is gloriously relaxing and the atmosphere is gleeful and creative dither. Whether it is in a classroom or in a pithy e-mail,I may be able to offer a dynamic and high energy performance under academic freedom. Xie Shihao a.k.a. Francis Shieh. July 10, 2007 at 5.50 a.m.

Love and travel open up globalization

Affection gravitates with open minds and optimistic hearts. To enhance love life, be receptive to new experiences with happy scenarios. If folks make a fuss over me, I do not allow it but enjoy it with proper attitude. When I desire wisdom, I am able to find it by reading or watching inspiring individuals for free education. Explore to my heart's desire and I shall find groove by sending blogs online. Xie Shihao a.k.a. Francis Shieh, the octogenarian moxie with thought as "xiaohuozi" and a lifelong student who is ready, able and willing to learn from all friends. Confucius said so long time ago and Xiefucius do concur with this blog. July 9, 2007 at 4.30 p.m.

Food for thought for readres to savvy: Human behavior and Decision making

A bond maestro looks ahead to China and inflation: Washington Post, July 8, 2007 page F1 , F4. One of the reasons inflation has been so low in the past few years is because of Chinese labor. It is obvious that the Chinese currency is appreciating. China, Japan and Saudi Arabia and Norway...own 60% of every Treasury that is outstaanding. They control, for the most part, the market. My comment: I have sent my past blogs to the same effect in www.baidu.com Xie Shihao a.k.a. Francis Shieh. July 8, 2007
Morris Goldstein and Nicholas Lardy are senior fellows at the Paterson Institute for International Economics. Washington Post,July 8, 2007 page A13: Fixing the US trade deficit is not an either or choice between changing the exchange rate in China and reducing the deficit in the US budget. Both are needed. My comments: When ae are involved in Iraq, our federal deficits are increasing. When China's products are being bought by American consumers, our trade deficits are increasing as well. Such fiscal realities can never be solved due to circumstances beyond our control at the present time and in the days to come. Let us wait and see the happenings in 2007 and beyond. The wisdom of the universe to appreciate kind attributes

Quest for truth as my reflection to my trip to New York City, July 7, 2007: I am a fan of learning which is more like re-learning. I am reminded of many words in Shanghai expressions that I have known. Education and tolerance go hand in hand. When I learn the lives of others,I respect their options. By exploring others, I gain sophistication of thought. To hunger is human and to be satisfied is divine. Embrace my spiritual guidance, I have joy as the end result. Today is a good day to ruminate, process and mature. Time is my ally, my mentor and my adviser. Go on with marvel. Xie Shihao a.k.a. Francis Shieh. July 8, 2007 at 6.38 a.m.

Workout that works to get muscle for hustle: Life is action.

Be active for healthy life: Walking is a good exercise. Such activity is unquestionably good for our heart. You bet! Francis Shieh a.k.a. Xie Shihao, an octogenarian to think as a "xiaohuozi" with moxie. July 7, 2007

Looking for courteous drivers: Where are they?

Road Rage: I have been driving since 1951 and it is definitely gotten worse. I find a great deal of hostility on the road, and just rudeness. Folks are in such a hurry. If you take more than a second to start up at a green light, right away someone honks or they come right up behind you. Xie Shihao, an octogenarian who honors the motto:" Slow but sure." Wu dialect and Mandarin in a nutshell

"What you are speaking so loudly I cannot hear what you say." Ralph Waldo Emerson said long time ago. My comment with "huixie": If Emerson were alive today,he would learn the tone difference between the Shanghai dialect and Mandarin in the light vein. Xie Shihao has discovered such in a Wu class at Dictyon.net July 6, 2007.

What is money? Life philosophy of $ in substance

Money may be a bore to those who have it, and a point of envy to those who don't. There is no money in poetry, or poetry in money. My name is "shihao" i.e. hero of poetry. What is money? Currency and securities in the public and private sectors are papers. Credit cards are plastics. Cashless society is handled by the click of a finger. What magic in the mundane world! Who is calling the shots? One who knows the game of playing real monopoly! Attitude is significant: Instead of saying "Oops" but "Wow!" for the positive attitude. Optimism or delusion? Weaknesses are strengths and strengths are superclouts. Dummies are not unwise but lighter in their approach. Chinese expression: A wiseman acts stupidly. Shiehfucius would add: a wise guy may encounter sluts! July 4th to burn the firecrackers to keep warm at heart with fun.

Chery Auto, made in China and sold in USA

Chery sounds like "Qi Lei" meaning "Ride the Upright" in Chinese characters.(Horse radical with strange for the word Qi ; Lei is the combo of three stones) Savvy? Chery cars will be sold under the Chrysler in a few years. Washington Post published on July 4, 2007 on page D1 and D3 for details.

Lifetime learning and teaching

Bon Voyage in the journey of our brainstorm(brainwaves) pursuit: We are happy because of what we know, and we are happy because of what we don't know. It is like we have struck the perfect balance. Enjoy such state of bliss. Chinese language with dialects are more complicated than we ever thought, indeed! July 4, 2007 Independence Day to be independent from English in classes of Wu,the Shanghai dialect. It is fun and we can reach folks in China with 1.4 billion+- who knows?

Be spunky with moxie as a teacher of the Chinese language

My mind is abuzz with thoughts. Since my expertise is needed, I may rock my students with tutelage. By teaching others,I train myself to be a true student of the Chinese language as well. Attitude is everything with a good adjustment. I try to be productive and resourceful all the time.

Newsweek,July 2-9,2007 issue on China

China's next leader may be an expert in law and economics in 2012.
"Keys for Economic Understanding" may be a useful reference for USA and China apropos of economics. Search such work at Borders.com by clicking Used Book for reference.
"Philosophy of Mencius" may be a timely reading material for the revival of Confucianism in China with establishment of 500 institutes by 2010. www.ask.com for reference.
Economists are unperturbed and unflappable due to the complexity and duplicity of the nature of economics with humor.(huixie in Pin Yin system of romanization) Xie Shihao. July 1, 2007
